We've been slacking on the updates, but you'll forgive us for having a busy Summer so far!

Our keepers from the Sarek x Elsa litter both finished their Canadian Championships several weeks ago.

Eivor the female is now BBPIG Ch Themiscyra's Thórduna PTT and Vanir the male is BPILS BPIG Ch Themiscyra's Gift of the Vanir PTT.

Both are done with CKC showing for now, in order to focus on the continued foundational work for working sports like IGP and Ringsports for which they have received a lot of positive feedback from several different trainers. We cannot wait to see how they continue to mature and develop!

It is worth reminding that their sire Sarek is 100% working lines and while their dam Elsa is an excellent working dog, she is in fact from showlines! We feel so incredibly blessed that these puppies are turning out to be the best of both worlds!

It’s crucial for breeders to prioritize the health and longevity of their dogs, and prospective puppy buyers should ask detailed questions and request evidence of health testing. Here are some things to consider when researching breeders:

1. Health Testing: Ensure the breeder conducts all relevant health tests for their breed. This might include tests for hip dysplasia, eye conditions, thyroid, dentition, heart issues (in Dobermans: yearly echocardiograms and 24 hour holters), and any breed-specific genetic tests.
2. Necropsies: If a dog dies unexpectedly, from an accident, or at a young age- a necropsy can provide valuable information about potential genetic health issues that might be present in the bloodline. Breeders should be open and willing to share these results.
3. Pedigree Analysis: Look for longevity in the pedigree, but also inquire about the health and cause of death of dogs in the lineage. This can reveal potential issues. Remember that the information is only as good as the person providing it!
4. Puppy Buyer Demands: Buyers have a significant influence on breeding practices. By demanding transparency and high standards, buyers can encourage more responsible breeding practices.

A buyer’s approach to emphasizing the importance of thorough health testing and necropsy for early deaths is a critical step towards improving the health and longevity of future generations of dogs. Please purchase responsibly!

Food for thought. Do you want a puppy that was raised in a facility/kennel environment? Or one who has been raised in someone’s home with care, love, and enrichment?

As a breeder I take a lot of pride in how I care for my puppies. They’re raised in our house and are exposed to sights, sounds, socialization, toys, surfaces, and other (safe) dogs- to name a few. 💕

First weekend of November, Nadia and I braved the freezing temperatures to trial at Schutzhund Mirabel for our UPr1. I was shocked to say we passed with a score of 84! The UPr1 is a single-phase title/certificate awarded in the sport of IGP for Obedience. The Obedience routine is identical to that of the IGP B phase (obedience). Not bad for a doberman who will be 9 in February!

The judge had some kind words to say about Nadia's work ethic, her energy and her enthusiasm! She was a little wild at the beginning but settled nicely into the work once we started heeling, and she held her long down perfectly. So proud of how far we've come and the incredible life journey this girl has put me on.

BPIG Themiscyra's Gift of the Vanir PTT - "Vanir"
Vanir was awarded Best Puppy In Group at the Caledon Canadian Kennel Club show last weekend out of an amazing lineup of working breed puppies including senior puppies and puppies who had won best of breed, including finished champions!

Thank you Judge Joanne Farnell for this honour! And thank you to his show handler Rafael Puerta.

Vanir is from our Sarek x Elsa work/show cross litter, co-owned by my beautiful spouse and myself.

Last week we got to visit with Siren and Nøkk from the Frozen litter and did the holters on both of them - happy to report normal results for both! Siren got 0 VEs of any kind and Nøkk a singular lonely VPCs.
Health testing is a huge emphasis in our program especially as we are in the early stages. We encourage our owners to do yearly cardiac testing (holter + echo) and where possible regular kidney/liver blood panels as well as regular thyroid panels. And this regardless of whether they are just beloved pets, competitive sport or show dogs, working dogs or breeding dogs. Why? Because most diseases in the Doberman breed have better prognosis with early diagnosis and subsequent intervention. Most of the serious diseases only start showing symptoms in the later stages of the disease when it is often too late to intervene effectively. Secondly Information about the siblings can be critical in assessing a pedigree’s risk factors overall.

Making a good habit of regular blood work for any pets in general can often change outcomes drastically, but this is especially true in breeds known to have certain predispositions.

We are proud and humbled to have responsible owners as part of the Themiscyra family 💜

For those of our puppies who live close enough to visit we holter them when possible at no cost to their owners!

Located: Eastern Ontario
Seeking: Co-ownership preferably in Ontario, QC, NY or New England states. Would also consider a guardian home arrangement.

“Eivor” - Themiscyra’s Thórduna is a black and rust female Doberman puppy. She is the top working pick in the litter and the co-first pick confo female.

Her dam is one of the nicest working Doberman females you are liable to encounter in North America but is from showlines and is a finished Canadian GCH, the sire is from 100% working lines with multiple IGP3, American Schutzhund, agility titles to his name and awesome stable confident drivey and versatile working dog. The litter was bred for health and longevity and working ability while hoping to retain sound structure. Both parents have above average health and longevity in the pedigree for the breed.

The litter has been evaluated for temperament by a professional tester who has background in working line shepherds as well as evaluating and training professional zoo therapy dogs and was graded for conformation by people involved in the Doberman show and performance ring for over 20 years each.

Eivor was assessed as being the top working prospect in the litter with multiple balanced drives, a healthy mixture of confidence, sociability and independence. She reminds me so much of her dam to the point we have nicknamed her mini Elsa, but perhaps more thoughtful and analytical than her. She climbs out of the xpen in a flash, will grip anything presented and is incredibly intelligent. She had the most bone and size of the females in the litter and is perhaps somewhat doggy but her dam was the same way and grew into a feminine yet powerful brood. I am seeking a co-ownership with someone who will work her in a bitesport venue (Preferably IGP, AS, PSA or French Ring) but also let me have her shown to at least her Ch (ideally in Canada for proximity).

Babies will be 8 weeks old tomorrow! Today they had their first set of shots and a clean bill of health - the vet and staff were impressed with the quality of their condition, their bites, their structure as well as Elsa’s!

We have the top working prospect in the litter available on co-ownership, and pending conformation evals tomorrow is also the top female candidate for confo.

We also have 2nd pick working male (3rd overall) who is also possibly top conformation, available as well on co-ownership. We would prefer someone in Ontario or Quebec, NY and New England (VT, MA, ME, NH, CT +/- RI) For more information please send us a message or fill out our contact form on our website http://themiscyradobermans.tumblr.com/submit

We are incredibly pleased to announce our upcoming AC: Valhalla Litter!
"Elsa" GCH Themiscyra's Step Into Your Power CSAU CGN CGC TT ATT WAC VBM
was confirmed pregnant via ultrasound to
Sarek vom Landgraf IGP3 BSA-VG1a AS-BT MX MXJ MXF T2B CAA BCAT

They are a Category 10 Breeding on BetterBred for diversity and the predicted, estimated Embark COI is a very low 25%, +/- 3% on average.

There is above average longevity on both sides of the pedigree, and this pairing was done with health and longevity in mind as well as work ethic, drive, athleticism and the aptitude to perform in bitesport or any sport/work venue. Elsa is a GCH in conformation as well and I am hoping to have some soundly built, structurally correct puppies!

Both parents are fully health tested (and beyond), up to date with full dentitions. Sarek is multiple time IGP3, 14 QQs away from his MACH in Agility and aiming for his AS1 (American Schutzhund) this year. Elsa is prepping for her BH-VT after she has had her puppies and has been working her way through protection training since she was a year old. Her sister Polly is going for her IGP1 this year!

We expect full, calm grips as well as balanced drives with an edge towards sharpness, a handler-oriented, up for anything work ethic but with a good off switch - both parents are full time house dogs and do not live in crates/kennels when not working. Both parents love water to boot.

For this particular litter, prior breed (or similarly high drive working breeds) experience is a must, and we will not be placing puppies in homes with young children.

Pending CKC confirmation, here is Canadian CH Protea’s Zippleback 🏆 Piloted to Perfection by Rafael Puerta Pixel finished from 5 wins, all major in just two weekends going WB and BOW along the way, including under an FCI judge! (This is a big deal as blue and fawns are not allowed under FCI so there is a tendency to prejudice against them, but the judge verified that it was allowed in Canada before awarding her the win yesterday!)

It's been a very busy week for team Themiscyra and there will be more pictures/details to come tomorrow but I am incredibly proud of one of my puppies Polly and her co-owner Elizabeth. While they already had passed their BH-VT in December due to internal rules between the different orgs, in order for the title to be recognized under AWDF, they chose to redo it so that they could compete for the IGP1 at the UDC National Championship next year.
Evidently, they decided to go all out by redoing their BH at the 2022 UDC National Championship. So they did their obedience, right after which they did the trafic test and then right after that ran through the Working Aptitude Evaluation, earning their WAC. All in a day's work eh? For fun they got their CGC the day prior to boot!

Nadia earned her CHIC!
What is the CHIC? The Canine Health Information Center or "CHIC" from the OFA, is a number/certification issued to an individual dog for which all the required breed-specific health testing (and sometimes, such as in the case of the Doberman, temperament testing) has been submitted to the Orthpaedic Foundation for Animals. In other words, it is objective, verifiable, independent proof that your dog has received all the appropriate health testing (or beyond) for the breed. In some breeds a CHIC is considered bare bones minimum to breed. In other breeds it is considered an above and beyond goal. In dobermans a CHIC is difficult to obtain because it requires a temperament certification, and the only recognized one is the DPCA's Working Aptitude Evaluation. Your dog doesn't have to successfully pass and obtain their WAC, but they must have run through it, and unfortunately WAEs are few and far between requiring hundreds if not thousands of miles to find one to attend, when they aren't already full.

As you can see for Nadia, she has not only met the minimum health testing requirements for the breed, but I have also done additional tests which were submitted and have been listed here under the "other tests" section.

However, it is important to know that the CHIC doesn't require your dog to successfully pass their health testing. It is not a warrantor of good health. It is simply a certificate issued to say "this dog has received all the breed-required health tests". To verify whether a dog has PASSED the tests you still must double check their OFA profile or ask to see the OFA certificates for those tests.

Love dobermans but haven't met any or many in person? Think dobermans are beautiful but haven't seen what amazing working and obedience dogs they can be? Want to learn more about the breed, breeding, training, health and selection? Want to learn more about IGP and bitesport, or Search And Rescue? Or are you a dobe handler/owner wanting to try something new/a different venue (or, if you've never really trained at all, want to know if your doberman has breed appropriate temperament?)
Why don't you make a trip down to the United Doberman Club national working, obedience and conformation championship in NY? On top of the championship, there is a lot to see and do in the area - shopping, dining, sight-seeing!
BH-VT, IGP1 and IGP2 open to all breeds.
If you'd like to participate with a dog, sign up here! Your dog does not need to be registered with the UDC to enter the temperament test and conformation show.

Holter Time!
We have 3 echocardiograms scheduled next week. While Nadia’s is up to date since she last had one in august, it is a good idea if feasible to do them twice yearly as your dogs get a little older. We are fortunate to be working with a top cardiologist at a veterinary hospital giving us access therefore to cardioechos rather easily.
Before we echo, we holter!
Nadia goes first since she’s an old pro. Elsa had a dry run with the vest yesterday to make sure she wouldn’t attempt to chew it, it went well so she’ll get her turn after Nadia’s.
Otis will be spending some time with us to get his done as well. In as much as possible we would love to holter all our babies. Hopefully when the border reopens, Nøkk and Siren will get their turns.
Polly’s wonderfully dedicated owner is already on it ;)

Bones should always be given raw, appropriately sized and they should not be weight bearing bones (such as marrow bones, shin bones etc)

BONES, BONES, BONES! I can't even count the number of times people told me they worry about bones splintering and harming dogs. The reality is, crunchy RAW (NOT COOKED) bones are essential for keeping teeth healthy.

Here is a handy chart to explain what bones you can give your dog and what purpose they have: FOOD, DENTAL or PLAY.

Also, here's an article on the topic of bone feeding: https://peterdobias.com/blogs/blog/16688340-what-bones-are-good-for-dogs
