No, they really don’t need blankets…..(Of course special needs exist when a few might need blankets) Evolution has adapted horses to survive without human intervention as long as they have access to 24/7 forage.

UPDATE: Upon further research, I found that dragonflies can also carry the bacteria that causes Potomac!!

I want to put out a PSA about Potomac Horse Fever. It’s caused by the Mayfly and it’s in our area. The flies hatch later summer early fall and pick up the bacteria from aquatic snails. I don’t have a pond or creek on my property but my mini mare ended up contracting it. She must have ingested the fly. The mayfly can travel up to 10 miles according to the vet at UW that treated my little one. 2 days after she came home, I scooped a mayfly out of the water trough!! I never knew that it was a concern in Illinois. UW informed me that they are seeing a lot of cases. Watch for lethargy, no appetite, diarrhea & temperature as high as 107. Talk to your vet about vaccinations, much less expensive than Equine hospital… 4 days in ICU and $4,000 later.
