Hatches have been battened! 😆 Horses all got a little grooming before getting their blankets on. Stalls are cleaned and they are all tucked in with plenty of hay and water. Along with our sheepy guests. 🐑 Stay safe today!

What a beautiful day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!
I got to go out and feed early this morning. It was sooo peaceful. The driveway had already been plowed, thank you Kenny!!!!!! And the soft sounds of horses chewing, the snow crunching under their hooves, and the purring of the barn cat as we sat for a few minutes just brought me to a place of stillness that I haven’t been in in quite a while. I needed it. This time of year can be hard- there is yucky weather, crazy schedules, feelings around the holidays of loss but despite everything going on the horses still need fed and chores need done- every day, twice a day (or more). We have a great group of helpers and I am very thankful. And blessed to have my amazing husband who works overtime on his overtime. Thank you! I look forward to warmer days but am going to take this time to be still and find the joy.

You have probably heard bits and pieces about this current outbreak. We typically do not travel for shows and stuff this time of year but I just wanted to pass a long information from a trusted source.

We will be extremely cautious with any horses coming on to the property in the near future and ask that if you go to any other equine facilities that you please use caution and disinfect any shoes, gloves, coats, etc. that are worn at other facilities.

We appreciate your help in keeping our horses at Klassic Key as safe as possible. Any questions just ask.

What is Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)?

You've probably heard it called Rhinopneumonitis, a respiratory tract disease that results in "snotty noses," but EHV is more than that. Depending on the strain, this virus can also cause abortion in broodmares, and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) — the often-deadly neurologic form of the disease.

Because EHV is endemic in many equine populations, most mature horses have developed some immunity through repeated natural infection. However, they remain a source of infection for other susceptible horses, like weaned foals and yearlings, who usually display symptoms of the respiratory form of the disease in autumn and winter. Performance and show horses are also more vulnerable to the disease, as they commingle with unfamiliar equines in close quarters while under stress from travel and competition.

Proper biosecurity protocols can help reduce EHV outbreaks and other disease transmission. A variety of vaccines are also available for protection against both the respiratory and abortive form of the disease, but there is no equine licensed vaccine at this time that has a label claim for protection against the neurologic form (EHM).

Consult your primary equine veterinarian to learn more about this disease and work with them to determine the optimal vaccine protocol for your horses.

You can learn more about all three forms on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website here: https://equinediseasecc.org/infectious-diseases
