Getting Started Training Your Cat: Supplies Needed

The biggest question we get is "where do I start?" We considered what we believe is absolutely essential to train your cat, and picked the top three supplies you need to get started with a variety of tricks and behaviors.

#1: The Training Clicker

You really can't get away without this one. The clicker is a marker, meaning it marks the exact moment your cat does what you want to reinforce. Without a precise behavior marker, your cat can be confused about what exactly is being rewarded. The clicker makes a unique, crisp sound that your cat never hears at other times, making it the best training marker. Some trainers use a verbal marker, but it takes a lot of extra practice to use your voice as crisp, clean, and consistently as a clicker. Save yourself and your kitty some frustration and start right away with a training clicker!

Alternatives to using a clicker if you can't get one right away can include the click-click of a ballpoint pen and a clicker app for your phone.

#2: Treats Your Kitty Loves

If your cat isn't interested in the paycheck you are offering, give them a raise! Some kitties can be finicky, and experimentation may be needed until you find a treat that they are willing to work for.

Our favorite treat ideas include squeeze treats such as Inaba Churu, TikiCat Stix, and Squeeze-Ups. Wet food in a syringe also works well for many kitties. For the calorie-conscious carnivore, PureBites Freeze Dried Chicken is a great option too.

Free-fed kitties are very difficult to train. Why work for anything when you can graze for free anytime? Before beginning training, you should first switch your cat over to scheduled mealtimes. This is much healthier for cats overall; they were meant to hunt and forage for their meals, not to graze. They are not sheep after all! We also recommend feeding from puzzle feeders for mental enrichment.

#3: The Target Stick

Targets are an essential element in training cats. Targets remove the need for luring with treats, which can cause frustration and too much concentration on the food rather than the kitty really thinking and using problem-solving skills. Targets can include target sticks, target discs, and target mats. Even your finger can be used as a target.

When choosing between all of the target types, if I had to pick just one I would recommend the target stick, as it is the most versatile and opens the door for a wide variety of tricks and behaviors. Examples of behaviors that can be trained using a target stick include sit, spin, beg, come, leash walking, jumping through arms and hoops, and leg weaves.

There are many target sticks available on the market for training dogs and other animals. When choosing a target stick for a cat, a yellow or green ball on the end of the stick is easiest for cats to see. You can also make your own target stick with a pencil, dowel, or wooden spoon.

Moving beyond target sticks, you can use a small mat for a different type of target. Placemats and dish mats work great for cats! This type of target is great for teaching stays and distance behaviors.

About Us

Cat Trick University is the creation of a positive dog trainer that wanted the world to see the potential in their cats. Elizabeth Sandoval, Certified Trick Dog Instructor and owner of Stay Positive Animal Training found herself pet-less after the sudden passing of her 11 year old border collie Jake. After Jake's passing she needed a new pet both to fill her home and heart with joy and to demo training to her clients, but she was not quite ready for another dog so soon. Enter McGregor, a spunky little British Shorthair kitten. Immediately the plan was to raise McGregor with the same socialization and positive reinforcement training routine as a puppy, and so began his trick training career. McGregor earned his Novice Trick Cat title from Do More with Your Dog at 11 weeks old, becoming the youngest cat in the world to earn a trick title. Shortly after, at 14 weeks old, McGregor earned his Intermediate Trick Cat title. As tiny little McGregor's trick videos became popular and cat training questions began to flood in, Cat Trick University was born. McGregor continues to learn and grow every day, and so will Cat Trick University along with him!
