Nicholas went with me to the doctors office today and he was perfect! Waited patiently in the waiting area, under the table and out of the way. Settled nicely in the exam room, and even fell asleep while waiting. Nice and relaxed, it was a great outing! Thanks to the wonderful staff at UVA Orthopedics and Dr. Cooper’s office for being so wonderful with him visiting today!

Our time together comes to an end! The is separating out and preparing to move on to their puppy raisers. Today I said goodbye to Ted Lasso and Jamie Tart. It is always hard to see them move on to the next stage, but I also feel like a proud mama!

Happy Birthday Fran! This has been a wonderful year because I had you with me. I learned so much from you and my heart breaks to let you go. You are going to be one amazing service dog, and I know someone out there needs you. You will change their life like you changed mine. Keep chasing frisbees, but please give the cats a break. Meet Maya! She is a 7.5mo AussieDoodle who is as soft as she looks! She is very intelligent, and learns behaviors very quickly. If she is not entertained, she knows trouble will get my attention. She is keeping me on my toes!

Targets are a great way to teach a dog to do many tasks. The ability to direct the dog where to touch or push is easily transferred by use of a target.

Here Fran is learning to close a drawer by increasing the duration and pressure of her target. A few more repetitions and I will start to fade the target.

Teaching Fran a controlled retrieve. I planned to use the dumbbell to train with, but as you can see she liked the wooden spoon better. Above all, she loves the bite stick. Notice how her body language changed when we switched to the bite stick!
