Happy New Year!
Yes, my new year post is belated but that just means there have been many things in the works.

My horses have pretty much had a month off so we're starting the new year at boot camp 💪🏻
Tino had a fantastic and exciting ground driving session 🧨 We focused on relaxation and paying attention to the "rider" on the ground.

Horses like this are one in a billion. When my sister asked for a leg up in the paddock, I had no doubt Pancho would happily hang out. No saddle, no bridle, no halter, no problem!

More on the German phrase that says “riding is only learned by sweeping.”

I remember an example of this one night, about 40 years ago, when I was spending a month at Walter Christensen’s dressage training stable, Stal Tasdorf, in Tasdorf, Germany. (photo of Walter teaching)

Walter’s main barn had a cobblestone type of floor, hard to keep clean because of all the indentations, and in various corners were funny little Hansel and Gretel type brooms, straight handles with what looked like a bunch of twigs wired to one end.

Everyone had left, all the working students, all the riders, and here was the master, then coach of the Swedish Olympic dressage team, vigorously giving the aisle one last cleanup before turning out the lights.

In the great scheme of things, why would it matter one iota whether the aisle was immaculate? Early next morning, when all the horses were being fed, hay and straw would get spilled all around, and who was going to see that floor in the middle of the night?

But that’s not the point, is it? And for those who do see the point, they probably would have been at one end of the broom. And for those who can’t grasp why it mattered to Walter, they’d have left it as it was.

To what extent can pride in a way of doing things be taught? Because that’s what’s at play here, I think.

And pride in one detail spills over into pride about other details, until it creates a mindset, a way of being. Or not---And in that way, sweeping teaches riding, tenuous as the connection might seem.

This mare has some incredible power. She was very fresh since it started to rain but with a mind like hers all that means is her movement becomes even bigger and more uphill than it usually is 💪🏻🫶🏻

Everyone meet Justa Red Cloud aka Pancho. Señior Pancho Villa is the newest addition to the crew as a beginner and kids lesson horse. He will be receiving some TLC, then hitting the arena. I'm so excited for the fun things he'll get to teach new riders 🐴🎉

Getting ready for her first rides in the round pen. Had to take it nice and slow with Sweetheart. She's on the jumpy side, so I make sure she's confident before moving forward.

Unfortunately fox hunting was canceled due to the biblical downpour. The 6 hour drive wasn't a total bust, I spent time with a great friend and got some books I've wanted for a while. 3 classical dressage books for less than $15 👌🏻📚

From my birthday ride a few days ago. I decided to go somewhere I haven't gone before, I look Tino and the dogs to Allie Canyon. I got a little taste of the fall colors but was mostly greeted with pines. It was a round trip ride of about 12 miles; we had fun!

Yesterday was bittersweet. Shay came to me 90 days ago scared of her own shadow and barely halter broke, yesterday she went home with experience, education, and thought process. During her time with me she proved to be extremely sensitive, kind, smart, soft, and willing; all of the best qualities in a young horse. I'm gonna miss you Tommy Shay ❤️
