Helping Paws - Okanagan, Canada We facilitate adoption in B.C., WA, and OR of dogs abandoned in Texas Texas has a dog problem, or to be more accurate - a dog owner problem.

Many people don't spay/neuter their pets. Many don't use preventatives for heartworm, ticks and fleas. But worst of all is the attitude that dogs are disposable. The cute puppy whose owner didn't bother to train chews a shoe and gets driven to the end of a country lane and dumped. There are estimated to be over 500,000 stray dogs in Houston alone. Pounds have a mandate to euthanize when full. Stra

ys often only get a 3 day hold. Owner surrenders have no hold before eu. Helping Paws - Okanagan works with volunteers in southern Texas who network dogs in pounds to find adopters or rescues to save them. These volunteers are very good at assessing dogs' demeanours and we trust their judgement. Usually that is all we know about a dog when we decide to rescue it. We pull dogs from the pounds often not knowing whether they have heartworm or other diseases until they are seen by a veterinarian. Unexpected medical treatments, and boarding because of a shortage of fosters, makes rescuing Texas dogs an expensive proposition. The alternative for these dogs doesn't bear thinking about. Occasionally a caring person rescues a stray, and cares for it in their home until a forever home is found for the dog. We vet those dogs and find adopters in British Columbia, Washington or Oregon states. Street feeders (street angels) feed strays and make posts of dogs on their feeding route. Occasionally we rescue some of these, usually needing donations for the extra medical care for broken legs, mange, wounds, and boarding to get them safe immediately. The dogs you see on this page are some of the lucky few that were rescued and will get out of Texas, and make the 2400 mile journey to their furever home. We appreciate you opening your home to them, and they will too. We do not have a local facility. The dogs arrive directly to their adopters or to foster homes. Donations are very much appreciated. Paypal using gift/friend option to [email protected] or etransfer to [email protected]

Thank you
Lesley Chapman, Founder of Helping Paws - Okanagan
p.s. Toby started this endeavour. I rescued him in February 2019 from Chambers County pound and he is now a certified service dog in Penticton, British Columbia He is in the Happy Tails photo album

All pups have gone through introduction to a dog and a cat, and all did a great job
Isabelle is potty trained, crate trained, and working on Sit and Come (see videos in this post)

All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, microchipped, and dewormed. Isabelle is heartworm negative.

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION IN B.C., Washington, Oregon ***
Minnie is the sweetest little girl. A petite black lab/border collie (?) mix, about 1.5 yrs old and 40lb. Loves people, very well behaved, submissive, playful, doesn't get on furniture, leaves the cat alone. Great with other dogs. Would be fine as an only dog with doggie friends.

Jake needs a new foster (or better yet, a home of his own).
He is a sweet boy with other dogs and with people, just not good at living with small critters like cats and ducks.
He is currently in Lake Country, but transport can be organized.

Jake would love to hang out with adults who will continue his socialization and basic training. "He’s great if I didn’t have tiny cats and birds. Like realistically a fantastic dog"
He is good with dog savvy, calm older children.

Jake doesn't need to live with another dog. He has been very happy going to the dog park to make friends.
Most weekends he hangs out at the park with his foster and her friends, chewing a bone and watching the world go by.

Jake is super smart and has mastered leash walking, Sit, and recalls to 'Jack' (which his foster thought was his name ;) )
He is great off leash hiking.
Jake/Jack is house trained and crate trained.
He is good in the house - doesn't chew or damage anything, though he gets into food if left out and is known to counter surf.
All trainable, and it helps to have lots of toys and bones available.

Jake really just needs to get more used to living in the human world.
He spent the first 6 months of his life in an outdoor pen with his siblings, with little human interaction or other dogs.
He just needs further socialization and basic rules and boundaries, while he waits for his furever home.
Oh, and cuddles 😻

Jake is about 8 months old and 65lb, a mix of lab, shepherd and probably more ;)

*** ADOPTED *** now named Zico, meaning courageous, unique and Charismatic in Persian ❤

Bingo is a male spitz/aussie mix (?) about 6 months old, 35 lb.

Bingo was found several days after hurricane Beryl. He was in a small friendly pound and went to a foster home a few days ago.

Bingo is very friendly and LOVES being with people. He is smart, knows basic commands, and is a well behaved puppy. He loves playing with his toys and running around.
Bingo does amazing walking on leash, and sits on command.
Not sure if potty trained due to being in a kennel, but he does potty outside when let out.
He does great with other dogs. See video in comments of him playing with another pound dog.
Active but not crazy energy.
Met a cat and got a bit excited but was easily corrected (see video in comments).

More photos and videos of Bingo are in the comments (change Most Relevant to All Comments). All dogs in the pound are available and are in his and Minnie’s videos.

All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, microchipped, and dewormed. Bingo is heartworm negative.

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION in B.C., Washington state, Oregon ***

Minnie is a female lab mix about 18 months old, 40 lb. No more growing :)

She was seized with other dogs on a property who were cruelly confined with no water access in the Texas heat. We think she had puppies but none were found. She was taken to a small local pound and is now in a foster home.

Minnie’s name was inspired by her petite size and adorable personality. She is really sweet and loves to play with other dogs and toys. She is very friendly and spins with excitement when someone visits her kennel or it’s time to eat.
She is a petite pup that gets along great with other dogs (see video in the comments, of her playing with another pound dog).
She walks fine on leash but probably has not been trained at all.
Active but not crazy energy.
Likes playing in water.
Met a cat and was scared of it (see video in comments)

Minnie is now in a foster home. Indoors for the first time😻
Her foster says every time we chat how easy Minnie is compared to most fosters. 😻
"I had one accident first day and since then no accidents in the house or in her crate. I have had her 3 days and her personality is starting to come through. She is so cute and small. She gets along with my dogs and leaves the cat alone. She has a nice mat on the floor and that’s where she stays. I crate her for sleeping with a blanket over her crate first night the cat was outside and scared her so she barked. I covered up and no sound since. She eats in crate. She is not food possessive and Maggie (bulldog) let her eat her food. That says a lot. She is learning to play. She will come for pets will take time but I can see her cuddling eventually. "

Minnie has met the grandchildren and did great (see video in comments)

All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, microchipped, and dewormed. Minnie is heartworm negative.

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION *** Being fostered in Lake Country but can be transported within BC. Adopters south of the border may pick up just north of the border.

Jake is an 8 mo old black male lab/shepherd mix (?), about 55 lb. He looks much like his momma, who weighs 60 lb. His dad is a Dutch Shepherd (photos of parents in comments)

Behaviour: Clumsy, funny and full of love. Jake is hilarious. He is good with people who let him choose to say Hi first. Jake can be a little nervous in new situations because he has had limited life experience so far, but he adjusts well. His foster has done a great job of socializing him by bringing him to the park downtown and hanging with dog-savvy people. He has learned to hang out chewing his bone and snoozing while his humans play sports.

Good with dogs: Jake looooves other dogs his size and bigger, and they love him. He plays well with other dogs (see videos in the comments) and is medium energy. Jake respects other dogs’ boundaries and plays differently with his foster’s senior dog than with her other puppy.

Jake doesn’t seem to like small high energy dogs though (but how many dogs do...? )

Cats: No cats or other small animals, as his herding instincts/prey drive kick in.

Children: No small children. We think the pups were hit when they were young, as they react to sudden hand movements near their heads. Young childrens' sudden movements would scare Jake.

Housetrained: Yes

Training: Great on a leash. Getting much better with recall and is now doing off-leash hikes. He is good about checking in often while off-leash.
Intelligent and very treat motivated, which helps with training. Sensitive about being scolded, which also help with training.

Crate trained: Good in crate, sleeps through the night and when his foster is gone at work. He’s happy in his crate with a kong and frozen treats. Happy to sleep in a crate or on the bed with you.

Really good on car rides.
Loves loves a kiddy pool/ watering tub to splash in.

Behaviours that need work: Is a chewer if left out of his crate unmonitored.
Jake has herding behaviours/prey drive which are being worked on and it’s gotten better but he needs to be kept separate from small animals, or needs an experienced handler/trainer to teach him to leave small animals alone.

Ideal home: An active single or couple would be ideal for Jake. He would be fine either living with other dogs or being an only dog. He entertains himself well when alone. No small crazy dogs, cats, or other small pets. No small children. Patient, calm adults with dog experience who will patiently socialize and train him.
Jake is very much a shepherd in a lab body, so people with shepherd experience would be ideal.

Rescue story: Jake and his 4 siblings were born to a momma who was an outside dog. Mom and pups were kept in an outdoor kennel. Their owner went to jail when they were very young. The neighbours took it upon themselves to look after the dogs – feeding and water, cleaning the kennel and improving shelter from storms and tornadoes, leash training, and looked for a rescue to take them before the owner got out of jail in July - because who knows what would happen to them then. That’s when we stepped in, just in time too before a hurricane hit.

It may seem far removed from the PNW/BC, but Hurrican Beryl is hitting our partners in Texas hard. Stay safe Texas friends 🙏

We are really worried about the stray dogs, especially some we were hoping to rescue from the "Corridor of Cruelty" when our dogs in foster in B.C. get adopted. Strays tend to gather around water sources, which flood during bad storms. Not to mention how scary and dangerous it is for them to be in the wind and rain with debris blowing around :(

We are SO glad we got the puppies out of Texas in early June, who were living outdoors. Cindy, Suzanne, Darla, Bernie and Jake are looking for their forever homes.
If you're thinking of adopting, now is the time. We need foster space in B.C. to rescue the strays if they survive the storm🙏 They are right in it's path 😭 Especially Texanne (click on her photo for details of her sad situation)
She needs a foster in Texas until transport, and a foster/adopter in the PNW
Video of her and her buddies (two males) in the comments.

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION *** Being fostered in Victoria but can be transported within BC. Adopters south of the border may pick up just north of the border.

Bernie is a very sweet & shy 9 month old male, handsome brindle, about 70 lb. His mom looks lab mix and weighs 60 lb. His dad is a neighbourhood brindle Dutch Shepherd we think.

Behaviour: Super sweet, shy, gentle and affectionate. Loves to be with you and follows his foster mom around. He is curious and clever. And a bit clumsy Needs to be introduced to new people thoughtfully. Quiet in the home, only barks occasionally if he hears neighbours’ dogs barking. Not a begger (hasn't been spoiled by people food) and not resource protective. Bernie is happy to share everything - kibble, toys and beds
Bernie will be a very loyal, gentle companion for his new family.

Rescue story: Bernie and his 4 siblings were born to a momma who was an outside dog. That’s when we stepped in.

Good with dogs: Bernie could be happy living without a dog if he had a full time person, and just have dog friends. He does best with playful dogs.

Good with cats: Bernie was tested with a cat through a wire fence and was good, but that was his first and only cat meeting. Would need to be trained with a dog-savvy cat.

Good with kids: Bernie has been around a 9 yr old girl and was fine. We expect he’ll be fine living with 9+ calm children. He is very affectionate, but lanky and clumsy so could knock a little person over

Housetrained: Yes

Training: Bernie had leash training in Texas and is fine on leash. Responds to his name when called. He is learning Sit. He needs to be settled and relaxed to be able to focus on learning commands. Very treat motivated, which helps with training.

Crate trained: Good in crate. Sleeps thru the night in his crate. Rests in the crate for up to up to 4 hours when his foster is at work.

Car rides: Enjoys car rides (once he is in the car!)

Behaviours that need work: Bernie is still figuring out life in a home. He used to counter surf a lot but is getting much better (see video in comments). He sometimes chews things he shouldn’t so needs to be redirected to an allowed chew toy, and crated when not monitored. Is learning to Sit to get attention instead of jumping up on his people.

Ideal home: Patient adults with dog experience who will patiently socialize and train him. He doesn’t seem to need to live with a dog, though would love a few good doggie friends.
Children 9+ and dog savvy.
Bernie and his siblings are scared by sudden movements, we think they were hit by their previous owner, so no young children is best.
As with any dog who lacks confidence, Bernie needs his people to be his leaders and protectors, and provide clear rules and boundaries so that he can relax and enjoy life. He needs to be introduced to new people thoughtfully.
5’ fence ideally

If you plan on taking your dog across the border (Canada to U.S.) after Aug 1, you are in for a world of hurt with the new restrictions imposed by the U.S.

To avoid this, you can get your dog microchipped now and take it across to border for rabies vaccine and certificate BEFORE Aug 1. It will then have a rabies certificate issued by a U.S. vet, which will avoid the hassle. Make sure the certificate includes the microchip # (double check it the number is printed correctly) and is signed by the U.S. vet.
Tonasket Vet is the logical choice in WA for those living in the Okanagan, and there are numerous vets in western WA. Book an appointment beforehand of course.

Otherwise, this is what you will need to do to bring your dog across the border after Aug 1 (copied from email from my veterinarian).
Ugh...

CDC Dog Import Form ( Form not available till July 15 2024)

How long are the forms valid for?

The Certification of Dog Arriving from DMRVV-free or Low-Risk Country into the United States form is valid for (1) a single entry for 30 days after the form was issued if it does not contain information about rabies vaccination administered in a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, OR (2) multiple entries into the US for the duration the rabies vaccination is valid (1 or 3 years) if it contains information about rabies vaccination administered in a dog rabies free or low-risk country.
The CDC Dog Import Form has to be completed for each trip; this takes less than 5 minutes and is free.

How often does a dog need to be vaccinated against rabies to meet U.S. entry requirements? How long after being vaccinated are they eligible to enter the United States?

Vaccines will be considered valid for a period of 1 or 3 years depending on manufacturer guidelines.
Dog(s) must receive their initial (first) rabies vaccine at least 28 days prior to entering the United States. Booster vaccines are considered immediately valid in dogs over 15 months of age provided the dog has received at least 1 previous rabies vaccine administered on or after 12 weeks of age and there has been no lapse in vaccine coverage. Booster vaccines must be administered according to recognized U.S. vaccine schedules (i.e., administered every 1 or 3 years) and comply with manufacturer’s instructions.

Darla is an 8 mo old black female lab(?) mix, 52 lb. She looks much like her momma, who weighs 60 lb. Here dad is a Dutch Shepherd.

Behaviour: Sweet and shy with new people, very affectionate once she knows you. New people need to be introduced thoughtfully. She especially loves women.
From her foster, who is also fostering Bernie “Darla and Bernie are affectionate, curious and clever and will make their future adoptive parents very happy. They are learning so much and conquering their fears of new people and situations.”
Darla is not a begger (hasn't been spoiled by people food) and is not resource protective. She is happy to share everything - kibble, toys and beds

Good with dogs: Darla likes other dogs, though needs slow introductions as she grew up with only her siblings and mom around. It took her 10 days to settle in to her foster home and now she is good friends with her foster’s female the same age.

Cats: Unknown

Children: Good with dog-savvy, calm children. Darla met a 7 yr old girl and was very sweet and gentle (see video in comments).

Housetrained: Yes

Training: Great on a leash. Comes when called. Darla is still figuring out life in a home, so training has just started. She knows Sit and Lie Down. Very treat motivated, which will help with training.
She is quiet. She is learning that she is only allowed to chew her toys.
Crate trained: Good in crate, sleeps through the night.
Great in cars

Behaviours that need work: Jumps up on people she knows. Needs to learn that Sit gets attention instead. Needs more socialization. Counter surfs, which is being worked on.

Ideal home: Patient adults and children with dog experience who will patiently socialize her. Ideally another playful dog.
Darla and her siblings are scared by sudden movements, we think they were hit by their previous owner, so no young children is best.
As with any shy dog, Darla needs her people to be her leaders and protectors, and have clear rules and boundaries so that she can relax.

Rescue story: Darla and her 4 siblings were born to a momma who was an outside dog.

More photos and videos are in the comments below (change Most Relevant to All Comments). She is being fostered with Bernie who is also available for adoption.

All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, microchipped, and dewormed. Darla is heartworm negative.

Forever homes for abandoned family dogs

Texas has a dog problem, or to be more accurate - a dog owner problem. Many people don't spay/neuter their pets. Many don't use preventatives for heartworm, ticks and fleas. But worst of all is the attitude that dogs are disposable. The cute puppy that people can't bother to train chews a shoe and gets driven to the end of a country lane and dumped. There are estimated to be over 300,000 stray dogs in Houston alone. Pounds have a mandate to euthanize when full. Strays often only get a 3 day hold. Owner surrenders have no hold. Occasionally a caring person rescues a stray, takes it to the vet and cares for it in their home until they find the dog a forever home. We help those people find adopters in British Columbia or Washington state.
