You can teach an old dog new tricks!
Yesterday, Nadia who will be exactly 10 and a half years old on Monday, closed out the third and final Q she needed for her Rally Novice!

We didn’t really have a chance to prepare the way we would have wanted but one thing I’ve always appreciated about Nadia is her ability to simply hop off the couch and go!

Since she has two herniated discs in her neck since April, this is formally her last trial in competitive sport. She still wants to be active and do things with us, but playing and hanging out, going on walks or doing tracking for fun is very different from formal competing or training.

Still proud to say I had a dog in good enough shape that I kept titling my Doberman at 10 yrs old!

It has been a very busy past few months and we've been remiss to mention a few of the milestones and accomplishments!

But between attending two national doberman events (one of which we were co-organizing), placing a bid for a third national event, as well as supporting local clubs, we've hardly had a moment to catch our breaths!

The UDC 2025 National Championship happened at the end of April. We had Vanir (Ch Themiscyra's Gift of the Vanir CSAU CGC TKN PTT YTT WAC VBM), Elsa (UDC-Ch GCH Themiscyra's Step Into your Power BH-VT CSAU CGC CGN TT ATT WAC VSM) and Nadia (UDC Gold CH Sunrock Cherry Blossom Lady
SD GPr1 UPr1 CSAU ATT NBAR SPOT CGN CGC BSA-G1a WAC TT AD VCX NTD TKN VPM) with us, and picked up a friend's dog.

Vanir earned his Youth Temperament Test (YTT) from the UDC with flying colours, then followed up by earning two CCs at the conformation shows (however, as a Youth, only one of these will count towards his UDC Ch). He wrapped up his week by boldly earning his WAC, becoming the first of the Valhalla vikings to earn the title!

Elsa was entered only in the Breed Survey Basic, which she passed with an Excellent score in conformation, and good temperament - however as the BSB offers no grips, it is not possible to have the highest score. And of course, an "a" rating for health!

Nadia was not entered in anything, she was just along for the ride and to show people what a 10 year old doberman SHOULD look and act like... full of pep and zest for life!

Meanwhile I (Amaya) also furthered my apprenticeship in temperament testing as an apprentice-judge!

Happy 12th Birthday (a day late!) to Tank (Am Ch Ashtrick N Kettle Cove Triple Play CA), the sire of our very first litter, the Frozen litter (out of Nadia), and grandsire to the Valhalla litter!

Tank is in a rarified group of dobermans to reach this age or older and we couldn’t be more grateful for the fact he is part of our program’s foundation. His owners continue to bring him out and include him in activities, he is still sharp and alert and in fantastic shape for his age. We wish him several more years of vitality and joy!

With him being 12 and Nadia now being 10.5 years old, the Frozen litter will be eligible for their BFL1 longevity certification, when Tank and Nadia apply for their LCs.

We hope his children and grandchildren will enjoy as many years ahead of them as him 🥰

WAE

With the upcoming DPCC National Specialty events coming up at the end of June, it is time to introduce people to the different events available to enter! Not everyone is familiar with the different sports, and we hope people will consider entering various activities with their dogs if they know a little bit more about what they entail.

Doberpalooza Event Spotlight: WAE

What is it?
The Working Aptitude Evaluation - the WAE, is a temperament test created by the Doberman Pinscher Club of America with the goal of preserving the doberman’s natural instincts and abilities as a capable working dog. The dog is scored on 9 different stations divided amongst 5 different exercises. A dog that gets a passing score on all elements will earn a Working Aptitude Certificate and may add WAC to their dog’s official titles.

What do I need to enter?
Purebred registered dobermans of an allowed colour over the age of 18 months can participate. The equipment is provided at the test, so you don’t need to purchase a special leash or collars.

What kind of training do I need?
None. In fact, the handler is not allowed to use any formal obedience commands with their dogs. The goal of the test is to see how the dog will react naturally. You can prep your dog by exposing them to certain aspects, but you do not need any special training. The judge also does a walkthrough before the test to answer questions and instruct you through the test.

Why does it matter and why should you enter?
It is a fantastic way to learn something new about your dog. Do you wonder if your doberman would protect you in real life against a bad guy? Are you convinced your dog would have no issues when challenged? Now is the time to find out!

The WAE is also generally a fun event! It is a great way to support our national breed clubs as well as promote the desired temperament for the breed. Because it is open to all registered dobermans, it is accessible to dogs who don’t have any special training as sport or working dogs. Even if your doberman is your full time beloved pet, and don’t have any special training for show sor sports, they too can enter the WAE and possibly earn a title! Your breeder will be incredibly proud of you and your dog if you obtain a WAC.

Additionally, for breeders and serious fanciers, the WAE is a required title for the Register of Merit program with the DPCA (ROM title) and it is also a mandatory test to obtain the CHIC. Here in Canada it is one of the qualifying temperament tests for the ROMC (Register of Merit Canada) and as such is highly coveted and prestigious.

And if you do not currently have a doberman to call your own, this is a really fun event for spectators to watch, and learn about temperament and character, as well as learn more about the breed. Volunteers with the test stations and spectators more than welcome!

Nadia, my sweetest cherry blossom love... I chose your call name because it comes from the root word for 'hope' in all slavic languages, and indeed... for the last 10 years, you have carried my hopes and dreams. I remember waking up 10 years ago with notifications from your breeders that Sin was whelping... I was third in line for a girl and how I hoped there was one for me! Only 2 girls were born, but the person ahead of me ended up declining, and so I got to call you mine.

I chose your registered name, Cherry Blossom Lady since the litter's theme was Nature, and to me the Cherry Blossoms evoke the same hope, the renewal of spring, and the promise of sweet, gentle, warm days ahead.

Nadia... 10 years ago you were the best belated birthday gift, and today, by celebrating your 10th birthday you have given me such a wonderful, belated birthday gift. Everything I have in life now, including life itself, is because of you and thanks to you. I would not be alive without you. I would not have the wonderful people in my life I do thanks to you. I would not have my passion for dobermans without you, I would not have my breeding program without you.
Nadia, my shadow, my faithful service dog, my hero! My first sport dog who has taken me on an incredible journey of learning and discovery in the dog world, and given me the burning flame to give back to this breed, and share with the world the wonders that are you! I have learned so much from you and thanks to you, and I will continue to do so as long as you are by my side... and even one day when you transition, I will have your paw prints in your offspring and your grand pups.

I can hardly believe, for so many reasons - but goodness, how time flies when you're having fun!

Happy happy 10th Birthday to UDC Gold Ch Sunrock Cherry Blossom Lady SD GPr1 UPr1 CSAU ATT NBAR SPOT CGN CGC BSA-G1a WAC TT AD VCX NTD TKN VPM !!

With both Nadia and Tank now eligible for their Longevity Certificates, the Frozen litter (Tank x Nadia) will be eligible for their BFL1! (Bred For Longevity 1)

I had cupcakes custom made with cherry blossoms to be delivered at my work place as a thank you to all the vets, techs and a-techs who have helped care for her over the years... and an extra special one with less sugar and less icing just for Nadia!

We've been slacking on the updates, but you'll forgive us for having a busy Summer so far!

Our keepers from the Sarek x Elsa litter both finished their Canadian Championships several weeks ago.

Eivor the female is now BBPIG Ch Themiscyra's Thórduna PTT and Vanir the male is BPILS BPIG Ch Themiscyra's Gift of the Vanir PTT.

Both are done with CKC showing for now, in order to focus on the continued foundational work for working sports like IGP and Ringsports for which they have received a lot of positive feedback from several different trainers. We cannot wait to see how they continue to mature and develop!

It is worth reminding that their sire Sarek is 100% working lines and while their dam Elsa is an excellent working dog, she is in fact from showlines! We feel so incredibly blessed that these puppies are turning out to be the best of both worlds!

Today is a very special day! Tank, the sire to our Frozen litter celebrates his 11th birthday!
Tank is Am CH Ashtrick N Kettle Cove Triple Play CA (AmCH Trotyl de Black Shadow WAC x AmCH Mystikos N Kettle Cove Celtic Love CGC LC-11D)

Wishing Tank and his human family many more years together! And may he pass on his good health and longevity to his offspring and their descendants too ❤️ So blessed to have him as one of the founding cornerstones of the program, and thankful to his breeders/owners who approved our Nadia to him!

It’s crucial for breeders to prioritize the health and longevity of their dogs, and prospective puppy buyers should ask detailed questions and request evidence of health testing. Here are some things to consider when researching breeders:

1. Health Testing: Ensure the breeder conducts all relevant health tests for their breed. This might include tests for hip dysplasia, eye conditions, thyroid, dentition, heart issues (in Dobermans: yearly echocardiograms and 24 hour holters), and any breed-specific genetic tests.
2. Necropsies: If a dog dies unexpectedly, from an accident, or at a young age- a necropsy can provide valuable information about potential genetic health issues that might be present in the bloodline. Breeders should be open and willing to share these results.
3. Pedigree Analysis: Look for longevity in the pedigree, but also inquire about the health and cause of death of dogs in the lineage. This can reveal potential issues. Remember that the information is only as good as the person providing it!
4. Puppy Buyer Demands: Buyers have a significant influence on breeding practices. By demanding transparency and high standards, buyers can encourage more responsible breeding practices.

A buyer’s approach to emphasizing the importance of thorough health testing and necropsy for early deaths is a critical step towards improving the health and longevity of future generations of dogs. Please purchase responsibly!

Food for thought. Do you want a puppy that was raised in a facility/kennel environment? Or one who has been raised in someone’s home with care, love, and enrichment?

As a breeder I take a lot of pride in how I care for my puppies. They’re raised in our house and are exposed to sights, sounds, socialization, toys, surfaces, and other (safe) dogs- to name a few. 💕
