Gospel Reading for
September 1, 2024

Today’s Gospel reading comes from Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23.

• Verses 1-8:
The Pharisees and scribes focus on external rituals, and Jesus calls out their hypocrisy, emphasizing that their worship is in vain when they prioritize human traditions over God’s commandments.

• Verses 14-15:
Jesus teaches the crowd that what defiles a person is not what enters from the outside, but what comes from within.

• Verses 21-23:
He lists various sins that come from within a person’s heart—evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly.

Reflect:
This teaching encourages believers to focus on inner purity and the transformation of the heart, rather than merely adhering to external traditions .

Why Did Jesus Fold the Napkin?

This is one I can honestly say I have never seen circulating so; if this touches you, you may want to forward it.

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? I never noticed this....

The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed separate from the grave clothes. Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!' Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see.. The other disciple outran Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in.

Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the side.

Was that important? Absolutely!

Is it really significant? Yes!

In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition.

When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it...

The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished. Now, if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table.

The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, 'I'm done.'

But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because........... The folded napkin meant, 'I'm coming back!'

He is Coming Back!

So; if this touches you, you may want to forward it. And praise the name of Jesus!

One Step
“But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom” – Luke 21:14-15

A boy and a horse passed through a dark forest. The boy was terrified at the thought of going through the dark forest. What horrors may linger around the bend? Or behind the trees? Or down in the creek? The horse asked the boy, “Can you see your next step?” The boy said yes. The horse reassured the boy, “That’s all you need.”

Sometimes I find myself stuck, overwhelmed with the journey before me. In a similar way, perhaps the disciples felt overwhelmed with the mission God gave them. Jesus had already forewarned them of the difficulties they’d face—they’d be seized, persecuted, and imprisoned for the sake of His name.

Yet, in the same breath, Jesus reassured them, “I will give you words and wisdom” (Luke 21:15).

Are you going through a struggle and don’t know the next 100 steps to take? It’s OK. You just need your next step. Take that step and God will “give you words and wisdom” for the next step. Edwin s. soriano ([email protected])

Reflect:

What struggle are you currently going through? Knowing what you know now, what immediate step can you take to improve your situation?

Lord, I trust You. With You, I have the courage to take one step forward . . . together.

Gospel | Luke 14:1, 7-11
4 NOV 2023

Humble service is the only sure path to heaven. When we see ourselves as more important to the work of God than others, we are on the precipice of a slippery downhill run. God’s grace is most powerful when we are at our humblest. Let us pray for the grace to live in faith, humility, and in the service of God and His people.

Gospel Acclamation

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.

1 On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. 7 He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at a table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, 9 and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. 10 Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Better Place
“When you are invited, take the lowest place . . . Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.” – Luke 14:10

Our sound system business went bankrupt during the pandemic. It came to a point when I had to work as a driver to put food on our table. Our van was filled with scratches from the equipment it previously transported. With no time and funds for a paint job, I covered it up with Bible verse boards. When I got my salary, I put a basket of free biscuits for passengers in my van.

My wife shared this on social media and in a couple of hours, her post went viral! Newspaper and TV networks contacted me for a feature.

A humble act of kindness never goes unnoticed, especially in the eyes of God. As we honor Him through humility and selflessness, He will raise us up beyond what we can imagine.

Today, let your love be viral, not just on social media, but to every person in your home, community, and workplace. In all that we do, may God be praised even more! Monching Bueno ([email protected])

Reflect:

Does life seem unfair? Does your work seem to go unnoticed? God sees your heart. He will raise us up in His time.

Prayer:

Father God, You see me. Help me to remain humble and always trust in Your plans for my life. Amen.

Reminiscing Man-made Forest of Bilar Bohol. #TheParallelWorld #TheKingMonarch

My husband and I together with our two “anak-anakan” Nana and Sam were able to roam around the beautiful spots of Bohol on November of 2018. But one spot I couldn’t take my mind off was the magnificent man-made Forest of Bilar Bohol. Remembering our travel then, made me want to look back and reflect at it as if I was in the KDrama entitled “The King Monarch”. Travelers going to the Chocolate Hills from Loboc will not truly miss this. The man-made forest covers two kilometer stretch of mahogany trees where the municipality of Loboc meets Bilar. The solemnity of the place captured my being and drag me in a while into silence. Capturing my ears was the sound of the smooth wind blowing into the tress while birds were singing. Seems like I was daydreaming of the parallel world like a fantasy movie. Walking into their shade I raved in admiration, hypnotized by its green and vivid colors right above me and completely forgetting that the street I was walking was a highway. If given the chance again, I would definitely go back here and daydream again.
