We are so proud of the new American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Diplomates for Fish Practice!

Welcome Dr A. Carla Phillips Savage, a new Fish Practice Diplomate!

Dr. A. Carla Phillips Savage is an Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Population Health Sciences at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM). She joined the Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine (CPCVM) in the VMCVM in August 2022 as part of the veterinary team that focuses on training and preparing veterinary students and graduate veterinarians who wish to pursue career paths outside of private practice. Dr. Savage completed her DVM and master’s degree in Food Animal Medicine at the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago, and she attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, as a Fulbright Scholar, where she earned her PhD in Aquatic Animal Medicine. Upon completion of her PhD, she returned to Trinidad and Tobago, re-joining the UWI School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) where she introduced aquatic animal medicine to the UWI-SVM’s veterinary curriculum. While there she also served in many capacities nationally and regionally including on the country's National Aquaculture Task Force for the Implementation of the Food Production Action Plan; on the Management and Advisory Committee of the Caribbean Fisheries Training and Development Institute as Chair for Curriculum Development and Training; as the Fish and Shellfish Health Consultant for state-owned aquaculture facilities in Trinidad and Tobago; and as the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH, formerly OIE) National Focal Point for Aquatic Animal Diseases for Trinidad and Tobago, before returning to the United States and joining the VMCVM. In 2018, she was awarded as one of 77 women who have made outstanding contributions in their respective disciplines, the community, and the Caribbean region. In 2021, her professional contributions to the field of Aquatic Medicine and Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Conservation in Trinidad and Tobago and the Wider Caribbean were recognized by the Anthony N. Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence, where she was selected and named a 2021 Laureate in the field of Science and Technology. Dr. Savage continues to work on community development, food security, and aquatic ecosystem health-based projects internationally. She is an advocate for the promotion of the One Health principle in addressing threats to the health and conservation of aquatic ecosystems, and the overall improvement of human, animal and environmental health.

Setting up a tank for pet fish requires careful consideration of species-specific needs, including temperature, acidity and light, and it may take two to four weeks for bacteria in tanks to stabilize, says veterinarian Judilee Marrow. New fish should be quarantined in a separate tank before they are introduced to an established tank, tank conditions should be monitored closely, fish must be handled carefully, and they must be fed properly to avoid obesity, Dr. Marrow says. Finally, the internet is awash in misinformation about fish care, so fish owners should consult with an experienced veterinarian.
