🐾TEACHING YOUR DOG ‘LEAVE IT’🐾 Teaching your dog ‘leave it’ can be beneficial in many ways, along with potentially being life saving for them in certain situations. All dogs and puppies will learn this at different paces, so please don’t compare yourself to others. To start off with, we’re picking a low value treat (such as kibble) in one hand and in our other hand, we’re picking a high value treat (such as chicken). We’re then going to put the low value treat hidden in our fist, and showing our dog this. Our other hand is currently behind our back. Your dog may sniff, lick, paw at your fist, but it’s important to have patience and completely ignore them. As soon as they show ANY disengagement (and it will happen!) we say your dog’s mark word and immediately reward. Signs of disengagement may include: ⭐️ Eye contact ⭐️ Looking away ⭐️ Stopping sniffing Again, all dogs will do this at different paces, so as long as they stop showing interest then that’s when we mark and reward! Once they understand what we’re asking of them, we can start to add in our ‘leave it’ cue. We show the fist, once they disengage say ‘leave it’, mark and reward. This can be built up and you can increase difficulty by showing your dog the food, dropping it in front of them or trying it from a different height (eg standing up and no at their level). ⁃ Thanks to Kobe for being my trusty volunteer 😉

Just want to show the amazing progress that Cooper is making at the moment, heel work and his recall 👏🏼 Being a Collie x Retriever, Cooper naturally has lots of energy to burn and loves to have a job! With lots of heel and recall work, me and Cooper have good engagement going on our walks. Today we tested this by walking by a fence with barking dogs behind it - as seen in the video Cooper does have a moment of frustration going forward, but quickly comes to me for direction, as well as smashing that auto sit (🥳🥳!!) High engagement is super important on walks and helps you and your dog deal with anything that can come towards you both 🐾⚡️

And we are open!!!! 🥳🥳 Here at Chesterfield Light Switch on until 6pm🎅🏼🎅🏼
