A new life will soon start for some Greek cats but we need to find a flight for them !

The Kalymnos Cat Project is looking for a flight escorts ✈️ for cats from Kalymnos or Kos to Zurich, preferably on the Condor flight on 9 September 2024. Alternative dates or flights to Munich would also be an option 🙏

📁 2023 end of year report : 888 cats sterilized 👏🏻

📍including 56 cats in VOTHINOI !

Vothinoi is a residential area very spread out with many small colonies. There are a few people who feed the cats and this year we’ve started organising so we can be as efficient as possible. Like so many places where cats are fed, many people abandon kittens so there are always new cats to be neutered.

The Kalymnos Cat Project is still ongoing in 2024 !

[ KITTENS NEED YOUR HELP ]

✈️ If you travel to Kalymnos before October and want to adopt a kitten, let us know !

25 kittens were abandoned lately either in rubbish bins or in boxes 📦 next to feeding stations 🤮
And they need to find a forever home !
➡️ We can help with the procedure to take them with you abroad, but of course we’ll need donations 💰 to pay the vet, the food…

Today, we are so sad… People do not sterilize their cats, and OUR VOLUNTEERS have to deal with all this misery 😭

We really need to find a solution for the 25 kittens, because on the island we have some very nice volunteers who take care of them during the summer ☀️, but they leave the island at the end of the summer and what will happen to these kittens ? They will have to be put back on the streets (sterilized first, of course) 😭
We hope we can offer them a better life 🤞🏼🍀

☎️ Send us a private message with your phone number and/or email address if you want to help us 🙏🏼

We are pleased to announce that we will be partnering once again with Kalymnos Cat Project to provide urgent support.

Any donations made this month will be doubled and will go towards supporting the Kalymnos Cat project.

🐾 Amazing News! 🐾

Sweetheart Bijou fought her way back home 😻😻🙏🏼🙏🏼 ! After receiving life-saving surgery followed by a 30 hours treatment in the oxygen box, Bijou has made an almost miraculous recovery and now is reunited with her loving family. Kalymnian cats 🐈 🐈‍⬛ are just incredible!!!

However, the costs of Bijou’s treatment have put a strain on her family’s finances. Every donation, no matter the size, will help alleviate the burden and keep Bijou purring and her family smiling.

➡️ If you want to help Bijou and her Kalymnian stray cat friends, please consider donating 🙏🏼 : https://donorbox.org/kalymnos-cat-project (you can put in the comment that your donation is for Bijou). Please also share this post to spread the love and support.

🐾 Sweetheart Bijou’s health condition required immediate action - therefore she was brought to an animal clinic in Athens. She travelled by ferry ⛴️ and already had her surgery.

The surgery as such was successful. However, it turned out that her lung was affected and that the little girl was literally breathing with only one lung 😢. Therefore, she now receives oxygen treatments, she is incredibly brave 😻.

Your good wishes mean the world to us as we hope for a speedy recovery for sweet little Bijou🍀🤞

This sweet little girl called Bijou 😻 was captured at Vouvali Beach to be sterilized.

Sadly, during the surgery, it has been found that she is suffering from a diaphragm rupture caused by a previous trauma such as a car accident 😢.
Luckily, one of the volunteers who captured her to be sterilized is willing to take care of her and to give her a loving foreverhome 🏠🙏🏼.

However, immediate surgery in a special animal clinic in Athens is needed to save her life 😢🤞🏼….

Including 35 cats neutered in Therma/Gefira 📍

This is a well-known area by the water 🏖️ that supports 3 neutered and monitored colonies.

Unfortunately, it’s also one of the places people come to abandon kittens so there are always new cats to pass through our TNR program 😫.

On the pictures, we can see that the cats are very interested in the traps! Some of them were friendly enough to get a cuddle 🤗
And also there is this poor young, abandoned female that was huddled up against a tree to get out of the wind. The life of stray cats is far from being easy… 😢

➡️ Please consider making monthly donation, even if 5€ per month. It helps a lot, for sterilizations and also for feeding the neutered colonies : https://donorbox.org/kalymnos-cat-project

📁 2023 end of year report : 888 cats sterilized 👏🏻

Including 102 cats neutered in Flaska !

Flaska 📍 is a densely populated area between Pothia and Chora. 102 cats have been neutered in this neighborhood and there are a couple of
large, monitored colonies but many smaller, unmonitored ones.

Little story about this place :
Two tiny, sick kittens at rubbish bin, Leslie saw these on her way to the vet one day in Flaska.
The next day the kitten was in the middle of the road 🙀, Leslie brought it back to the bin, the mother was hiding behind a gate near the bin.

➡️ Leslie had a plan. She put the kittens in a cage and set up a trap to capture the mother and father cats to have them sterilized. The kittens were brought to a foster home where they were treated for parasites and cat flu 🤧. It was a miracle we found someone to take them in. 🙏🏼

And mother and father cats were finally trapped, neutered and released 👏🏻

Look at this sterilized cat who wants to go to the vet again 😹

The volunteers were in Plati Gialos, where they managed to trap and sterilize 32 cats 👏🏻

But this girl was going into all the cages to eat the food put in place to trap her non sterilized friends ! So we had to put her temporarily in a cage, so that we can do our job 😁

And even after we released her, she was trapped a second time 😹
She was showing the way to his friends !

Now it is time to clean all the cages and traps 🧼. We have 27 white professional cages, 14 traps and more than 40 plastic cages, so it takes a lot of time to sanitize everything !

We still have a lot of pictures and videos to share with you about this exhausting week ! So stay tuned 😉

🎥 Live with Leslie in Greece 🎥

A little summarise of the three days where it all happened! (16th to 18th February)

➡️ Saturday: Leslie started her day at 06:45 and finished at 22:00... 😳
33 cats were at the vet for sterilisations and treatments, coming from Kamari and Masouri 📍
Unfortunately, that day, the car Leslie had purchased locally to carry out the sterilisation campaigns broke down!!! Thank Heaven, she got rescued but had to return to the garage on a scooter. We kid you not....
We can only salute her courage and determination 😁
We're counting on your generosity 🙏 as she now will need financial support not only to repair the car but also to fund the rental car she had to take in the meantime. On top of the usual expenses. 😨
Apart from the car incident, the trapping went well.

➡️ Sunday: Leslie went to Pothia 📍. In the evening, she had an appointment at 22:30 to trap 8/9 cats. 😨
18 cats were also captured in Panormos over the weekend.

💡 DID YOU KNOW?
In addition to English, French, and Italian, Leslie also speaks Greek, and that became very useful on Sunday as she had an appointment with someone who only spoke Greek. Victory, she managed to communicate (phew). 👏🏻

More pictures and videos to come… 👍🏻

📍 TNR in Kamari, Kalymnos

There are several steps to follow :
- Reconnaissance mission to check if there are some unsterilized cats, and if yes, how many 🐱
- Put the traps with food inside for the cats to get used to eat in the traps and not be afraid !
- And then… trap the unsterilized cats and not the sterilized ones 🤪

Already more than 100 cats sterilized in less than a week by Leslie and her team 😻

Leslie’s journey - Day 2️⃣

Yesterday, we made our first post introducing Leslie's new journey to the island of Kalymnos as part of the Kalymnos Cat Project. 🙏🏼

Leslie began her tour of the island today by collecting food donations 🍗 that will allow for the feeding of hundreds of free-roaming cats.

It takes about 100kg of dry food per week to feed the cats of Kalymnos and Telendos. 🙀

In the fall of 2023, Tierheim Tierfutter donated 660 kg and Pets Nature 1200kg. Tierheim Tierfutter has just donated another 1300 kg. 🙏🏼😻
Recently, Leslie made another call for help as the dry food stocks are empty, and Themelis delivered 100kg. We take this opportunity in this post to thank everyone. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Despite the generosity of the companies, the free-roaming cats do not always have enough to eat, they need constant support. 🙁
➡️ If you would like to help the cats of Kalymnos, you can make a donation by clicking on the following link: https://donorbox.org/kalymnos-cat-project.

📌 Leslie also met with the Deputy Mayor of Pothia today and on her way there, she came across a colony of unsterilised cats that were scratching a lot and had raw skin.
After investigating, she was able to meet the woman who feeds them, who was not in a state to communicate and categorically refuses to have the cats sterilised and treated 😵‍💫. There is still a lot of work to be done on-site to change mentalities, which is also the role Leslie has taken on, and she certainly has a lot of courage and guts!

🎥 Live with Leslie in Greece! 🎥

Leslie, president of Les Chats du Mercantour, is back on Kalymnos, a Greek island 🇬🇷🏝️ where she’s been aiding the stray cat population for the several years.

Her mission here is to sterilise the local stray cats, and get them medical care when necessary 👩🏼‍⚕️. She is also working to educate locals in order to improve living conditions of these cats.

Why Kalymnos ❓
During a vacation on the island, Leslie discovered a catastrophic situation where hundreds - even thousands - of stray cats were reproducing and fighting for survival 🙁. Her years of experience meant she just couldn’t ignore the situation, so she requested aid from international organisations and has brought her knowledge to the local population.
Around twice a year she travels to Kalymnos,, spending 2 weeks criss-crossing the island to come in aid to the stray cats. Thanks to these massive efforts, 1734 cats have been sterilised and treated. 😻👏🏻

The Kalymnos Cat Project is run by Les Chats du Mercantour, but is entirely financed by private donors wishing to help, and especially by international organisations 💸.

➡️ We’d like to give special thanks the Fondation Brigitte Bardot, who has supported our cause from the very beginning, allowing our association to get its start. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
https://www.fondationbrigittebardot.fr

➡️ Today, Leslie has arrived on the island and we’ll follow her adventures right along with her !

Even though Leslie has only just arrived, she’s already met many cats… including one begging for food near a restaurant! Of course, Leslie shared her fish with him! 😹🐠

We’d love if you could donate and support our cause ! Leslie and the Greek cats need your help ! 🚨

📁 2023 end of year report : 888 cats sterilized 👏🏻

Including 123 cats neutered in CHORA !

📍 Chora is the oldest, poorest and most authentic part of Kalymnos.

This village is quite large and spread out, 123 cats have been neutered throughout the town, it’s very hard to control this area as there is a large human population and many rubbish bins where the cats come to eat 🗑️🍗.

There are a few older Greek women who leave food at the rubbish bins and they would like to see the cats sterilised but as of yet, it’s been difficult to organise.

The Kalymnos Cat Project and its volunteers are ready to continue the work for 2024 !

Let’s encourage our volunteers team 👏🏻👏🏻

Leslie, the president of the Kalymnos Cat Project is going to Kalymnos mid February for an INTENSE week of TNR 😻

With the volunteers there, they plan to neuter 180 cats 🐱

After their sterilisation, the feral cats are returned to their territory. Studies have shown that not only do they not have more kittens, but with their presence deter other non sterilised cats from coming to their area.
They help control the feline population and also keep the area free of RATS 🐀, MICE 🐭, COCKROACHES 🪳, SNAKES 🐍 etc.

So even if you don’t like cats, the sterilised ones with the clipped ear ensure that life in the neighbourhood is better for everyone. 😻😻
