In between the madness…

I published a children’s book!

Story (our resident Ambassador for Firefly Meadow Service Dogs Inc. ) takes you through what it means to be a service dog. She will introduce you to her two friends, Prom and Ritzy while she shows you different tasks and how to react when seeing a working dog in public!

ALL profits made from this book will go directly to the dogs: food, veterinary care, and improvements to our facilities as we grow.

Please consider purchasing the book and writing a review or just sharing this post to reach as many people possible!

Shevreally is really hoping someone will call and ask if she can be a part of their home. ♥️

Ms. Shevreally will be two on October 30th. She is up to date on vaccines, is being spayed this week and an expert cuddler. She loves other dogs and playing outside. She is the perfect hiking companion! Shevreally was supposed to be a part of our breeding program, but unfortunately, she didn’t quite make the cut. And now she wants to have an amazing family to give all her love to.

Heading out on hikes is a favorite activity for all! Running, jumping over logs, smelling all the smells and enjoying nature! 🌳

Story had a great LAST puppy check up! At 16 weeks, she is 32pounds and perfectly healthy!

She had to graduate to the next size vest because her puppy vest was getting too snug!

Here at Firefly Meadow Service Dogs Inc. we are developing a breeding program that not only produces fantastic temperaments for assistance work, but also impeccable genetics 🧬 to help better each specific breed.

We’ve spent hours vetting potential breeding females that could live up to these high standards…but sometimes it just falls short! Each of our potential breeders are extensively tested: hips, elbows, genetic tests, annual eye exams and an advanced echocardiogram to check their heart.

Ms. Shevreally, our import from Serbia, started her preliminary screenings to become a future momma for us. But, unfortunately, she hasn’t quite met our high standards for genetics.

So now Shevreally is looking for her forever home 🏠. Because we imported Shevreally around a year old, her level of socialization wasn’t quite where we would’ve liked it. So being in “public” with loud noises (especially beeping - backing trucks) makes her nervous. BUT she loves to go on hikes, and walks and to be outside! She is the best cuddle-er, is AMAZING with kids, and has always been wonderful with our pack of six dogs. She’s fully potty trained, fully crate trained, well mannered and would love to go to an active home that enjoys the outdoors!

She is scheduled to be spayed on Oct. 19th.
She turns 2 years old on Oct. 30th
Is up to date on all of her vaccines and Flea/tick/heart worm.

Proofing: when your dog is able to complete a series of commands in every environment, at any time with all distractions. It takes hundreds of hours to proof a dog!

Here is one of our favorite places to train - at the mall in front of the pet store. We get to hear other dogs barking, smell other animals, and see other people walking by. There is often all walks of life at the mall, making it a great place for our ADVANCED dogs to practice!

Ritzy - resident warehouse dog!

Chelsea’s husband, Tyler, owns a business that delivers dairy supplies to farmers (paper towels, milking equipment, tools, etc). So Ritz tagged along as we organized a few things as a family. We “practiced” some agility, balance and loud noises…but Ritzy is our star ⭐️ student, and is phased by NOTHING. I love this dog!

Training a dog to be “neutral” to all stimuli is incredibly boring. I think Story agrees 😂

This task takes hours and hours of repetitive outings and simply sitting and watching. We hear all types of noises, smell all types of smells, see all walks of life and come across all different types of dogs. Pair this training with adding a reward when she chooses to engage (make eye contact) with me is the core foundation to service dog work.

This organization (for now) is run completely by two women. We are learning and figuring it out, but we work day and night to bring some light to our small (but growing!) nonprofit. We’ve had to become researchers, grant writers, record keepers, vet techs, social media experts, public relations, and accountants…as well our chosen profession - Dog Trainers!

We are truly THAT passionate about service dogs and what they can do for so many people! Our mission is to hopefully cut down the wait times people are needing to wait while a service dog is being trained (that can take up to TWO years).

We are taking superior genetics and creating a high quality line of service dogs.

Our hearts and our wallets are truly invested in this project.

Some of our recent adventures this week!

Our dogs get out every day. They “go to work” and then have downtime with the rest of the pack and us! This makes for well rounded dogs that won’t burn out too quickly. We want them to enjoy their jobs, but also enjoy playing around like other dogs. It helps alleviate a lot of stress!

Ritzy, Prom, and Story headed to the Schaghticoke Fair! While Ritzy and Prom were working, Story got to enjoy all the hugs and kisses from the safety of her stroller. We have some VERY tired dogs!
