I bought my first horse at 19. She was a quarter horse filly who I named Tess. She had great Doc Bar heritage and tons of potential.

Because of a small defect in her neck, the owner couldn't get top dollar for her, and in turn let this sweet filly go uncared for.

She was 3 years old, only halter broke, with the kindest eyes and the sweetest disposition. I wasn't there to buy her originally, but I couldn't leave her there in that condition.

I brought her home and she was the first c**t I started. Lots of love, good feed, she filled out nicely, and always had the best attitude.

Due to lifes circumstances I had to do a care lease with her. The family fell in love, and turned out she loved working cows. They bought her from me a year later and she still lives on the ranch today.

In todays market it can be challenging to find a nice horse. If you have patience, a horse like this can be the best mount you ever have.

Our horses need 3 things. Long rides, wet saddle pads, and concentrated training.

If we never let them make a mistake, or never expose them to different situations, we never give them the opportunity to learn.

Today is ride 3 on Caliban. We rode from the barn about 1/2 a mile or so to Riley Arena. He did great! He was unsure about a few things. But easily settled and willing to move forward even when he was unsure. By the end of our ride he was relaxed and quiet.

Think of your horse like a car. We need good brakes, a gas pedal, a steering wheel, and an emergency brake.

Eventually we want to work on cruise control, installing a clutch, turn signals, etc.

The most overlooked step is our emergency brake and our gas pedal. Does your horse stop off your seat? Can you sit and slide the rein down, have them bend, soften, and come to a stop? Does your horse move when you squeeze with your legs and maintain his gate when you stop squeezing?

These two things are the foundation for everything else we want our horses to be able to do.

10 years ago I started my first c**t. She turned out to be an AMAZING little mare. From malnourished and green, to filled out and ready for whatever I threw at her.

The foundation put on a c**t is the most important part of their career. You can make or break a horse if they are saddled and ridden improperly.

How well do you know your horses body language? Do you know the telltale signs of a relaxed horse?

Every part of their body can tell us a different story - as a rider this understanding can be used to keep us safe.

Equus Magazine has a great article on body language. I will link in the comments below.

What I'm looking for with my horses is demonstrated by Paislee here after a session.

Signs a horse is relaxing during training:

1. Lowering the head and neck
2. Licking their lips
3. Cocking a hind leg
4. Blinking

Sometimes you won't get a huge relax from a horse depending on the individual and the stimulus.

As I have gotten older, I have learned to focus on the things that really matter in life. We aren't guaranteed our tomorrow.

In February of this year I left the highest paying job I would ever have. I was exhausted. No longer passionate. But I stayed because I care about people and wanted to take care of them.

I took time to reflect, rest, process grief from the last few years, and focus on my mental health. Thankful I have a supportive husband and could make that decision. Not everyone is so lucky.

Here I am, still caring for people, caring about animals, and wanting to help. I'm choosing to focus my time on what lights my eyes up, fills up my cup. This is my soul contract, what I believe to be my life purpose.

Let me help you create the relationship you always dreamed of with your horse. Contact me for a consultation.

Part of what makes or breaks an experience for horses, is pinpointing and understanding where the behavior is coming from.

It's important in my role to know as much about the horses history as possible. If we don't know everything, it isn't a deal breaker. I just have to listen to what the horse is telling me as intuitively as I can. But having history can help us address things in the right manner.

There is no such thing as a bad horse, just a misunderstood horse.

Meet Caliban. He is an 8 year old National Show Horse (3/4 Saddlebred, 1/4 Arabian).

His owner Michele bought him when he was 5 years old as an uncut stallion, that had never been handled. She has done a wonderful job getting him to where he is. A couple trainers have worked with him off and on helping his progress.

Michele came to me when her previous trainer had some life changes come up. Our goal with him is to be able to go to shows eventually. But our main focus is giving him more confidence, and making sure he is safe to ride.

Stay tuned for updates on this gorgeous gelding.

Meet our mounts, Paislee and Mr. Fizz

Horses are herd animals and prefer to be in groups rather than alone. We bought Mr. Fizz this Spring to be a companion. It's not unusual to catch them napping or grooming each other.

When interacting with your horses it is important to understand horse psychology. This helps us influence behavior to the desired outcome. If you watch horses in a herd, there is always a leader, and a pecking order. The leader can move every herd members feet around in the pasture. Sometimes it's pinning the ears. Sometimes it's biting and striking out.

Our goal is to always establish leadership of the herd and be number one. We do this by influencing the movement of their feet with our tools and body language.

I like to give my horses a break from time to time and let them just be a horse as well. Just like a vacation resets us. Pasture time, if possible, is great for them as well.

Following a lifelong dream. Read this post to find out what I offer and my goal for horse and rider.
