"All for 1, One Health for All" is the theme of World Rabies Day 2023. The control and elimination of this terrible disease requires collaboration between everyone working in the health care of humans, animals and the environment.

The theme of the 17th annual World Rabies Day, “All for 1, One Health for All,” highlights the need for collaboration and strengthening health systems to eliminate human deaths from dog-mediated rabies. Unvaccinated dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99% of all r...

We are continuing to partner with the Department of Planning and Environment and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to produce video resources for the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation sector.

In this latest series, we travelled to Ballina NSW to film with NPWS’ marine wildlife expert and veterinarian Dr Duane March at the Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue centre. There are now 13 new videos in the library, featuring a range of essential skills and techniques – from handling and restraint and flipper tagging, through to assessing float syndrome and venipuncture in sea turtles. We were even lucky enough to be able to film a hospitalised sea snake!

I am immensely proud of these videos because they will form a critical visual reference guide to support the initial treatment and care of these beautiful sea creatures. A big thank you to NPWS’ Shona Lorigan who was instrumental in helping produce these videos, and to Duane March who is so knowledgeable in his field of expertise and so accommodating of the filming process that we really were able to capture some really wonderful content.

Videos can be accessed FREE in the Versatile Vet video library now or via the DPE Standards of Care page and are designed to support the Code of Practice for Injured and Sick Sea Turtles and Sea Snakes. All links in comments. Please note the regulation and legislation around interaction with wildlife can vary across jurisdictions.

We are delighted to have collaborated with the Department of Planning and Environment, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Associate Professor Scott Carver of the University of Tasmania to produce this latest series of videos to help improve the care of wombats.

The 6 new videos focus on key skills required for the field assessment and in situ treatment of wombats with mange disease and are intended for use by wildlife carers and veterinary professionals. Sarcoptic mange is a debilitating infectious disease impacting wombats, which if left untreated has significant welfare impacts and can lead to the death of affected animals.

A huge thanks to Dr Aditi Sriram and Ron Haering of the DPE for facilitating this project and being so terrific to work with. And to Associate Professor Scott Carver who shared his extensive knowledge and expertise about these beautiful creatures and this terrible disease with us.

Videos can be accessed FREE in the Versatile Vet video library now
or via the DPE Standards of Care page. The videos form a part of the DPE’s Curb Wombat Mange program which is also accessible online.

Please note the Code of practice for injured, sick and orphaned wombats applies to the wildlife rehabilitation sector in NSW and outlines the welfare needs of these animals for rehabilitation and release, as well as the management of risks to the health and safety of rescuers. Regulation and legislation around interaction with wombats and wildlife can vary across jurisdictions.

Do you feel adequately prepared to recognise and respond to a potential zoonotic risk? 🐮🐴🐷🐦🐭🐶🐱🦎🐮👩‍🔬🧑‍🔬

It's World Zoonoses Day, and as a part of this day it is important to acknowledge the role of veterinarians in surveillance, biosecurity and management of diseases that have the potential to impact humans.

Veterinarians have extensive training in all aspects of animal health and yet the risks are always evolving in an increasingly interconnected world. Continual training in emergency disease protocols and procedures are essential for a rapid and efficient response to an outbreak.

"Death granules"...yikes. Interesting post from Clinical Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University

Peritoneal fluid from a dog with a hepatic mass and septic peritonitis: The fluid had a high nucleated cell count, consisting mostly of neutrophils with low numbers of macrophages, some of which were leukophagocytic (large cell in the center lower section of the image), indicating suppurative inflammation or an exudative effusion. An unusual finding was the presence of blue-green granules in rare neutrophils (arrow). The granules are compatible with lipofuscin, supporting concurrent liver injury. An aspirate of the liver mass revealed necrosis, inflammation, cholestasis, and marked atypia in hepatocytes, compatible with a hepatocellular carcinoma.
Lipofuscin granules in neutrophils have been termed “death granules” as they are associated with severe hepatocellular injury, which often leads to the demise of the affected animal.
Rare intracellular bacterial rods were identified in the peritoneal fluid smear (not depicted in this image) and Escherichia coil was cultured from the fluid.

It's World Veterinary Day and this year the focus is on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in the veterinary profession.

People of different backgrounds bring with them unique perspectives and experiences that can contribute to a more holistic and effective approach to veterinary care. By welcoming differences, we can create a safe and welcoming environment for veterinary staff and clients, and also opportunities to broaden our knowledge and understanding of veterinary science and the world we live in.

Learning more about more is what we love at Versatile Vet, and we are grateful for how much we learn in every way from the diverse experts who give so generously of their time to this project.

Have you thought about the specific considerations involved in treating guide dogs?🦮

These are working animals, responsible for the safety of their visually impaired owners, and any medical or surgical intervention could impact not only them, but the owner.

It's International Guide Dog Day, and this is a good summary article from Improve Veterinary Practice that introduces some of these important points, as well as how to better to look after a client with a visual impairment:

It's World Health Day, and the World Health Organisation is celebrating 75 years of improving public health.
It's a good time to remember that animal health is a critical component of public health, and a 'One Health' approach that considers humans, animals and the environment is essential to a healthy future.
