Throwback Thursday🔙

DID YOU KNOW? We have been around since 1988? 35 years!

We're throwing it back to Friday, 1st October, 2004 (almost 20 years ago!😮) when a well known seal in Devon gave birth to her pup on a very public beach. Normally this would be a worrying move but in this case the people in the village made it their mission to keep the little pup protected 🙌

Seals can live for up to 35 years! I wonder where they both are now?

Just a gentle reminder whilst this weather is wonderful, there will be heavily pregnant grey seals about our reefs and islands.
Please please never get close enough to cause any panic that they feel the need to return to the water. Once they are looking at you the disturbance has started and the flight response will follow really quickly. They need that hauled out drying time to stay healthy, especially our pregnant females right now!
This poster below from the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust is the perfect reminder why to give ALL seals space.

As summer transitions into fall, we get a transition in our patients as well. While summer is filled with cases of maternal separation, fall is the time when those pups return back to the wild. Many of our patients now come in with complex illnesses and injuries.

Our volunteers and interns have been doing a great job keeping the Rescue Center going as patterns and plans shift based on the patients and their critical needs. Every day is different when it comes to rehabilitating sealife, and that is always apparent at this time of year!

📷 One of our newer patients, Peri Peri, gets transferred to the pool for a swim by a fall intern, Nicole. Peri Peri has pneumonia along with several injuries.

Seals are returning to the wild in droves! Dijon and Granola are back in the South Puget Sound again after three months at the Rescue Center, where they recovered from maternal separation, learned how to eat fish, and gained weight!

It’s a party in the outdoor pools! Many of our patients are now at the stage of their rehabilitation when they are able to spend the whole day outside - jumping in the pool when they are hot, or hauling out in the sun when they are cold. This thermoregulation is what they will be doing when they return to the wild as well!

Granola came to us in July due to maternal separation, and has officially doubled his weight! This round shape is what we want to see in harbor seals - it means they’ve got a good layer of blubber to keep them warm in the cold water.

As we get into fall and pupping season wraps up, we’ll start to see harbor seal patients who have lost weight due to illness, rather than maternal separation. If you see a seal in the wild that’s emaciated and lethargic, make sure to stay far away, keep your pets on a leash, and call the Marine Mammal Stranding Network at 1-866-767-6114.

[NL] Ook met Robusta gaat het prima ✨ Ze zwemt nu in een fase 3 bad, samen met nog andere zeehonden. Als het zo doorgaat, kan er gekeken worden naar wanneer ze vrijgelaten kan worden. En wat is er nou mooier dan weer terug naar de prachtige (koffiekleurige 😉) Waddenzee? Fijne donderdag! 😍

Fusilli von Wangerooge.
Die Quarantäne hat Fusilli gut überstanden, und seine Wunden heilen gut. In wenigen Wochen wird er fit genug sein, um wieder in die Nordsee entlassen zu werden.

Seehund SeeBastian hat sich bei uns in der Seehundstation in Norddeich gut erholt und ordentlich an Gewicht zugenommen. Seine Auswilderung steht kurz bevor und wir freuen uns, dass er sich so toll entwickelt hat.
