Water…Let’s talk about it 💧

It’s summer time, and everyone is looking to keep their pups cool and hydrated. However, if we are not attentive as dog owners, bodies of water could be fatal to our furry loved ones.

•

Algae poisoning can happen when our dogs consume water contaminated with algae. Algae poisoning affects the liver and nervous system.

Water Toxicity happens when dogs ingest too much water at once causing the body to quickly react trying to keep up. This can even lead to bloat which can be lethal as well.

They may consume the water consciously to get a quick sip of water, or they may accidentally consume it when they fetch a toy out of the water or while swimming.

Let’s talk sh¡t 👀💩

Do you know why it is important to pick up after your dog? If you didn’t, I’ll be happy to tell you why it is important.

• Health

Even though we can’t see it, dog p**p contains bacteria (duh), and in most cases, parasites and viruses that can make people and other animals very sick with diseases like E. coli, roundworms, and intestinal parasites like giardia.

• Environment

Most dogs eat highly processed commercial foods which can negatively impact our water quality and ecosystems. It attracts parasites, bugs, rodents, and contains high level of nitrogen and phosphorus which is not healthy for us or other animals.

• It’s the Law

Most owners do not know, or they just don’t care 🥴
But many counties/parishes have laws that require dog owners to pick up after their dog. Just like littering, you could get a fine for not being responsible and pick up after your dog.

A closer look into personal protection training 👀

Training is something we absolutely love! This is a great way to keep a highly active/prey driven dogs’ physical and mental needs met. With Briggz being a working dog, it is essential that her drive/needs are met when it comes to physical and mental exercise. This is one reason we train every Wednesday night with here in
New Orleans

Reminder! Get your furbabies vaccinated and microchipped this Saturday at the St. Bernard Animal Control Center.

Remember, rabies is the one shot that is needed by law, and microchips help you find your pet/s if they are lost without a collar or do not have a tag. When you get your animals microchipped, you MUST REGISTER the chip online or else it will not work!!!

ADOPTED

Bailey is our handsome sweet boy, but family’s are overlooking him.

10 days ago, Bailey's parent surrendered him to STPAS through no fault of his own - they were moving and couldn't take him with them. Now, people walk by Bailey's kennel and completely ignore him. He isn't "fluffy", he isn't purebred, he is just himself - sweet, calm as can be, quiet and polite. He is housebroken, knows commands and seems to get along with other dogs, but is still overlooked at our shelter. No one has ever even asked to meet him. He would fit well into any family (even an elderly citizen) and is a low energy, easy keeper.

If you have been looking for an easy boy to join your family, please consider Bailey. We love him and we hope one day someone else will too. He is 3 years old, neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative and microchipped. He weighs 35lbs.

Adoption fee's for all animals have been waived from the 7th-10th thanks to our Empty the Shelters event sponsored by Cathy Bissel. If you are interested in one of our adoptable pets, please give our shelter a call at 985-809-0183 to ask more questions or schedule an appointment to come in. We have appointments available all day.
