Governor Ron DeSantis has signed SB 942 into law, ending a nearly three-decade-long ban on pittie breeds in Miami-Dade County.

🐾SB 942 was sponsored by Senator Alexis Calatayud.

🐾The Bill was signed into law on June 16, 2023 at 3:35 pm.

🐾The law takes effect at midnight on October 1, 2023.

A bill to end BSL in Florida was passed unanimously by the Senate, and awaits the governor's signature.

Today is a historical day in Florida. Breed specific legislation is no more in Miami-Dade. SB 942 unanimously passed in the Florida Senate with 116 YEAS and 0 NAYS.

This is the bill we posted about on Monday that authorizes public housing authorities to adopt certain policies relating to dogs: they can not discriminate against a dog's breed, size or weight when renting to families with dogs. The bill also removed the exemption for local (Miami-Dade) breed specific ordinances adopted before a specified date. Effective Date: October 1, 2023.

Thank you to everyone who wrote your Representatives on Monday and Tuesday. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard over the years to remove BSL from the Miami-Dade legal system that has banned dogs with certain characteristics for 30 years. Thank you to Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation and their fearless leader Dahlia Canes.

Orlando, Florida. C**t needs a foster ASAP. He was found in the road bleeding profusely from his mouth. Although he's more stable now, he's having trouble eating due to lacerations caused by SHRAPNEL. Who can help this friendly dog?

Meet C**T!

He was found lying on Thorpe road in Orlando 32824 critically injured and having a hard time breathing. He was bleeding profusely from his mouth and brought to the VEC where he spent the night. He is more stable now, but has not been eating, due to lacerations in his mouth/tongue. Shrapnel was found in his mouth, though no evidence of broken bones although there is notable swelling. Dog is friendly and has not given any issues handling. He will need rescue placement for further treatment and care which is beyond of our capabilities at the Shelter. He would still be on a stray hold and we will ask the rescue

ANIMAL CRUELTY AWARENESS MONTH

April is widely recognized as a time to renew awareness of the issue of animal cruelty. Not just this month, but, every single month, Sheriff Carmine Marceno and the entire Lee County Sheriff's Office recognizes the necessity to protect animals.

In April 2020, Sheriff Carmine Marceno announced an initiative to combat Animal Abuse within Lee County by establishing the Lee County Sheriff's Office Animal Cruelty Task Force, which will continue focusing on educating residents on animal abuse and neglect. Sheriff Marceno has selected experienced detectives to investigate all misdemeanor and felony animal abuse cases within the county. Sheriff Marceno has zero tolerance for animal abuse and will seek justice for those that cannot speak up for themselves.

FACT....Media coverage, myths and pop culture — whatever the reason, shelters say pit bulls and Chihuahuas continue to dominate as the pets most commonly abandoned.

Because of prejudice against pit bulls and chihuahuas , they are frequently unwanted, euthanized and denied by shelters.

BSL is everywhere.
And if you think its only Pitbulls, its not.
All dogs need responsible owners who understand that keeping their dog safe and controlled is their job as a caregiver. If individuals are failing to do this, let them face the consequences. Don’t blame all the other dog owners who are stepping up to their role and keeping their dogs in check.

Floyd County, Georgia. This is the face of a coward. He was arrested in late February for operating a training facility for fighting dogs. Police removed 17 heavily chained dogs from the property. Evidence of sport fighting equipment included industrial chains, thick collars and weighted vests. Pennsylvania. A dog named Pursuit makes his getaway. Pursuit, a 4 year old American Bulldog mix, was found abandoned in October 2021, and got his name when police had to chase him down to catch him. He was brought to the Humane Society of Harrisburg, where he became a staff and volunteer favorite. When the shelter announced a euthanasia date for him of Monday, February 13, dozens of people came out to protest. A volunteer took Pursuit out of the shelter and drove away with him. The shelter filed theft charges against the volunteer. On Wednesday, the local District Attorney refused to charge the volunteer, stating it would not be in the public interest. Pursuit is safe in an undisclosed location. Go, Pursuit, go!

Pursuit the dog was supposed to be euthanized Monday when a volunteer took him away from the Humane Society.

Miami-Dade, Florida. Raul Perez, a vet-tech at Miami-Dade Animal Services for 10 years, was arrested Tuesday on one count of animal cruelty with intent to injure. The 3 month old Great Dane mix suffered blunt force trauma, fractured teeth and bruised eyes. The puppy is under the care of a rescue.

A longtime Miami-Dade Animal Services employee was arrested on an animal cruelty charge after a co-worker allegedly witnessed him brutally beat a puppy, authorities said.
