Let’s play a new game! Not only do you have to pick your fav, but you have to caption it. 👏

These are the seriously late set of stills for Harper’s pups, as they are almost 5 1/2 weeks now. But I think you’ll forgive me, right?

Because the puppies are fully aware of their environment now, we are implementing all sorts of socialization protocols. Adding the slide is always one of my favorite things, as one common puppy motto is to attack first, ask questions later.
🐾
Thus they leap on to the slide, finding themselves elevated before realizing how they got there. Or, they shakily climb the stairs & find themselves heading down the slide, uncertain of exactly what is happening. Oh, how I love the look on their faces!

This one experience confers a mountain of valuable brain growth. Not only is there the tactile sensation of a new item, but there is the confidence building that occurs with mastery of the slide (which they are all determined to conquer). Problem-solving skills develop & the experience of identifying something new & then exploring it helps build resilience. It’s rather amazing to watch.

In a few more days they will graduate to the “big dog” playground, but for now, we will enjoy this last bit of wobbly puppyhood.

A lot of you ask how the puppies & mamas do when Gotcha Day finally comes. So let’s dive in.

At 8 weeks of age, the puppy brain has undergone massive transformation & brain waves approximate those of an adult dog. And yet, they are squarely within that magical learning window that is unique through 12/14 weeks of age. They are processing & storing information differently than they will at any other time in their life, & they are ready to transition to their permanent environment for the balance of the socialization period.

One thing we always encourage our families to do is to think through what life with them will look like, & to get puppy into those environments before 12 weeks of age. For example, we’re a lake family. So a new puppy of ours simply must have positive lake encounters. We start slow - merely seeing & smelling the lake from afar. And we build from there, every couple of days adding additional elements such as walking on the dock (yes, even though vaccinations aren’t done! Head up, at a trot, lots of treats from human to pup), sitting in the boat, & putting on the life vest.

Whatever a puppy will do with his forever family - camping, hiking, going to the beach, attending soccer games, visiting nursing homes - puppy needs to have positive associations with those experiences between 8 and 12/14 weeks of age.

We have been talking about whether mama & pups get sad on Gotcha Day, & I already addressed the difference between sadness & stress. But let’s talk about mama specifically.

Obviously dogs cannot talk, so I can only tell you what I’ve observed. That, plus research that gives us great insight.

As far as I can tell, the mama dogs are not sad. That’s my anecdotal observation. But we also do things that work against stress in the mama.
🐾
For example, our mamas are fully weaned by the time pups are 7 weeks of age. By the time pups go home, she is back to her pre-puppy exercise regimen & food intake. Her brain is shifting out of motherhood.

The other biggie is that we always have mama leave before her puppies. At the age of 7-8 weeks, the puppies are used to her being absent for significant periods of time. She chooses to go do other normal doggie things, like wrestle with the other big dogs & lay in the sun.

Kitti went home before her puppies and her guardian family sent me wonderful updates (I’ll post in stories). She bounced right back to normal. She is so treasured & adored by her family that her love tank is utterly full. No sadness in that mama! More on the research coming soon

We have so much to accomplish before these little ones go to their new homes. Certainly exposure to more textures for those paws, but also to things like wheeled contraptions (bicycles, rolling trash cans, scooters) & different kinds of people.
