***VARMINT THRASHER IN THE MAKING***

Lil’Frankie Mon is really starting to show me some good drive during tug training!!

Although a pups drive doesnt guarantee how good of hunting or varmint thrashing dog one will become..... it really helps me with my selections.
Simply put... dogs with drive are much easier to train for nearly everything.
Much more to the equation here obviously.
Tug drive doesnt always equate to the best hunting dogs but it can be a tool to help pull out what might be there.

***DECKERS IN CANADA***

Freddy left us last week for British Columbia.

He is very happy in his new home on a farm with lots of horses and a new doggie friend named Archie.
They are going to be a nice rat thrashing team!!

Freddy might also become a bird flusher!!!
Many dont know the Decker family and others have used them for flushing different types of birds.

Took this shot the day he left for his new home.

What a handsome little man!!!!

***FUNCTION VS FORM!!!***

SHOULD THE DEW CLAWS BE REMOVED??

Don’t shoot the conveyer of this information. Just sharing what I found.

This may or may not apply to you and your breed.

Some good information in this research paper. Worth a read.

POLYGENIC vs MONOGENIC TRAIT SELECTION

This book is basically the main book on canine genetics. It’s a text book for school so it’s real heady. More like an encyclopedia than a book on breeding. I for sure don’t understand a lot of this book. Great resource to cross reference with.

Hunting, behaviour and temperament are traits that require a lot of genes that interact to occur.

Understanding how to breed for polygenic traits is not the same as traits that require a few or even a single gene to occur.

Put simply... breeding for the physical traits is much easier than breeding for temperament and working behaviours.

Excellent primer that covers advanced topics in a relatively easy manner if one already has a steady grasp on the basics. Otherwise it might be too heady for them
I highly recommend this to breeders that are even remotely serious about understanding what they are doing past the simple basics.

Ohhh you understand genetics..... which part?

Pups were well behaved on Saturday at the senior’s home.
One if my favourite places to socialize the pups.
We even somehow had Miss Sassy Pants fall asleep in one of the women’s arms. 😂

Morticia aka Momma Junior is really getting that thrash going!!!

I get to see what level of drive the pups have and develop with the good ol tug type games. Invaluable tool!!
There is an art and a science to the tug game. Especially when using it for drive engagement.
Plus the pups love it!!!

Anyone else run their dogs on the regular?
In this vid you can see Lil G (piebald) and his daughter Doku (tuxedo) at their normal pace of 20mph. They can do this for miles and miles.
Here you can see Doku’s gait with longer leg to body ratio compared to Lil G and how she can accelerate faster than him.

But Lil G can run twice as long with no slowing down and can run at a higher top speed for longer.
He seems to have more going on with his body shape, muscles and gait than I currently understand.
Lil G is a 50/50 Decker/Woods and Doku is 75/25 Decker/Woods. Woods line are large hunting rat terriers from days long past.

22/11/2022

We are on week 4 of the early socialization program.
This week:
Rapid physical and behavioral development occurs this week. As pups become more mobile and extend their exploration of their den, we utilize this time to offer more variety and challenges for the pups.
Body handling will offer more variety in items used.
Massage continues to build up a positive human relationship as well as pups learning to cooperate with humans and not wiggle when being held or handled.
Their sense of hearing is improving so this week gently build skills around hearing.
Promote confidence and calm acceptance of unfamiliar environments.

Why do Early Neurological Stimulation?

Adaptability is an important skill in working dogs. Teaching pups to accept daily changes in environment, handling and routine during this age group will help them generalize to any environment in their working life.
Teaching pups to interact with their environment without overreacting is an important skill in producing sound working dogs.
Teaching these skills during the early critical learning period will produce better results than introducing it after 12 weeks of age when pup is not as adaptable to changes.
Increasing the pup’s repertoire of positive associations around new and novel objects and environments will result in resilient dogs.
