Movie night with the ladies 🍿
Butch got to enjoy his first night out on the town aka free-roaming the living room with a couple pretty little ladies! He was a little embarrassed about wearing his belly band at first but the girls don’t judge and we didn’t want him to have any accidents in front of his special new lady friends. He appears to be housebroken so far, but just to be on the safe side he’ll keep wearing his belly band for a little while longer whenever he has free-roaming privileges in the house.

Lychee was officially introduced to Duck Duck this morning and they did great!

Towards the end of the video you will notice that I said I was okay with them just hanging out because playtime can be “dangerous”…and I want to clarify what I meant by that statement. Play, especially between dogs with very rough and tumble play styles like these two have, or between dogs who either lack good boundaries or are new to each other CAN be dangerous and should be highly supervised until the dogs show that they can play appropriately together. It is far better to be overly cautious and step in early when play is getting a bit too rough or one dog is being slightly annoying to the other than it is to let the dogs figure it out for themselves.

So for now you can call me Ref…and there will be no fouls on my watch…you hear that girls!

Now go out there, have fun, and play fair!!!

Lychee had her first official weigh in today since she was pulled by Alone No More Dog Rescue. She is currently 50.6lbs and settling in very well. Her intake weight at the shelter was 38lbs, so for now we will shoot for that and adjust her goal weight up or down as needed.

While in reality she doesn’t even need a kennel quite this big currently, in order to help her turn around more comfortably while she loses weight Lychee has been upgraded to a larger wire kennel at least while I am home and able to supervise her. Once she is at an appropriate weight however, she will likely only require a medium size or a slightly taller medium sized kennel similar to the one used by Ducky which will make it much more convenient for her future family to make room for.

Lychee is clearly contemplating what her new life is all about this morning.

She currently has a few bones to pick with me about her sleeping arrangements and probably her ration sizes too. 🤣 After 9 months in the shelter that’s totally understandable though. I’d probably be a little upset also if I thought my living space was suddenly being permanently downsized, but don’t worry Lychee, I promise it’s not permanent. You’ll have plenty of freedom and adventures in no time! 🧡

Training starts DAY 1 whether you have decided to foster or adopt…the only question is who is training who.

But what about giving the dog time to decompress??! You know, the 3-3-3 rule!

I’m glad you asked! Decompression in my opinion doesn’t mean allowing a new dog to do and get away with anything it wants for days, weeks, and months on end. The decompression period is about you as the foster or adopter setting the dog up for success by limiting the potential for the dog to make mistakes. In my experience, dogs only get more comfortable performing existing behaviors (good or bad) and often show new ones once they truly settle in. The decompression period, starting with day one, is your chance to establish the expectations in your relationship, nip any unwanted behaviors in the bud before they become ingrained and reward or teach simple behaviors that you want them to continue in the future.

Save yourself the headache and start early! Too many dogs are returned to the shelter within days, or I would argue worse yet, returned to rescues months or even years after adoption in far worse behavioral shape than they left because people simply don’t put in the bare minimum amount of time to set up a solid foundation in their relationship.

Little miss Lychee has officially made her jail break from the shelter thanks to Alone No More Dog Rescue and she’s never looking back!

This tubby little potato definitely needs to lose a few pounds, so once she’s had a little bit of time to decompress we’ll get a starting weight on her and go from there.

Tonight we did another 10 minutes of muzzle training and mixed it up a little bit my adding in the rest of the gang. I couldn’t find Tater’s tiny muzzle so he got to practice with one that was two sizes too big instead.

This clip happened at the very end, but it is probably my favorite part of muzzle training…the moment that a dog ASKS to put their nose into it without being requested to and then being able to show them that I will keep feeding them as long as they have a desire to keep their nose in it, within reason of course. Tater has to get cut off on my terms because he’ll keep his nose in it all day for food and Banana pushes her face in with such enthusiasm that I don’t want her to accidentally hurt her nose with too many repetitions! 🤣

Ducky has been living with me for 6 weeks now and was officially adopted just over 2 weeks ago, and tonight we finally got around to doing some muzzle training for the very first time. Muzzle training should not be a one day process and it should be made as fun and rewarding as possible. Ducky was distracted by the toys and wanted to play but I wanted to train for a few minutes, so a compromise was made and I let her fetch kibble instead of toys. It was a win win for everyone!

Fyi, the muzzle used in this video is a Baskerville and DOES NOT provide complete protection against bites especially to humans or for dogs who have a tendency to pick up and eat harmful items off the ground since it is designed to allow the dog to be able to take treats and drink while wearing the muzzle. It also does not necessarily provide complete protection to other animals especially if it is the wrong size and not adjusted correctly to the dog. Just be smart. If you see a dog wearing a muzzle, no matter what kind, do not try to stick your fingers in it or allow your children to do so.

‼️IF YOU HAVE A DOG WITH A BITE HISTORY, PLEASE CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL WHO HAS EXPERIENCE IN HANDLING AGGRESSIVE DOGS BEFORE CHOOSING WHICH MUZZLE TYPE AND SIZE TO PURCHASE‼️

Only Duck Duck would wake herself up from a nap with an extra loud and prolonged toot and then proceed to grab me a toy and insist on playing since she’s awake now. 🤣🤣🤣
