In case anyone missed the original announcement, British Divers Marine Life Rescue is running a Marine Mammal Medic course in Holland on Sea on the 11th July.

A large seal was hauled out on a concrete ramp in Walton. BDMLR medic Max attended to check it was ok. It seemed in reasonable health but was being bothered and even had a ball thrown at it. The decision was made to move it, though due to the seals large size and seemingly good health it was not ideal.

When I arrived (BDMLR medic Barry) to assist, the site of the cage sent the seal scooting away at some speed so we kept our distance and shortly after the seal went into the sea and swam back towards the backwaters.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue course in Holland On Sea 11th July. Book quickly as last year's events means spaces could go fast.

The lectures will be online and information regarding these will be sent to you before the course date. The course date itself will be practical only covering whale, dolphin and seal rescue techniques.

Regardless of the best intentions by coastal residents and visitors alike, it is important to give resting seals the space they need. Encounters should be cherished but done so from a distance, there is no benefit to a seal from a human encounter and it is often to their detriment. Yesterday we responded to several disturbance calls including this one where members of the public were within a meter of and, digging sandcastles around a 24kg juvenile grey seal. Whilst they appear cute and cuddly this sort of situation can quickly go wrong if the seal feels too threatened. Thank you so much to everyone who has liked the page. I need to make a brief outline to what the induction will cover and then will organise some dates. Probably small groups only to comply with guidelines so I will do a few at different locations along the coast.

This will cover some basic seal information and some guidelines on what to do and what not to do. You will not be learning how to assess or capture seals as that can only be done by approved persons like BDMLR medics, RSPCA or other wildlife organisations approved for that purpose.

BDMLR will be starting medic training again very soon if you are interested.
