These two 30+ year-old STB mares are an ongoing project for our volunteers. Pickle is very defensive and always protective of Byrd, who is friendlier, so we are slowly trying to make in-roads. 🫶

This bonded pair of 33/31 year-old STB mares lived their entire lives at the same farm until their owner recently passed away.
They are still thin, but have gained weight with us after having much-needed dental care. It costs at least $400 each month to board, feed and care for each HRU horse.

Kyo is still dreaming of a home to call his own.
Nobody has asked about him. No one has offered a home.
He was a long term resident in a Kill shelter since June 13th.
Surviving the streets, severe starvation, hernia, bad teeth.
In December he arrived at HRU and has been great in his foster home ever since with all dogs, kids, visitors.
He mostly sleeps and looks forward to meal times.
