Arran Cats

Arran Cats A page where you can find information about cat care and welfare. We do not provide Vet advice/care Do not take offence our focus is always the cat.

This page leads on from its past history as a cat rescue to a new chapter of providing help and advice on cat care and welfare with some fun in between! It should not be seen as replacement for seeking veterinary advice and care. Where in the opinion of the page it is deemed that vet care should be sought you will be told in no uncertain terms.

This wee boy may not be on Arran but I have worked with Angie of Angus Cat Rescue in the past and she does amazing work for cats far and wide. This treatment for FIP is showing us that it doesnt necessarily mean a death sentence anymore for cats who get it. Its a long and costly treatment but saves lives!
If you can help even in a small way please donate.
Thank you!!

Another update on Dylan!

Just so you can see how well he's doing! He had a check up a few days ago at the vets and she is really pleased with his progress.... she did a really good job though!!
If he looks a bit grumpy because Mr 'Tripod' Dylan has his heart set on the great escape and is being foiled at every turn! But that shows the amazing will power of cats doesnt it! They wont be daunted by whatever comes their way!
Well done Dylan and its really good to see him and thank you everyone again this pic wouldnt be here but for you.

Just a quick update on Dylan!
He got home this afternoon and the house was in a state of preparation for his arrival.... making sure he can't get up on things, clamber on windowsills, climbs stairs etc.... he is in a dog crate but moaning like hell about it! He's escaped twice from his cell! He was told it was for his own good...but you know cats they know better!
Anyhow all is calm and his best friend Layla is guarding him and providing much emotional support!
This is a pic of him a couple of years back - isnt he handsome!
We are all rooting for you Dylan...be a good boy for Mummy!

Dylan

The update on Dylan!

He had his op this afternoon and the vets says he has come through with flying colours!! He has already eaten two pouches of food and is a bit grumpy about his missing leg! But the food helped enormously!
He will stay in vets for a few days and all being well will go home early next week!
You can imagine the relief of Fiona his owner and of course all of us! It is absolutely fantastic news!
A huge THANK YOU has to go to each and everyone of you who helped with well wishes and donations!
It has been just stunning and really quite teary eyed watching those donations leap last night and this morning from people who don't know Fiona or Dylan but who felt for his plight and hers and who love cats and know they are part of our family. It is humbling to have had such a response to the plea for help. THANK YOU doesnt seem enough but as soon as I can get some pics or another update be assured will let you know...THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fiona and her daughter have been thanking everyone too on her own page and she has asked me to pass on her THANKS ..she said she never thought they would reach the target let alone more than that and that will help with her worries over the follow up vet trips once hes home and the meds he will need for a while until his wound heals.
YOU are all AMAZING!

In Brodick yesterday, in a no through road with a 20mph speed limit, a black cat was hit by a vehicle. His rear leg was badly broken and caused bleeding such that he has lost a copious amount of blood. He is currently stable and in the vets and obviously the owner is incredibly upset. He is a member of the family, and as most cat lovers know, not just a cat!
Someone drove through this quiet road managed to hit him and then drove on, not stopping and not letting his owner know what had happened. It is residential area and most folk here would be resident in this location. That's not to say it is a resident sadly we do not yet know. What is appalling is that they didn't stop and help him. The owner is now facing a possible £1,000 vet bill as luckily for him his leg can be amputated but his life of exploring his small territory will be curtailed. He isn't a bird killer and adores his chicken friends.
Please can you help raise the funds ? I know its a bad time of year but even a £1 will help. A Go-fund page has been set up and this is the link https://gofund.me/f6d33ef9

Each photograph in Walter Chandoha. Cats. Photographs 1942–2018 is remarkable; a demonstration of what made Walter’s work so iconic. In his images, cats take on multiple characters, flying through the air, slinking around in packs, laughing with young girls, or yawning. And these images have had a profound effect both on the commercial and artistic worlds of photography.

“He was the go-to animal photographer in the Mad Men Era for all the big print advertising campaigns. He’s also the author of several classic books on how to photograph animals," Reuel continues. "When Andy Warhol needed inspiration for his illustrated book from the 1950s, 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue P***y, he turned to Walter’s cat photography book.”

It’s this duplicity – the fact that existed in both of these spaces at once – which makes Walter’s work so impactful still today; his legacy can be seen throughout the world of creativity. In conclusion, Reuel adds: “Walter was equally adept in colour, black and white, he could formally shoot cats in the studio, he could photograph stray cats roaming the streets of 1950s New York, he could shoot them in action like a sports photographer and he could take beautiful portraits of cats with his children in their farm in New Jersey. He had an amazing eye, but to be really great, your pictures need to have a soul and Walter’s certainly did."

Once again the heights claims a feline victim.
Today it was a large tabby and white male, unneutered and unchipped.
Luckily, Diane and Colin came by and have him in their care and it will be buried along with the other nameless felines killed on that section of road.
Diane will undoubtedly name this magnifent boy and he is a handsome one!!
Wishing you a safe and peaceful onward journey little man

And, I shall wait for you
For you to come back home
For my life is not much
Whilst you are gone

Some food and a small box hidden in the bushes or under your veranda can make all the difference.. Care.. dont just expect others to care.. the world wont change with intentions but with actions.
A plastic storage container filled tightly with straw, sealed the lid and provide a hole to enter and exit... under shelter if possible. BUT best of all.... find a place in your home ###

Cats can and do suffer with frostbite and hypothermia. (even in the rain hypothermia can set in if the cat gets too cold or wet)
Even with an outdoor shelter, if its too large as in a shed, damp bedding (dont use material bedding, use straw (not hay) will all add up to a cat becoming very cold.
Don't leave them out at night! They don't go hunting...they are forced to find somewhere to sleep outside. Cats sleep for about 16-18 hours per day, hunting is more normal around the hours of dusk and dawn...older cats and young kittens especially are more vulnerable.

Emanuele Grandi's moving poem dedicated to our four-legged friends.
"If you are afraid of having given me few caresses, you should know that I have not forgotten even one.
If you regret having scolded me even once, you should know that I don't even remember it.
If you think you've left me alone for too long, you should know that I've always been waiting for you.
If you are afraid of having spent little time with me, you should know that I, even that little, have enjoyed every moment.
If you think you've played little with me, you should know that I've never counted the times you threw the ball at me.
If you think I've forgotten about your perfume, you should know that even now I'm smelling it in the wind.
If you wanted to be reborn in another life, you should know that I would like to be your puppy in that one too.
If you are convinced that you have some flaws, you should know that for me you have been the perfect one.
If you believe that love can have an end, you should know that in my heart the place of love is infinite.
If you think you have regrets about me, you should know that I would not change a single second of the life I have spent with you.
If you think I no longer hear your voice when you call me, just entrust the sunset breeze with the task of bringing me your words.
If you think I can forget your face, you should know that I wanted to live alone to enjoy your look.
If you think I could have loved someone more than you, you should know that I have loved you more than myself.
If you think I would like a soft sofa, know that with you I would also have slept on the stones.
If you think I wanted more than you gave me, you should know that I've always felt
like the happiest puppy in the world.
If you have ever felt alone, you should know that I have never left my place next to you.
If you think my life has been short, you should know that I wouldn't have wanted to live a minute longer if I hadn't spent it by your side.
If you are afraid that I am no longer near you, know that as soon as you close your eyes I will fall asleep next to you.
If you think you have not made the right decision, you should know that I have always trusted you.
Always.”
