Avocados and chocolate are great for humans but Toxic for dogs.

Just because it’s healthy for humans doesn’t mean it’s healthy for dogs.

Keep things like avocados, chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol away from your dogs.

The great thing is that most animal products such as grass fed liver, organs and meats are healthy and safe for both you and your dogs.

Should you give your dog yogurt as a snack?

The short answer is yes but look for easily digestible high quality sources like yogurts made of sheep or goats milk.

And if you have to go cow make sure it’s Grassfed pasture raised, the same goes for sheep or goats milk.

Yogurt is a great source of calcium, protein, healthy fats and gut happy probiotics.

Besides yogurt beards on dogs are way cute. ❤️

What’s a Wolf Child anyway?

A long time ago wolves started to bond with humans. Even though dogs share more than 99% of their DNA with wolves they are clearly far from wolves.

Dogs exist are the product of Wolf DNA growing, and adapting to our human environment. This happened when humans were still hunter gatherers, way before we were doing this whole civilization thing.

So you can say dogs are Wolf children but so are we. Who raised who?

But just as humans have developed the diseases of civilization so have dogs. Did you know that 1 out of every 2 dogs will die of cancer? And that diabetes is becoming an epidemic among dogs?

The good thing is that the prevalence of these diseases are preventable when proper nutrition and life style changes are made.

Dogs and humans came up together in the world so we might as well get healthy together too.

Let's talk about Biologically Appropriate Food for our Fur Children:

Although dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, their genotype (internal digestive system and physiology) has remained unchanged. A biologically appropriate diet mimics the diet of the wild ancestors of dogs. This back to basics (Ancestral) diet consists of a variety of raw, fresh prey foods.

You may heard of some popular primal or caveman diets for humans, the theory being that unprocessed fresh foods high in protein and low in carbohydrates are best for people who evolved successfully over thousands and thousands of years consuming such diets.

The concept of the "Ancestral Diet" for dogs is that even though they have evolved from their ancestors, their basic nutritional needs have not changed, and just like their ancestors, they thrive in high protein, balanced fats, and at least some fresh foods.

How can you incorporate more Ancestral Diet into your dog's food? You can use a simple ratio to make sure your dog is consuming a balanced diet - this usually looks like; about 40% water, 35% protein, 22% fat, and 3% carbs.

Timing is everything.

How often should you feed your dog?

Research is showing us that intermittent fasting can extend lifespan by 20-30%z

This means that if you want your pup to access these life giving benefits, feeding times should only happen 1-2 times per day with a nice window of no food.

As soon as a molecule of goodness touches their tongue dogs know what’s good for them and what not.

If you have a picky dog who who spits out most of the chews trying to pass them selves off as health food it’s because your dogs DNA knows there’s stuff in there it doesn’t like.

Fillers and junk with some synthetics or maybe some herbs that have no research in dogs to back up their safety or efficacy.

Stuff, that if you knew how bad it was you’d never find it on your own dinner plate.

In 1777 during a surprise attack on the British, British General Sir William Howe’s fox terrier, Lila, was lost in the commotion and ended up joining the American Army as it withdrew back to its encampment and found her way to George Washington’s headquarters.

As a dog lover himself, upon learning that the dog’s collar had Howes name engraved he ordered that she be returned to Howe with a polite note.

Our dogs are our mirrors. So much of who and what we are is reflected back at us in their personalities.

So when our dogs have health problems it’s telling us something about ourselves.

The dog owner who cares about their own health should indeed invest the same attention towards their dog.

This means:

Learning how to read labels (there’s a LOT of nasty stuff out there in the dog world that passes as ‘healthy’)

Learning a little bit about what your dog actually needs nutrition wise based on their ancestry, not just what the food companies tell you. (Look into who owns most of them it’ll blow your mind)

Make sure your dog gets enough activity to stay healthy. If movement is good for you then it’s good for your dog. Our bodies would love to sit around on the couch all day like a sack of potatoes but we all know what happens next.

What would you do with a few more years with your dog?

Losing your dog is the most painful thing in the universe, so why wouldn’t we do everything we can to add life to their years and years to their life?

There’s a few things we can do to gain more time:
