How one change drastically improved my dog's pesky behaviors immediately!
Negative Punishment is the name of the game in today's post.
This technique involves removing something that your dog considers desirable, such as a treat, attention, or toy.
For example, if your dog jumps on you when entering a space they are at, you turn your back and ignore them until they sit calmly. This communicates to your dog that jumping equals no attention from you. Repeat this process each time you enter an area where your dog is likely to jump on you, and once they understand that reinforcement is removed (by turning your back to them) every time they jump, you may reward the behavior of sitting with either a treat, attention, or their toy.
By implementing this type of Negative Punishment, you immediately demonstrate to your dog that jumping will not unlock what they desire.
Facts:
1. Negative punishment is a scientifically proven method for decreasing unwanted behavior in dogs.
2. It's a humane way of communicating what is not acceptable behavior.
3. It's a powerful tool when combined with positive reinforcement to teach the desired behavior.
It requires consistency and patience, but it will pay off in the long run when you know your dog is peacefully sitting, awaiting your attention in a positive manner.
Remember to be consistent, patient and use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior. Give it a try and watch your dog's behavior improve!
