Here’s an old friend I haven’t seen enough of lately, Laportea canadensis, our native wood nettle. Less stingers and similar nutritional value, these nettles are still ripe for the picking while the European stinging nettles begin to go to flower.

After all this rain and perfect spring weather (thus far) the Jerusalem artichokes are finally emerging! Excited to give this native perennial space once again in my garden. I especially love them fermented. What plants are you excited for in your garden this year?

I didn’t hang mason

Sometimes it’s better to go into something new without any prior knowledge. That’s how I view my orcharding journey anyway. When I first started going down the fruit tree tending path I had no experience and I followed the style which fit my values and conceptually, made the most practical sense. Why spray all these harsh chemicals? We could be feeding soil biology, supporting the plants’ immune system and planting less disease prone varieties of delicious apples! When I read the Holistic Orchard, I said, ‘this wonderful Elfin gnome man makes so much sense! Michael Phillips is having success with molasses, seaweed, effective microbes and neem oil! Why isn’t everyone doing it this way!?’ I have no where near the experience of a multigeneration, large scale orchardist. But I am proud to travel the orcharding route which Michael Phillips seems to have pioneered. May you Rest In Peace under your favorite apple tree, Mr. Phillips. This cider I drink is for you.
