Canine Enrichment!
It comes in many forms from a long walk with lots of sniffing, a snuffle mat, treats hidden around the house or yard, food puzzles or even yourself (ever played hide and seek with your dog where when they find you they get the treat?!). There are many ways which you can help keep your puppy occupied during these times of lockdown. Feel free to share below any ideas you may have!

Can your dog talk?

Have you ever wished your dog could talk? I sure do… I am positive they would tell me I talk far too much! What if I said your dog can “talk”, not using words but using their body language. Take a look at the wonderfully illustrated pictures by Lili Chin and see if you can pick up on anything which your dog might be saying…

How long should your training sessions be with your dog?

Training your puppy or dog should be a fun and exciting experience for both you and your dog!

Your dog will need to absorb a lot of information and so sessions should be kept short, only a few minutes per session and allow your dog to rest afterwards.

You can have more than one session per day, for example, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Sessions should be ended whilst your dog is still fully engaged, don’t wait until he/she has lost interest or becoming lethargic.

How nice is a nice walk along the beach… or perhaps you would prefer to sit on the lounge with a good book? Just as we have different preferences on our favourite treats, dogs are similar. One dog would do anything for a piece of cooked chicken, whilst others would do anything for a good old tennis ball covered in dog slobber!

Choosing the right treat/reward for your dog is beneficial for getting the best results out of your training sessions and reinforcing your dog for the desired behaviour.

What is your dogs’ favourite treat?

Does it frustrate you that every time you open a door your dog pushes past you to rush into the room? For dogs, the opening of a door leads to a very long list of exciting things… a walk, a visitor, dinner and much more!

Teaching your dog to “wait” at a door for the cue to enter into a room or go through a doorway can be an effective way to help your dog to understand impulse control. This can also be useful for times of getting in and out of the car, before feeding or at any time you need your dog to wait for just a moment.

Does your dog like strangers?

I spent some time with Honey today after her owner contacted me as she doesn’t like anyone coming into the house who are not part of her immediate family. By the end of our session today this was the outcome.

From a dog who was barking at me upon arrival and wouldn’t come near me to sitting on my lap allowing me to give her pats. Her owner said this is the first time that Honey has ever sat on someone’s lap outside her family.

With the right small steps, we have great outcomes.

Do you talk dog talk?

When you are teaching your dog a new skill or exercise, it is important to use good communication to help your dog to understand what it is doing is correct or guiding him/her in the right direction. Some suggested cues to use are as follows:

“Yes" - this communicates that your dog is doing the desired behaviour. Pairing this word with a treat or a toy adds value and increases the likelihood of the behaviour being repeated.

“Release” - this communicates to your dog that the current exercise or command is finished and he/she can move off and is no longer required to be doing that particular skill. When teaching this to a new puppy or a dog which has not learnt this behaviour before, you will need to guide your puppy or dog to help him/her to understand what to do.

Does your dog have good table manners?

Do you have a dog that eats dinner too quickly? Dinner time is always an exciting time for a dog and some dogs get a little too excited and eat their food a bit too fast. Here are a few ways to help slow down your dog’s eating:

1. If your dog eats kibble, scatter the food so that he/she will have to scavenge for the food.

2. Feed your dog in a Kong or similar type of toy so that your dog will need to work the food out bit by bit.

3. Present the food in a puzzle type feeding bowl which works in a similar way to feeding in the Kong.

If you need any assistance with table manners for your dog, contact us.

International Dog Day

I think it should be International Dog Day everyday. Why? Because dogs are so much fun and they make a huge difference in our lives.

To celebrate International Dog Day I wanted to introduce two very special dogs to you. Daisy and Coco. Can you guess who they may belong to? ☺️

Daisy and Coco are 12 years old. Daisy is a Shi Tzu cross mini poodle and Coco is a Bichon Frisé cross mini poodle.

They both absolutely love a walk and nothing is more exciting than a walk down by the waters edge. Their favorite game is fetch and can usually be found lazing in the sun on a Sunday afternoon.

Keep an eye out on videos to come where Daisy and Coco will be the stars to help me to demonstrate training skills.

If you enjoy reading my posts, why not share my page so your friends and family can also enjoy them and learn new tips and tricks too!

Do you let your dog sniff when you take him/her for a walk?

Allowing your dog to sniff when you go for a walk allows him/her to discover who and what animals have been walking along the path before them.

The area in a dogs’ brain is able to smell 40 times greater than the human brain and their sense of smell is far more sensitive to humans so you can imagine that going for a walk (especially when the bins are out!) is a very exciting experience.

Be sure to be cautious where you allow your dog to sniff to ensure is it safe… Happy Sniffing!

How did your training go this weekend?

When training your dog, it does not just stop at sit, drop, stay and recall. It includes everything including:

- How you want to your dog to react when you go for a walk?
- What you want your dog to do before you feed him/her?
- Where do you want your dog to sit when you eat your dinner?

So many things to think and consider.

Happy Friday Zoomies!

Weekends are a great opportunity to get some training done with your dog. You can teach a new skill or even spend time refining or advancing on skills your dog already knows.

If you would like to teach a new skill or command, be sure to reward for each and every little step towards what you want to achieve. This communicates to your dog that what he/she just did is what you want.

One of the biggest frustrations of being a new puppy owner is toilet training. You turn your back for one minute and oops...

Here are 3 tips to help you with toilet training:

1. Frequently take your puppy to where you want him/her to go and reward your puppy for toileting in the correct place.

2. Watch for any signs your puppy wants to toilet and take your puppy to the toileting spot.

3. If you find an accident in the wrong place make sure to clean it up straight away.
