Helping Paws - Okanagan, Canada We facilitate adoption in B.C., WA, and OR of dogs abandoned in Texas. A small volunteer-run foster based rescue, we rely on donations to help dogs in need.

Etransfer / paypal to [email protected] Texas has a dog problem, or to be more accurate - a dog owner problem. Many people don't spay/neuter their pets. Many don't use preventatives for heartworm, ticks and fleas. But worst of all is the attitude that dogs are disposable. The cute puppy whose owner didn't bother to train chews a shoe and gets driven to the end of a country lane and du

mped. There are estimated to be over 500,000 stray dogs in Houston alone. Pounds have a mandate to euthanize when full. Strays often only get a 3 day hold. Owner surrenders have no hold before eu. Helping Paws - Okanagan works with volunteers in southern Texas who network dogs in pounds to find adopters or rescues to save them. These volunteers are very good at assessing dogs' demeanours and we trust their judgement. Usually that is all we know about a dog when we decide to rescue it. We pull dogs from the pounds often not knowing whether they have heartworm or other diseases until they are seen by a veterinarian. Unexpected medical treatments, and boarding because of a shortage of fosters, makes rescuing Texas dogs an expensive proposition. The alternative for these dogs doesn't bear thinking about. Occasionally a caring person rescues a stray, and cares for it in their home until a forever home is found for the dog. We vet those dogs and find adopters in British Columbia, Washington or Oregon states. Street feeders (street angels) feed strays and make posts of dogs on their feeding route. Occasionally we rescue some of these, usually needing donations for the extra medical care for broken legs, mange, wounds, and boarding to get them safe immediately. The dogs you see on this page are some of the lucky few that were rescued and will get out of Texas, and make the 2400 mile journey to their furever home. We appreciate you opening your home to them, and they will too. We do not have a local facility. The dogs arrive directly to their adopters or to foster homes. Donations are very much appreciated. A true story, from the friend in Houston who fostered Bindi before we brought her to B.C.
Please share, as it highlights the value of microchipping your pets.

Background... Shabeen had been trying to capture a little scruffy dog, one of the million strays in Houston. When he eventually captured the little (that he named Mango), Mango was with another dog. This story is about that other dog. Mango's capture is a story itself that you can read on Shabeen's page.

Update Feb 1: Snow has started putting weight on her leg. Yay!

Update Jan 29: Snow isn't using her leg yet. She needs water therapy. (see video in comments, change from Most relevant to Newest).
If you can spare even $5 that will add up to the therapy that Snow needs. 💰🙏 ❤

Snow had her surgery yesterday by Dr. Brady Hanson, one of the best there is. 🧑‍⚕️ Because her FHO surgery was performed due to a leg fracture and not due to a hip displacement, the surgery and rehab are more complicated than with a regular FHO surgery.
Dr. Hanson highly recommends that water therapy be done for Snow's best outcome. We hadn't budgeted for that 😯

Snow looks rough but is eating and drinking well, and being assisted by a sling to avoid weight bearing for the first few days. She was wagging her tail this morning. The tissue on her head that was not healing was removed. Her wonderful foster Trina is doing massage and gentle stretches, ice packs, short slow non-weight-bearing walks assisted by a sling, and rest/pain management. 🦮

In two weeks, more intense rehab will start including walking backwards and rotation of the hip.
Water therapy also as Dr Hanson recommended, if we can raise funds for it.
The physiotherapist exam cost is $185 and each water therapy session afterwards $75 USD. We are hoping to get Snow several therapy sessions.

If you can spare even $5 that will add up to the therapy that Snow needs. 💰🙏 ❤

Snow has recovered from her heartworm injection treatment ❤.
Now the poor girl has surgery on Jan 7 for her injured leg and bump on her head, from being hit by a car.
We are still short $130 USD for her leg surgery, and don't know how much the head wound will cost. Hopefully it is not serious. 🙏

Donations much appreciated! etransfer or paypal to [email protected] (paypal Friends & Family please so the rescue doesn't get charged paypals 5% fee)

This is an update on Benji (previously Bernie) ❤ and also a reminder that his sweet sisters Darla and Suzanne are still available for adoption. They would love their very own families for Christmas. 🎄🎁🎅❤
Benji's other siblings Sadie (Cindy) and Fisher (Jake) are doing great with their loving families.

All these pups needed was calm leadership, consistency, and patient slow socialization. ❤❤

Benji has come a long way thanks to his fosters, trainers and his adopter. Like his siblings, he used to be very scared of men and life in general. Having a new confident fur sibling has helped Benji a lot also.

“Benji now greets my 23 yr old male lodger with tail wags, and no longer reacts when he hears/sees him moving around in the house.
He is doing extremely well with loose leash walking and focusing on me, sitting any time we stop. (I am doing better at not tensing up!). Our trainer is really impressed with how far Benji has come in a month.
We're currently working on a down stay - I do this while I hide treats round the house.
Yesterday we expanded our town walk into new territory, and while nervous, he did remarkably well. 4 deer - looked curiously and carried on.
A loose dog came up behind us, Benji swiveled around, wagged his tail and wanted to play. The dog was not friendly, and without much difficulty I was able to turn him around and carry on!
He definitely gains confidence from Ellie.
His personality is beginning to show. I don't give him his full breakfast until Ellie is up - she likes to sleep in! For the past 2 mornings he has repeatedly run upstairs, lies beside her bed, and "waps" her with his paws, in an attempt to get her up!!
He does not resource guard at all, though he will try and sn**ch toys from Ellie, lie on them and keep his! I tell him "no, it's Ellie's turn" and he looks at me, wags his tail and lets me take it.
Ever the opportunist!
He does try to push boundaries at times, and much like a belligerent teenager, has "argued" with me a couple of times, when I've asked him to get out of my face so I can give Ellie some attention. (He woofs and tries to take my hand) - I stand up tall, fold my arms and ask him to lie down. He grumbles, then rolls over.
He is still fearful of anything new, Christmas lawn decorations, the dark (not wanting to go outside). He takes redirection well.
Over all I believe we're on the right track and he's a great dog.”

Update Dec 13: Thank you for your generous donations. We have booked Snow for surgery on Jan 6. We are still short on 💲 but wanted to get her scheduled.
Snow has a bump on her head that is not healing, that she had when she arrived at the pound 3 months ago :( We now suspect that something is embedded from when she was hit by a car, that will require surgery to remove.
Hopefully it's nothing serious 🙏

💲$500 USD is still needed: $130 more for Snow's leg surgery, and we're budgeting $370 for her head injury 💲

🛟🛟 IF EVERYONE WHO SEES THIS POSTING CAN PLEASE DONATE JUST $5 — WE COULD COLLECTIVELY SAVE SNOW’S LEG!!! WE HAVE RAISED $1870 USD so far of THE $2000 USD SURGERY COST
🆘❤️‍🩹 🆘 SNOW MUST HAVE SURGERY to SAVE HER LEG!! 🙏🙏

Beautiful Snow was hit by a car at some point before arriving at the pound. Her pelvis and left femur were fractured and she requires surgery to recover. The way she is compensating for the injury is going to damage her spine if she doesn’t get surgery soon. She can't put weight on her hind left leg and the doctor has recommended an FHO.
** See video in first comment

The estimated cost of the surgery is $2800 CAD ($2,000 USD).

Paws - Okanagan, Canada is run by one person with help from wonderful volunteers. The founder absolutely cannot afford to cover Snow's FHO surgery personally :( The rescue agreed to help Snow but can't without funding.
Snow will not be able to come to Canada until she has had this surgery, as FHO surgery here costs more than twice as much as in Texas. 😭

❤️‍🩹🙏❤️‍🩹 ANY AMOUNT YOU COULD DONATE TOWARD SNOW’S SURGERY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! 🙏🙏 No amount is too small — it all adds up and will help get us closer to being able to schedule her procedure.

Please etransfer or PayPal to [email protected]
(for PayPal, please send USD funds and select Friends and Family so the rescue isn't charged a 4% fee)

Please share to help raise funds to get Snow the surgery she needs!! 🙏🙏

Darla is still available and would love to experience her first Canadian Christmas in her own furever home. 🎅🎄⛄️🎁

Click on her photo below for her full profile (click 'See more') with videos and more photos in the comments (change 'Most relevant' to 'All comments')

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION *** Being fostered in Campbell River.

Darla is a 14 mo old black female lab mix, about 60 lb. She looks much like her momma who is a lab mix. Her dad may be a neighbourhood Dutch Shepherd.

Behaviour: Very affectionate once she knows you, especially with women. She is nervous of new people but getting much better. New people need to be introduced slowly and respect her space, ignore her and not look at her, let her come and sniff them, offer a treat, and wait until she asks for affection before petting her. Once she knows you she bonds quickly and is very affectionate and sweet.
Interestingly, she has not been afraid of the men she has met and has done well with them.
See video in comments taken just after Darla met the man who lives next door (no look no touch then, she went and licked his leg). Her foster gave him Darla’s lead and she was fine going with him.
Darla is curious and clever. She is learning so much and conquering her fears of new people and situations.
Darla is quiet, rarely barks.

Other dogs: Darla likes other dogs, though needs slow introductions as she grew up with only her siblings and mom around. She is getting used to seeing other dogs on walks. It took her 10 days to settle in to her first foster home and become good friends with the foster’s female the same age. With her current foster it only took 2 days to become fast friends with her female Great Dane.
Darla would do great as an only dog or with a dog-savvy older but playful mentor dog.

Cats: May be ok with cats but would take time. She started out very respectful of her foster’s cat, but now wants to chase it. If the cat growls or hisses Darla backs off.

Children: Would need dog-savvy, calm older children who avoid quick hand movements. Darla met a 7 yr old girl and was very sweet and gentle (see video in comments).

Housetrained: Yes. Goes to the door when she needs to potty. Would be helpful to train her to ring a string of bells because otherwise you don’t know she is waiting to be let out. She was shown where to p**p and goes there EVERY time.

Training: Working on leash training. A Halti works well on her.
Comes when called. Darla knows Sit and Lie Down. Very treat motivated, which helps with training.

Crate trained: Good in crate, sleeps in her crate through the night. Not allowed to rush out of crate, if tries to I close the door. As long as she’s calm she can come out. Covers crate except one side. At night covers completely. She’s fine with going into crate. Leaves door open and she goes in.
“When I go out I crate her. She’s never chewed anything but she takes stuff and puts in her bed. “

Great in cars, loves to put her head out the window.
Sits when she comes into the house to have her paws wiped.
Darla’s foster free feeds the dogs to eliminate resource guarding and it has worked beautifully.

Behaviours that need work: Jumps up on people she knows but this has improved a lot with training. Needs to learn that Sit gets attention instead. Counter surfs but this is also getting much better with training. Tends to guard her person if not corrected. We think she may not do this with a male owner. Could be more pronounced if she had a child to guard. Her foster has practiced hugging in front of Darla. She doesn’t like it much but isn’t aggressive. Needs more socialization to counter the protective shepherd gene.

Ideal home: Patient adults, older children with dog experience who will patiently socialize her. Ideally another playful dog.
Darla and her siblings are scared by sudden movements, we think they were hit by their previous owner, so no young children is best.
As with any shy dog, Darla needs her people to be her leaders and protectors, and have clear rules and boundaries so that she can relax.
Darla would gain confidence from a dog sport such as agility where the dog and handler are a team. She LOVES to run and is fast!

Rescue story: Darla and her 4 siblings were born to a momma who was an outside dog. Mom and pups were kept in an outdoor kennel. Their owner went to jail when they were very young. The neighbours took it upon themselves to look after the dogs – feeding and water, cleaning the kennel and improving shelter from storms and tornadoes, leash training, and looked for a rescue to take them before the owner got out of jail in July - because who knows what would happen to them then. That’s when we stepped in.

Another reputable rescue closes its doors :(
This is happening worldwide. Mostly due to the sheer volume of dogs being dumped and rehomed by people who bought from backyard breeders during covid (byb's have no long-term commitment to the dog and will sell to anyone with a pulse).
Because so many dogs are being rehomed, Rescues aren't able to find adopters for rescued dogs, so the costs of fostering their rescued dogs for months and months adds up.
At a time when donations are down.
At a certain point Rescues can't keep their doors open financially or emotionally.

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION ***

Sweet Hamish - From Truck Yard Stray to Handsome Hunk!

We are very pleased to present our lovely Hamish to you. You may remember how he looked just a few short months back when he was found in a semi truck yard, starving and with barely any hair. Now, with vet care and a good diet, it's his time to shine!

Hamish is between 2 and 4 years old, and his breed is unknown but he's likely a Border Collie mix. He's about 60 pounds

From His Foster:
"Hamish's personality is very low key, however, if you really take the time to get to know him, his eyes speak volumes of what he's feeling and trying to convey to you. He's a true sweetheart. He's very laid back, but does this quick little skip, stops and looks right through to your heart, telling you that he's happy, feeling great and very grateful to you.

"I didn't know whether I could trust him at first without a leash, but then I noticed he never strayed far and came right back to me when I called for him. He would then walk right up to me and rest his head on my lap or hands."

Behaviour:
Hamish has a very gentle, laid back nature. He has a sassy side, being much younger than we originally thought, and is still learning how to live life as a well-kept dog, after living on the streets. He has a regal way of walking, and he's very affectionate. He loves to lean against you, loves to be brushed, and he will communicate when he wants something (mealtime!).
Hamish is feeling much better as his health has returned. He has more energy, more smiles, more tail wagging AND MORE MISCHIEVOUS DEEDS! He throws the pillows off his foster's bed and surfs countertops. ;) So will need basic manners training.
He's still figuring out how to join a group of dogs when everybody is playing, and how to play with toys.
"Hamish will do very well with teenagers.
He's still trying to figure out the best way to interact with people. For the very first time last night, he excitedly brought me a toy when I walked in the door after doing errands.
Hamish is hesitant if I've got something large in my hands and if I'm scolding another dog. He's very sensitive to any verbal scolding, but he's generally ok with any loud noises not directed at him.
To clarify, if we're watching a game and yell in an excited tone, he's not scared, because he knows that we're not mad at him."

Good with Dogs: Hamish is great with other dogs and would do well with an adopter who already has a dog. "Hamish is super sweet and never start fights and would rather walk away. "

Cats?: The verdict is still out. He has been around his foster's cat a fair bit. He's friendly and greets the cat warmly, but he chases if the cat runs. This is something we believe could be worked on successfully with dog-savvy cats.

Good with Kids: Hamish is great around children. His calm, easy demeanor and gentle spirit makes him a great companion for children. (see video in comments)

House Trained/Crate Trained: Hamish is crate trained and house trained. He does his bathroom duties when let outside and is eager to come back in with you when he's finished.

Good in Car? Unknown

Leash and off-leash walking: 'Perfect on a leash. I frequently take small groups of dogs, including Hamish, for walks without leashes on my property. He usually stays within 5 feet of me and will quickly come back to me when called. He's seen squirrels and doesn't run off, even though some of the dogs will chase them about 100 feet or so.'

Ideal Home: Hamish would be great in most home situations. He'd be great as the center of attention with a couple, or equally happy as a second dog or with a family.

Health:
Hamish had mange when he was first rescued, which has mostly cleared up now - revealing beautiful red-brown fur. Hamish has teeth that are worn in the front, we think from chewing a chain-link enclosure ...but as you can see, it hasn't affected his gorgeous smile!
He had heartworm and has had injection treatment. He will need to be tested again in 6 months and remain on heartworm preventative for a year. He will need to be kept calm, with easy exercise, for a few months while he continues to recover from his heartworm treatment. This required follow-up care will be detailed in his adoption contract.

All our dogs are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and dewormed.

To apply: 1) email us for an Adoption Application form and

*** ADOPTED *** Due to family health issues Daisy needed to be rehomed. We received no applications so the SPCA, who has more followers, found her a loving home.

Daisy is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix, about 1.5 yrs old, 37 pounds.
Currently in Summerland

Behavior: Sweet girl especially one on one, loves people and attention, loves to snuggle. Gets excited when people first come in to visit, then calms down. Daisy is a busy girl who needs mental stimulation and exercise. Loves her chewy toys and parents’ attention.

Energy level: Medium/High. Loves zoomies in the yard, morning walks, evening too if possible. Tends to flop exhausted for several naps during the day.

Other dogs: Daisy tends to start off playful but gets too excited and needs to have play stopped to calm her down. Her behaviour indicates she was taken from her siblings and mom too early in life and didn’t get the corrections that teach appropriate dog-to-dog behaviour. She would benefit greatly from a leader (person or adult dog) who will teach her dog-to-dog social skills.
She takes correction from her family’s older female dog very well, so we know she can learn appropriate behaviour. She is best not living currently with other dogs, and instead have monitored doggie play dates with a well-matched dog that she knows.

Cats: Unknown

Children: Daisy loves children but because she is still too excitable, she should not yet live with them. She's good with kids visiting, but should be monitored and excitement de-escalated as needed (send to crate).

House trained: Yes. Daisy sits at the door to ask.

Training: Sits, comes when called, goes to bed when asked. Walks well on a leash. Starts off with a bit of a pull but corrects well, then falls into an easy gait as she tires. When wrestling with her fur brother, she will sit when told to stop.

Crate trained: Daisy has an octogen open kennel containing her bed. She chooses it when she's tired, as her sanctuary. She sleeps well overnight in it, and if she needs to p*e, she talks and let's you know. Then she settles back easily. When her family leaves the house she is kenneled after some exercise.

Good in the car, loves rides! Is quiet and curious to watch traffic. No sickness at all.

Behaviors that need work: What Daisy mostly needs is calm, confident leadership. She needs correction for inappropriate behaviour and praise for good behaviour, and especially praise for being calm.
She is in the teenage mouthy destructive phase, so requires training as to what she can and cannot chew. She can be toy possessive, so best kept separate from other dogs when she has a toy until she learns appropriate social skills.
Daisy requires a secure yard, as her energy could take her on adventures when she is not being monitored 😉

Ideal home: Single or couple with no children and ideally breed-specific experience. Natural leader type people who will set and enforce rules and boundaries. Ideally she should be the only dog, or with an older dog who will correct her - as dog-to-dog corrections are usually more effective than human corrections.

Rescue story: Daisy was in a pound in Texas, at risk of euthanasia. She had been picked up stray at about 9 months old and was extremely underweight. A kind couple in B.C. offered to adopt her to get her safe. She has been with them for 4 months, however family health issues combined with the needs of a high energy teenage dog are proving too much for the family.

Luna (previously Bruna) is a globe trotter! We rescued her from Texas in 2022 and she was adopted in B.C. Recently, her mom and her did a road trip across Canada to the East coast from where they flew to their new home in England!
It wasn't easy or inexpensive to bring Luna to the UK, but her mom loves her and wouldn't dream of leaving her behind ❤
Luna is loving the Worcestershire countryside where she can be off leash more, and the pubs and cafes (the UK is much more dog friendly than B.C.)

Forever homes for abandoned family dogs

Texas has a dog problem, or to be more accurate - a dog owner problem. Many people don't spay/neuter their pets. Many don't use preventatives for heartworm, ticks and fleas. But worst of all is the attitude that dogs are disposable. The cute puppy that people can't bother to train chews a shoe and gets driven to the end of a country lane and dumped. There are estimated to be over 300,000 stray dogs in Houston alone. Pounds have a mandate to euthanize when full. Strays often only get a 3 day hold. Owner surrenders have no hold. Occasionally a caring person rescues a stray, takes it to the vet and cares for it in their home until they find the dog a forever home. We help those people find adopters in British Columbia or Washington state. Paypal using gift/friend option to [email protected] or etransfer to [email protected] Thank you Lesley Chapman, Founder of Helping Paws - Okanagan
