Hi everyone; I’m getting messages for avail birds etc. The majority of my avail stock is going into Lanark auction end of this month and the remainder will be going to Clitheroe poultry auction next month. Five of 12 eggs now set to hatch (the other 7 are due to hatch next week) from Tolkien (blue USA cockerel split for chocolate x Hershey single choc mottled Showgirl hen) praying we have some choc or mauve chicks hatch and even better if they are all single dose mottleds like mum 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 based on my calcs if Tolkien is indeed split for choc which I believe he is then I should have
25% choc, 25% mauve, 25% blue and 25% black all boys will be split for choc if not choc themselves

This is my second last hatch of the year (I promise!) 2 partridge, two blue splash USA, one splash showgirl, and five double dose mottled babies. The only other eggs I have to hatch will be from Tolkien x Hershey to hopefully get some more choc split USA/showgirls that tick all the boxes for type. I am at this stage only refining the tiniest of things being a perfectionist as always. Nothing is bred for the sake of breeding, it’s always to improve upon what I have already done in previous generations

Some of you will know I’m an animal sculptor (Louise Jarvis Art) so I have been working on miniatures to cast and sell. I’m hoping they will be collectible as will be loads of different colours available of each design so you can build your own wee family of chooks. Here are the first three sculpted….a USA silkie, a showgirl and a pekin, should have them moulded and cast in the next month and hopefully I can have some of them available to buy in time for Christmas.

***Latest dna results*** I’m happy to say I have two double dose mottled showgirl boys (split for choc) and a single dose blue mottled showgirl boy (split for choc) and a single dose black mottled showgirl (split for choc) and my Pyle USA chick is a boy too!! So we have a replacement boy now too for that group. Plenty of options for my pens next year - next stop choc mottled showgirls/USA and mauve, blue and black mottled SG and usa silkies too :) everything seems to be male end of the year this year which I don’t mind as knowing these are boys now it means those pens will progress nicely next year and I can produce chocolate and maybe mottled 🙌🏻🙏🏻

DNA test results!!! Absolutely over the moon!! Most people hate to hear that chicks are cockerels but on this occasion I was praying they were! Not one but both of my blue buff chicks are boys (one showgirl and one USA!) which is amazing. I can now continue my Blue Buff project next year - everyone knows I love a challenge but this one has been really hard! I have three hens this colour which has taken me three years to hatch them getting only one a year hatch from all the blue and splash chicks (originally got the first one from dedicating so much time on a calico project) so delighted now to have two boys that I can put to them to hopefully breed this colour consistently. Type is good, feet, pigment, eyes and wing so have high hopes for these wee fellows. Just thinking of a name for them both.

***Project choc*** alongside the other projects I am working on (mottled, blue buff, Pyle) I am trying to hatch decent chocolates (I stupidly sold my choc girls!) to produce more choc mottled (of which I have only ever had one choc mottled showgirl) she has now been paired with Tolkien who I believe is split for chocolate. Time will tell if or when Hershey starts to lay again after being broody for ages. Fingers crossed for some eggs before they all stop laying. I should have my dna results back this week for the five chicks’ samples I sent off for s*xing. Praying the blue buffs are boys 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Successful hatch I’d say! 11/13 from the mottled group. (100% fertility/85% hatch rate) 2 double mottled SG (showgirls) 2 single mottled SG (showgirls) 4 double mottled USA silkies 3 single mottled USA silkies (Sadly two eggs didn’t hatch but after opening I found they were single dose SG’s which can get stuck in the turning phase as their wee naked necks don’t slide around in the shell as easily (feathers lubricate them better) rip little ones. They now join the Pyle USA and SG chick 🐥

Mazza was naughty and hatched three little chicks yesterday! One more egg under her. Double mottled USA silkie chicks. Not sure what colour until they feather up 🐣🐥

A little boys dream...

A 6 year old little boy's dream - his mum invested in his little business buying him his first batch of eggs. With these chicks he will grow his flock, sell eggs to his neighbours to eat and hatch chicks to sell in return learning fully how to care for the chickens, learn the valuable skills of money management and how to run a little business (with his mum's help of course ;) His passion for animals at the centre of it all.
