As a pet owner, you need to make sure to have basic first aid supplies for your pets in your household. This is a sample first aid kit checklist for you:

* Gauze: For wrapping wounds or muzzling the injured animal
* Nonstick bandages, towels, or strips of clean cloth: To control bleeding or protect wounds
* Adhesive tape for bandages: Do not use human adhesive bandages (eg, Band-Aids®) on pets. For securing the gauze wrap or bandage
* Milk of magnesia
* Activated charcoal: To absorb poison
* Always contact your veterinarian or local poison control center before inducing vomiting or treating an animal for poison
* Hydrogen peroxide (3%) To induce vomiting

* Digital Thermometer: you will need a "fever" thermometer because the temperature scale of regular thermometers doesn't go high enough for pets. To check your pet's temperature. Do not insert a thermometer in your pet's mouth—the temperature must be taken rectally.
* Eye dropper (or large syringe without needle): To give oral treatments or flush wounds
* Muzzle (in an emergency a rope, necktie, soft cloth, nylon stocking, small towel may be used): To cover your pet's head.
If your pet is vomiting, do not muzzle it!
* Leash: To transport your pet (if your pet is capable of walking without further injury)
* Stretcher (in an emergency a door, board, blanket or floor mat may be used): To stabilize the injured animal and prevent further injury during transport

You can print out a copy of this checklist to use as a shopping list, and keep a copy on your refrigerator or next to your pet first aid kit for quick reference in emergencies.

Always remember that any first aid administered to your pet should be followed by immediate veterinary care. First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet's life until it receives veterinary treatment)

WHEN AN EMERGENCY OCCURS

Here are some things you can do to help keep your safe dog in case of an emergency:

Secure the accident area and remove any physical threats (a chewed electrical wire, aggressive animals, harmful substances, glass splinters, etc).
Keep calm all the time.
Compress any bleeding, minor or major cuts.
Check his vital signs (pulse rate, breathing, etc.).
Start CPR if the pet shows breathing issues.
Call emergency numbers.
Perform more first aid as directed by your vet.
Check if your pet has broken or injured bones before moving him.
Drive your pet to the nearest vet clinic as soon as possible.

Are you battle-ready to handle any pet emergency?

These are the basic first aid you must know

1. Ready those emergency contacts. Emergency contact numbers of your veterinarian and of animal poison control in your area must always come in handy.

2. Prevent accidents. While you can’t always be around to stop any accidents from occurring, it is your responsibility as pet parents to at least minimize the hazards and dangers surrounding your pets.

3. Consider getting training. Taking a pet first aid emergency class is one of the greatest ways you can actually handle a pet emergency better.

4. Come up with a first aid kit. First aid kits are always handy. You can put together a DIY kit for your pet or purchase one that has already been put up together.

5. Act immediately. If your pet encounters an emergency, don’t let the adrenaline rush get the best of you. Act fast but remain calm.

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE A PROFESSIONAL P**PER SCOOPER

1. Stormwater carries pet waste and other pollutants directly into waterways.
2.Animal waste adds nitrogen to the water. Excess nitrogen depletes the oxygen in water necessary for beneficial underwater grasses, wildlife and fish.
3.Animal waste may contain harmful organisms such as Giardia, Salmonella and E. coli that can be transmitted to humans and other animals by ingesting contaminated water.
4. Roundworms and hookworms deposited by infected animals can live in the soil for long periods of time and be transmitted to other animals and humans.
5. It’s the law! Many urban and suburban areas require you to pick up after your pet. Even if there is no restriction, cleaning up after your pet is always the right thing to do.
6. Joining the growing number of responsible pet owners may encourage hotel managers to accept pets when you are traveling and help keep fees to a minimum.
7. No one likes to step in pet waste and spread it into homes, cars and businesses.
8. Scooping on a daily basis and applying lime will help prevent odors.
9. It’s easy to clean up by carrying plastic baggies and paper towels in your pocket. The baggies can be secured and thrown away in the garbage.
10. Your neighbors will appreciate your good manners.

The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists, (aPaws) wants to remind all dog owners that they should do their part not only during the International P**per Scooper Week, but all year, by taking the time and care to make sure their pets’ and family’s environment is kept clear of potentially fatal health threats.

The attraction of flies, gnats, and bad smells can be a neighborhood nuisance if yards are not maintained. Also, a number of common parasites, including round worms, are transmitted via dog f***s. Some property management companies and condo associations are seeing the benefit of using a professional p**per-scooper service to maintain their common areas. For some dog owners, finding a workable solution has been either too time consuming, so they ignore it completely. Hopefully, that doesn’t describe your neighbor!

The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists was founded in February 2002. In recognition of a growing problem in our communities, aPaws has established a special week of educating pet owners on the importance of cleaning up after their dogs.

It can be a pain to pick up p**p, but between its impact on nature and hefty fines, avoiding it can lead to even bigger problems. Cleaning up immediately after your dog makes life easier for you, your neighbors, and your dog! Actually, Dog P**p Scooping is our responsibility as a pet owner. It is already passed as a law and that cleaning up after your dog-and simply part of being a good neighbor! Many cities have enacted what is nicknamed the “p**per scooper law” and will fine dog owners who don’t pick up after their dog in a public place. If you’re in Madrid, one park will even box up your dog’s p**p and mail it back to you, according to The Washington Post! Not all areas have gone to that extreme, but you can face fines into the thousands in many cities.
