Update: Hewey’s Mass is benign!!! He is doing great in his foster home and he will go back to the vet next Thursday for follow up chest x rays.
Hewey left the hospital last night and made it to his foster home. This guy is so sweet and has clearly suffered long-term neglect. You can see every bone in his body and his head has that sunken look. His coat is dry and patchy. He also seems to be housebroken and he arrived at the shelter neutered, so somebody maybe cared about him at some point. He is on numerous antibiotics, an antiemetic, and an antacid to try to get everything back to normal. We will have to repeat his x rays soon and we are waiting on results from an FNA on a fairly large mass on his chest. Hewey is an older guy (we think at least 12) and once he heals up he needs a soft place to land with a kind-hearted person who can give him a great last chapter. Can anyone be his hero? He’s in South Florida now but transport is available up the east coast.
Salt and Pepper are enjoying an early spring day in New England. They have been searching for their perfect home together for far too long - they’ve already experienced three seasons there. These brothers are around 3, under 10 lbs, very sweet, and they must stay together. There must be someone in New England willing to adopt two dogs that love each other as much as these guys do. Please, please share them around. They deserve their happy ending too. They are kid friendly, dog friendly (but may bark initially), pee pad trained, super sweet and snuggly but will take a bit to warm up in a new environment. These boys are so cute!! How has nobody snapped them up?
Today we took in a 16+ year old dog named Bree from the shelter 💔. She’s the oldest dog we’ve rescued. She is still on stray hold for a few more days. Her owner was hospitalized and was having a hard time caring for her and agreed that a rescue taking her was the best option. All of these shelter dogs have some sort of sad story but our hearts break into a million pieces for these seniors. She was adopted from the same shelter fifteen years ago as an adult dog and then found herself back there again. She is in rough shape and has a hard time walking and is deaf. She’s sweet and somebody clearly loved her. She’s confused, which is to be expected when your entire world gets upended. She will see our vet on Tuesday and we will see what we can do to keep her comfortable. #seniordogs #rescuedogs
Gentle giant Diego has left the building 🎉. He was adopted and then returned for being too big (he certainly didn’t change size in that short time period 🤔). Then he found himself with a euthanasia deadline for tomorrow. Thanks to @theconfidentcaninewpb for saving this guy’s life. He will get trained up and will be looking for a home soon. And thanks to Jonathan Colon Garcia for helping getting him to WPB today. #greatdane #rescuedog
River has something to celebrate this morning! We heard last night that his mass is not cancer! It is a large lipoma. We are still likely to try to surgically remove it out of concern for its size and location and the vets seem confident that they can do so without compromising leg function, which is amazing. This middle-aged guy should have a lot more years left in him.
Al update: For those who missed it, Al finally got his cataract surgery late last week. He was fully blind but he first had to get through a month-long pneumonia battle and an echo to make sure his heart could handle surgery (due to his heart murmur). We were so excited that he could finally get the surgery but it was immediately apparent that something was wrong as he woke up. He’s been since diagnosed with Vestibular Disease (a balance issue) which was a result of the anesthesia. It’s an uncommon but possible side effect. He is very disoriented and can only walk in circles. We are very hopeful that he will return to normal and be able to enjoy his newfound eyesight, but right now we are just devastated for this poor guy because we know he’s suffering and it breaks our hearts. We hope to see some improvement soon 💔. We are so grateful to everyone who donated towards Al’s care and has been rooting for him.
Zach would love a dog friend in his new home! He’s the best foster brother and an all around great dog. He is in Atlanta but available for adoption up the east coast.
Big day for Al! He gets his cataract surgery today (as well as neuter). We can’t wait for him to be able to see again. He has so much of his life ahead of him ❤️.
Zach is the happiest boy but the start of his story is a tragic one - living his life chained to a tree, starving, emaciated, watching his friend die beside him. Then @lifelineanimal rescued him off that chain, and he landed in a warm foster home with a kind family, and he got fed every day. The thing is, Zach didn’t have much of an adjustment period. Sure, he had to gain over 20 lbs because he was severely emaciated. But it was clear that Zach also knew from the start that he belonged in a home. He is gentle, he is kind, he is a good foster brother to a tiny puppy. Dogs always amaze us with their resiliency and their ability to live in the moment but he is truly exceptional in that regard. And this healthy boy is ready to find a family that will show him that he’s treasured every day. Zach is currently in the Atlanta area but transport is available up the east coast. He’s two years old and about 65 lbs and would fit in great for a lot of families. Please message us for more info on this guy. #rescuedog #bullies #shelterdog
River (fka Rover) from MDAS is safe! He is hoarding all the toys and enjoying long walks and naps in his giant bed. Tomorrow he will see our vet to address the large mass on his leg. Today he will enjoy peace and quiet for the first time in seven months. Thank you to all the wonderful humans who advocated for this sweet senior boy ❤️❤️. #seniordog #rescuedog
There’s just so much we can learn from dogs. Ace has been through hell in the past two weeks - from being hit by a car and devastatingly injured, ending up at the shelter, and then spending ten days being poked and prodded and put back together with screws and wires. He still has a broken hip (he needs some time to recover and gain strength before a third surgery). Who knows what hell his life was before all of this. He hasn’t been outside in almost two weeks and he is nothing but smiles being able to just sit basking in the sunshine. It just gives us an overwhelming joy and appreciation for dogs ❤️❤️. #rescuedog
As of 8 am this morning, Ace is officially ours. We’ve been holding off on sharing him. He was hit by a car and ended up at the shelter a few days ago, unable to walk. Due to the severity of his injuries, he had a euthanasia deadline before his stray hold was up, so taking him meant that an owner could come forward and we would be forced to return him. We heard rumors of an owner who let him wander the neighborhood daily which led to him being almost killed by a car. He has been quietly hospitalized since Wednesday and tomorrow he will hopefully get surgeries to fix a badly broken femur on one side, a broken hip on the other, and a broken front ulna. He has a long road to recovery but he is the sweetest dog and his wonderful foster made this all possible. His care will be extremely expensive, but we couldn’t let him die at the shelter. If you’re in a position to give towards Ace’s care, we would greatly appreciate it. Ace, we love you and we are so glad you’re on to the next chapter. #rescuedog #rescuedogsofinstagram
Benny from MDAS almost died two weeks ago from pneumonia. He had had a bumpy road to recovery but he’s feeling so much better now! He is a perfect dog and we can’t understand how anyone gave him up, but he’s headed to his hopeful foster to adopt home in two days. It’s only up from here for this scruffy little dream dog 🥰. #scruffydog #rescuedogs
The hits just keep coming for us. Little Pepper’s mass came back as malignant melanoma and it has likely already metastasized. We will explore our options this week but what she has is typically very aggressive. We know we are always taking chances when we rescue these old dogs in bad shape but it’s been a pretty devastating week with two being diagnosed with terminal cancer a few days apart 💔.
This may just look like a boring video of a dog eating, but when that dog has been very sick and barely ate at the hospital or shelter, this video brings rescuers like us tremendous joy and hope. Benny came home to his medical foster late last night. The ER didn’t have a good reason to keep him as he is oxygenating well and didn’t need any sort of IV and we felt that a home environment might be better for his recovery. He quickly ate a good meal, went for a very short walk, got a medicated nebulizer treatment, and settled in for the night. Benny is still quite sick with pneumonia and feels crummy but he wags his tail and looks for affection despite all of that. He and Al are both battling pneumonia but we are very hopeful they will both recover well. Both are under the supervision of our great vet here. Thanks everyone for your prayers and well wishes for these sweet boys. Keep em coming.
Al had a deadline at 3:30 today. That’s what happens when you’re a blind dog with medical issues in an overcrowded shelter. He is the sweetest and most grateful dog ever. Even though he can’t see, he absolutely knew he had just been rescued as soon as we got in the car. Our hope is that we can give Al his sight back (although he gets around very well without it). Stay tuned. #blinddog #miniatureschnauzer #rescuedog
We constantly get asked about dogs that are good with little kids and it’s tricky because our policy is to only adopt to families with small kids if the dog has proven child history. Well Lara is not only tolerant of kids…she absolutely loves them! She follows her foster sibling around and is so gentle and sweet. She is also perfect around the house, a petite 35 lbs, and wonderful with other dogs. What more could you ask for?
Senior rescue Pepper was so miserable - totally matted and covered in tangled sticks, feces, and urine. As soon as the hair came off, she turned into a total puppy! Thank you to Keila for staying late to groom her.
