Funny story: someone shared this meme with me, many years ago. See that little white fluffy boy in the left? That’s my dog!! 🤣🤣🤣 Someone found the pic and made the meme, and it always makes me giggle that it’s my dog. The other 2 fluffs were my foster babies 💞🐶 and guess what, Darwin gets all the petting every day.

It’s a lesser-known fact that there are tons of rules to follow while operating a rescue. When choosing who to adopt from, it’s very important to examine what’s happening behind the scenes, which is admittedly difficult to do if you don’t even know what you’re looking for. So we thought we would share a few pointers.

Most Rescues have to be registered in the states that they operate (aka adopt/foster) in, especially if they are having animals cross state lines. What makes this tricky, is that every state has different requirements to operate. Responsible rescues are sure to follow the individual requirements for each state. It seems pretty simple, but you would be amazed at how many operations flagrantly disregard state and federal laws.

A great place for you to start is by opening a dialogue with the rescue you are considering. Ask if they are registered, and in good standing, in your state. They should be able to provide you with verifiable documents. Usually, a simple google search can give you some background information. Try the terms “dog rescue registration state of ….”. This will often lead you to your state’s Dept. of Agriculture, and from there you look up what the regulations are and look up registered rescues.

Here’s an example: The state of MA requires rescues to be registered (you can look that up on their state website). If the dog you’re adopting is coming from out of state, the dog needs to quarantine for 48 hours at an approved facility. The dog also needs a health certificate from the state it came from, as well as a vet visit by a MA vet after arrival. Yikes! While it seems like a lot of hoops to jump through, responsible rescues will do it so they can get their dogs into the loving arms of their new families.*

So before picking up your new BFF be sure to do a little digging to ensure the rescue you support is on the up and up.
*A side note, when you wonder why adoption fees are so “high” this is partially why. Rescues have to budget in these expenses to do things right.

If you know of a rescue who does all the right things, show them some love and let us know about them.

We get lots of questions from people about how to choose a rescue. Whether you’re looking to adopt, donate, or volunteer, it’s important to know that the organization you choose is one of quality, compassion, and has good practices.

One thing that sets a responsible rescue above others is how they treat both dogs and people. We all know of rescues who make it virtually impossible to adopt. You know the ones: they require a stay at home parent, no children in the home, a house that is owned, with a fence. Before they will even consider having a conversation with you, you have to meet criteria so exclusive that it often rules out a majority of would-be adopters instantly.

By having wide-sweeping exclusions, it takes away the ability to match the dog and the human as individuals. A reputable rescue is going to get to know the dogs in their care and look for adopters who can meet the specific needs of a particular dog. They are also going to review applicants objectively and work to find them a dog that fits their lifestyle. An example is fencing. I’ve known dogs who are total escape artists and make it their mission in life to breach any enclosure they encounter. If a rescue’s policy is to only adopt to those with a fence, they could be missing out on what’s best for both the dog and a family. On the flip side, a rescue whose policies include evaluating individuals would see that this dog would be best served by an adopter who is a dedicated leash walker. So those applicants with no fencing would be perfect in that case.

I hear time and time again, that people are rejected by a rescue for some of these sweeping policies. It’s frustrating to them and in worst-case scenarios, they decide to forgo rescue altogether. That’s a lose-lose for everyone. Look for a rescue who wants to work with you and works hard to find the perfect fit for the individual dogs in their care.

We’ll be posting more tips about choosing a rescue, so be sure to follow us.

Essential reading for all ages. I’m obsessed with the new book Dogs and people don’t always speak the same “language” and what we consider lovely, dogs see as rude or threatening. Take time to educate yourself, and all of the little ones in your life, about what your dog is telling you.

Let’s talk about dogs on furniture. I am 100% sure that many dog trainers would look at this picture and be horrified. And if it was my dog who passed away, I would be too. He was a JERK! He would get in the furniture and the growl if you sat down and if you told him to get off...well that was another disaster. He could not be on furniture unless invited. Period. Sydney is different, she respects you sitting sown, will even get up and move for you without being asked and welcomes a snuggle. Curious everyone’s thoughts about different rules depending on the dog...share those comments!

When Jillian and I started dreaming about helping dog owners and rescue groups, we brainstormed for weeks about what we wanted to call ourselves. I already had a group named Dogs are Jerks for people to share their doggie shenanigans. Honestly, if you share your life with a dog, you know that it gets crazy sometimes and the best thing to do is laugh about it. We thought about using the name then, but didn't know if the general public would get the tongue in cheek thing about it.

Here we are a few month in, helping rescues make $$ and providing free resources for new adopters and we love it, but to be honest something was missing. We think it's snark! We think it's sharing the ups and downs of living with dogs, all with a laugh.

The truth is, Dogs are Jerks!!! And we freaking love them for it. So, we're changing things up and calling out to our people. The ones who laugh and appreciate how much dogs keep us on our toes. Our goal is the same, to help dogs and people but to also not take anything too seriously.

If you want to see some crazy jerk behavior, I'll link to the group. I promise you're gonna laugh! And if you have any jerky pics to share, post them up here!! We love nothing more than a good jerk pic.
