Shortly after our Freedom Flight on Dec. 12th, our small but mighty team went into one of the worst hoarding situations we have ever seen.
We understand that these images are difficult to look at and even harder to process but tragically this was the reality for 100 chihuahuas. They were in a space not bigger than 400 square feet and they were everywhere. Each room we opened revealed more; they were in closets, behind closets, in the bathroom, behind the refrigerator. As we arrived one poor dog had literally just given birth in the shower.
It was unbelievably overwhelming; the smell, the sound and the sheer number of dogs. We asked our friends from to help with the case and they were on site with us as we removed the dogs. It took four hours to rescue them all. Tragically, we did discover a deceased dog under a shelving unit. This poor animal had been there for quite a while and it just imprinted on all of us the absolute horror of what we were witnessing.
The fact that someone was actually living in these conditions with these dogs was beyond belief. The floors were thick with urine and f***s which made them slick and dangerous. The dogs and the person responsible for them were all living in their own filth.
El Faro took 51 dogs and we have 48. All have extensive medical conditions: TVT’s (transmissible venereal tumors), severe skin problems and hair loss, males with retained testicles (cryptorchidism) and shocking dental complications. Many are also exhibiting behavioral issues.
We believe this situation began with a person who was illegally breeding these dogs for profit and things got out of control. Her family finally intervened and removed her from the home. We also had them sign legally binding paperwork preventing them all from owning dogs going forward. Law enforcement have been notified and will be monitoring the premises and the family.
Please note that because of everything we have described above WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING ANY ADOPTION APPLICATIONS FOR ANY OF THESE RESCUES AT THIS TIME. We will announce as they become available for adoption.
