Duncan 🍩 has been here 3 weeks! His progress has been in fits & starts but given his age and level of neglect...we think he's doing AMAZING!

His coat is smoother and shinier. His cough is down to 1x a day. His nose isn't as runny. He's starting to fill out through his ribcage and has ALSO started to develop a little 'tude! 😳

While his quarantine is still in effect, Duncan has made it clear that he's over his ring turnout. He also broke out of the back field. Stubborn old man. 😂

As a compromise, he's now a bit of a free-range chicken.... he stays in his little area beside the ring while I do barn chores and gets to enjoy grass without being close to any other horses.

A win-win. 🍩

If you're looking for a quiet, calming, enjoyable hobby over the winter...consider a care lease! No riding experience necessary; must be able to safely handle a horse on the ground (get from the field, walk in hand, put in x-ties, etc). Our seniors are sweet, gentle, and LOVE attention.

Our Queen 🐝 is all tucked in for the rain! We often get asked why some of our horses live out 24/7 with a run-in shed for shelter instead of a stall. There's a few reasons....

1) All of the horses who live outside (Star, Teddy, Sully, Ghost, and Duchess) were rescues that arrived already accustomed to living outside. It's what they're used to and they enjoy the freedom of coming and going as they please. Duchess in particular is always anxious in a stall.

2) It does help cut down on cost and time (sometimes). Horses that live out don't have to be brought in & out everyday. But they still require clean water, hay, paddock picked, run-in cleaned, blankets, fly spray, etc.

3) Movement is good for senior horses! When they live outside 24/7, they're constantly moving those creaky old joints.

So there you have it! Chances are if I woke up and looked outside at 1AM during the heaviest part of the rain, every outdoor horse would be just that...standing happily outside. Except for Duchess! She doesn't like to get wet.

Dr. Sexton just left! 🍩 She was impressed by Duncan's tenacity and strength. A couple notes.....

* at least mid-30s, not 26 as was said at auction -- might give Duchess a run for her money!

* pneumonia is always a worry, but lungs sounded better than Vet expected

* no temp but heart rate was slightly elevated, indicating discomfort

* old untreated fracture in jaw

* mild uveitis in both eyes

* definitely neurological behind...at this time, we're not going to pursue a cause given his age and limited treatment options. It could be anything from untreated EPM to arthritis in his neck. We agreed that as long as he can get up/down and isn't a danger to himself or others, we'll just monitor

* gave a shot of banamine (for pain) and exceed (antibiotic)

* took bloodwork to test for Cushings

Overall, Dr. Sexton said he was a tough old man and we're doing everything we can. His appetite may come and go as he continues to (hopefully) improve. He will need to remain on quarantine for at least 2 more weeks. We're holding off on vaccines to give his immune system time to strengthen. So long as he seems bright, comfortable, and continues to slowly gain weight, our plan is to keep him happy and get him as healthy as we can for however much time he has left. ❤️❤️❤️

Duncan went off his feed yesterday and is continuing to ignore his grain today, which is unlike (the new & improved) him...

Duncan went off his feed yesterday and is continuing to ignore his grain today, which is unlike (the new & improved) him. Vet is coming this morning to give him his full workup, hopefully she'll have some ideas to get his appetite back!

While Duncan's progress has been so encouraging, he is still a very old and thin gentleman that likely suffered years of slow starvation.

Keep going, Duncan! 💪

New Pop-Up Lessons just posted... plus a reminder that our regular lesson schedule is stopping for the winter on 11/19 and resuming 4/1/25! The horses will be taking a well deserved break through the end of November, then Pop-Up Lessons will be available depending on the weather.

If you have a current weekly lesson spot, you will need to RESERVE that spot by prepaying for your first 2025 lesson. If you have a package that won't run out of lessons between now and 11/19, just make sure to confirm with Colleen or Jillian that you'd like to continue on the same day/time next year.

The schedule opens up to new students on 12/1. If you haven't reserved your weekly spot by then, we cannot guarantee it won't go to someone else.
