New this week are cute little sister bookends - meet Jasper and Juniper! They are around 8 weeks old and were wandering around near Winthrop. A Good Samaritan scooped them up and they haven’t stopped purring since! Welcome to T&T little girls! They are available for pre-adoption and will be able to join your family once vaccinated and spayed!

This handsome little boy was found at a feral feeding station where all cats are fixed. Obviously he was dumped because he loves people and there are no mamas around there. He is now in foster care with Daffodil showing her how to kitten - he is really good at it! Will be available for adoption once vaccinated and old enough for neuter 💕

Welcome to T&T, Reggie (black nose) and Fritz (not black nose 😂)!

These two boys are a transfer from another amazing rescue who saved them from the euthanasia list at a high kill shelter. They are every bit adorable and will be available for adoption once they are a little bigger and have been neutered 💕

“Free” is never truly “free”.

“Free” is never truly “free”.

THE TRUTH about that "FREE" cat trapper:

Are you one of those people that post about all these cats at your job site that need to be gone IMMEDIATELY? All these cats having babies running rampant in your neighborhood, that either need to be fixed or taken away right now? All the cats in your apartment complex that howl all night? I can bet, when you post, someone always steps up to help you FREE OF CHARGE or they at least tag other people that may be able to help you FREE OF CHARGE

Well, guess what, that FREE OF CHARGE to you, is not FREE OF CHARGE to the cat trapper. Ya see, in order to trap cats, a trapper needs traps. Good traps cost anywhere from $70 up to $120 per trap. A trap alone won't work cuz you need to entice the cat to walk in so you need cat food, that can cost about $1 per can up to $30 per case (pending how many your trapping). Even though you put food in, you need to put something on the bottom of the trap to make it comfortable that the cat will want to go in to get the food. That means you need newspaper. Newspaper nowadays can run $2.50 +. Once the cat is in the trap they freak out until you cover it. That means you need sheets or blankets. Sheets and blankets start at about $2.50 and up. Unfortunately you can't just throw a twin, queen or king size sheet/blanket on the trap and think you're not gonna trip on it. So, someone has to spend their time cutting these sheets and/or blankets down to sizes for the traps or hope someone else can do it for them.

So the cat is now in the trap, he/she is covered. Where do you put the cat? The cat goes in the trappers truck. Even though you've got newspaper under the cat, chances are it got all bundled up when the cat freaked and when the cat p*es or p**ps, its gonna go all over the trappers truck. So, the trapper uses a water proof pad/blanket to go under the traps, on the floorboard. Those pads range from $20 and up

From here, where does the cat go until it's spay/neuter appointment/walk in (clinics-$60, some animal controls-free, some shelters-low cost). The cat/s have to go to someone's house to wait. Once at the house, you need to put something under the traps so p*e doesn't get on your floor or carpet. You'd need another waterproof pad or lots of puppy pads (these cost $12 or more). The cat now has to be fed and the newspaper has to be changed out cuz it's either wet, ripped up or has p**p on it. To help do this, so the cat doesn't escape, you can use a divider ($22 and up). The divider goes thru the trap so there's no opening at all for them to escape cuz they're blocked in.

The next morning the trapper takes the cat/s to clinic or walk in tnr, that's time out of their already busy schedule. Most trappers also microchip the cats they speuter so we either pay to use clinics chips or bring our own ($12 or more) Later that day they can pick the cat/s up, more time out of their schedule. The cat can't be released til the next day so again the cat/s have to go to someone's house, be fed and have the newspaper changed out again

The next day, earlier then usual, the trapper has to drive back to where they trapped the cat/s from in order to release them before going to work. Once this is over, the trapper has to disinfectant each trap they used and wash the waterproof pad before the next round of trapping.

Think about this, the trapper came to you to trap, took the cats somewhere, took the cats to clinic, went back to their life, drove back to clinic to pick them up, took them back somewhere, picked the cats back up and drove them back to be released, then drove back to their normal life. All that took gas in their truck. Which as you know, gas is not cheap.

If you're still a little confused after reading this, I'll make it clearer: Trappers have spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars just to help you FREE OF CHARGE.

Donating money, cat food, microchips, newspaper, blankets, sheets, traps, puppy pads, waterproof pads to cat trappers helps more than you'll ever know.

TNR Tip Tuesday: Trap Training

Trap training can be used to help a community cat get used to eating near and then in a trap BEFORE the trap is actually set, which can make trapping day more successful.

If a trap can be safely left outdoors in the cat's territory for an extended period of time, it's possible to train a community cat to go in it to eat.

The area needs to be secure so no one walks off with the equipment, like a secluded backyard or a private courtyard. The process usually takes from one to two weeks.

For each trap deployed, follow these instructions:

1. Secure the front door of the trap in a raised position. You can run a stick through the sides of the trap to block the door from falling or use a twist tie or similar item to tie it in place.

2. Place the trap in the cat's territory near the normal feeding spot. Leave it in place throughout the training.

3. On the first day of the training, put the cat's usual meal on the ground a foot or two away from the trap's front door. Use a small plate or bowl. Start further away for a more skittish cat.

4. Keep putting the plate at this spot, the same distance from the trap, until the cat starts eating the food. Then, for the next meal, move the plate six inches or so closer to the trap's front door. When the cat starts eating from this new spot, move the plate closer to the front door again.

5. Repeat this process until the plate is right next to the front of the trap. When the cat is comfortable eating there, move the plate a few inches inside the trap. Keep waiting for the cat to eat, then moving the plate a few inches further in until it is all the way in the back of the trap and she is going in after it.

On your scheduled trapping date, at the time the cat is used to eating, untie or unblock the front door, bait the trap, and set the trigger.

Less surrenders, more adoptions .. and I’ll add more spay/neuter!

Our Third Quarter summary is out!

Third Quarter
Animal Services overall intake increased 8% compared to third quarter last year. The biggest increase was in the number of owner surrenders that came in.

BREAKDOWN (comparing 3rd quarter this year to 3rd quarter last year)
◇ Confiscate seizures have increased 152%. The majority of these are cruelty related seizures.
◇ Owner surrenders increased 123%. This is a scary statistic.
◇ Return rates have decreased.
◇ Strays have actually decreased by 14%

That's what came in, now let's look at the other side.
◇ Our adoptions have decreased by 38% . Shelters and rescues everywhere in the US are seeing a decrease in adoptions and we are no different.
◇ Our rescue partners have stepped up and increased their support with a 21% increase in rescue transfers.
◇ Animals being reclaimed by owners has increased 75%
◇ Our TNR program has been on a hiatus since we lost our full time vet and has decreased by 67%.

Through all of this, we maintained a 85% live out rate, which is slightly lower than last year. We are working really hard to improve this, but we need 2 key things to make this possible: less surrenders and more adoptions.

Thank you to our community for your continued support of our efforts as we work to towards our lifesaving mission.

Please have these conversations with your loved ones, no matter how old you are, we are not promised tomorrow.

Don’t “assume” that someone you trust and love will take care for your precious pet if something happens to you. Make firm arrangements, so they do not end up alone in a shelter or worse…

22/10/2024

Please, PLEASE, please help a stray or feral community cat IMMEDIATELY - don't wait. There is no need to befriend a community cat before helping that cat, or you'll have more cats before you know it.

Call a low-cost clinic to make an appointment right away as many don't have appointments for weeks.

About 2 weeks before your appointment, rent or borrow a humane trap so you can trap the kitty, get it scanned for a microchip, and spayed/neutered and vaccinated as a starting point!!

If you have the means and ability to secure and help get the kitty ready for a home, do that AFTER it's been fixed. 😻

New kiddo is already starting to feel better! When I picked her up she was pretty wimpy and limp and just blah feeling. She’s got some good nom noms and meds on board and managed to crank out a few biscuits 💕

Name is still TBD. What would you name a very fluffy, grey cloud?
