Last weekend, we attended Jump for Joy, and it was an incredible experience! Tequila came along just for the exposure—but he was doing so well that I decided to enter a few classes with him. He was so confident and quiet.

Our first class was Follow the Leader, where he teamed up with River. It was a great learning experience, and I couldn’t be prouder of him!

Results:

🥈2nd Follow the Leader (with River and Güero)
🥈2nd Poles Open
🏅4th - 12” Cross Rails

It was also great to see Misty River again. She is a 24 year old Kiger Mustang I worked with nearly 20 years ago. Tequila helped give her confidence during the morning warm up. She is such a fun smart mare.

So proud of Tequila for stepping up and performing so well! He surprised me in the best way, and I’m excited for our next adventure!

Esmeralda enjoys her trips to the barn. Friday she was extra spicy and full of energy. I think her squeals are hilarious. It is very slippery at home currently so she can't get her energy out.

She comes along as Mariquita's trailer buddy and hangs out in the trailer while I help River with Mariquita. She loads easily and helps Mariquita's confidence.

Tequila got a new bridle. River got to be the first one to ride him in it and she had fun jumping him over a tiny cross rail. She hopes to be able to ride him in Pony club once we find a saddle to fit him.

Tequila and I went on our first solo trail ride last night. He was much more cautious riding alone but he was super solid. It was also his first trail ride in a bit. I normally ride him in a halter but have been working on transitioning him because wearing a bit is a skill I feel they all need. I love how soft he is when I ask him to slow down even heading back to the trailer.

When we ride with others we are always left behind and needing to trot/lope to catch up. I love how polite he always is about waiting until I ask him to trot or lope to catch up.

He is turning into such an awesome horse.

This was Tequila's last event with me. This was his only event on lane 2 so his first time seeing this side of the arena. Also his first time seeing the chalk key hole which some horses find difficult.

He improved so much on Sunday he was much more comfortable and we trotted both our events. He got so much experience riding to and from the trailer, passing horses, horses passing him in tight quarters, standing in the trailer saddled alone or with Güero, and standing just watching others run.

Saturday night I rode him back to the trailer carrying my coffee in one hand in the dark and rain. He lead the way like a pro. He was a bit nervous leaving the lighted arena into the dark wet weather but he did it.

He also rode in a snaffle all weekend. I have been slowly introducing the bit because he hates it and alternating between bit and halter and often both. He still can't figure out how to lead in a bit but I haven't worked to much on it so I left the halter on.

Tequila went to his first indoor game show this weekend. My daughter rode him in the first event barrels pretty much right off the trailer. She took it slow to stay safe.

We have been practicing at home so he knows the patterns and that he is supposed to lope home. Since he is sticky at home I am trying to just free him up. He really wants to do what is being asked.

These videos of Tequila from August show how sensitive these horses are. Tequila would only cross one way into this paddock on his own and would not exit once he got in.

After investigating I found that tha piece of hotwires on chain link goat/chicken pen to the left had popped out of its insulator, probably with the help of Esmeralda. It must have caused the panels or the ground to become hot.

We have had the issue in the past in another area where our dog would yip anytime she crossed the area but the horses, goats, and I could not feel it or didn't show any distress. It was really hard to know if it was fixed because obviously we didn't want to test it out in case it wasn't. It took me about a week to fully get it fixed so he would go through on his own again. There ended up being several insulators needing adjustments.

There is no hotwire on the 6 ft panels but because the chain link touches the panels and the chain link has hotwire around it to keep the mares from pushing it if the chain link gets hot it spreads to the panels. Usually when there is a short I know because I get shocked feeding the chickens currently using it. I wasn't getting shocked during this time though.

I know he is eventually going to be an amazing riding horse because of his sensitivity.

Tequila and I had a great time at the R&R Haunted Trail Course. I pulled something from him for the first time. It was heavy so I had to stop a lot to try to straighten my saddle. He is starting to respond well to my seat and legs at all gaits instead of just whoa. He is turning into an amazing horse.
