I am SO proud of Ferris!
We took a trip to a dog wash today. Not to take a bath, but for simple socialization. He had never been there, so it was a new experience.
It turned into a great training session!
I sped it up 10x, because we were in there for a whopping 15 minutes!
A. His tail was wagging the whole time, which means he’s engaged. If he were to have shut down, I would have stopped and taken a break.
B. In situations like this you have to be positive and a canine cheerleader the whole time! I was smiling and encouraging him at every moment.
C. Operant Conditioning. Once he is doing a behavior 80% of the time, stop doing it. In other words, once I rewarded him for getting to the second step a few times, I stopped rewarding it. Now, if he regressed and THEN got to the second step again, I’d give one reward.
D. I could have easily done this for him. Picked him up and placed him in the tub. Saved myself 15 minutes! But, just like little kids, they need to do things on their own. This was a huge learning experience and confidence builder for Ferris! This is something he will remember and be able to apply to other situations.. “I can do it!”
E. I took his leash off about halfway through. The door was locked, so I knew no one could come in (or that he could get out!). Even though his leash was very loose while it was on, sometimes dogs can still feel that “restraint “, and I wanted him to feel free to come and go. No one was forcing him to go up the steps.
F. At one point I turned my head and ignored him. I could tell he *wanted* my attention, so I thought maybe I I ignore him, he’d try harder to get it.
H. I changed my body position a number of times. Climbing up into the tub myself, and eventually sitting down (so I didn’t have lean towards him). Yep, I ended up with a very wet bottom!
I. Gosh! I hope you can feel the pride when he finally does it! Way to go little buddy!!
