This is what “RESCUE” looks like. It’s not always pretty and it doesn’t always (or never) go as planned- it’s hard, emotional, exhausting, stressful- for all involved. This particular German Shepherd had been living on the streets for an unknown amount of time, day and night attempting to jump the block wall to perceived safety. Neighbors tried to no avail to secure her. Rain storms passed and soaked with water she became slower and more tired. Animal Control was ultimately involved and able to contain her and bring her safely out of the cold. Sadly, scared dogs don’t do well in places full of other frightened dogs and all kinds of fear pheromones filling the air. To no surprise, she was red listed on her first available day. We couldn’t let this be the outcome for her. Hiding in the back of the shelter kennel, she had no idea if she should give trust or fear the hands coming to pick her up. Three days have gone by and she is beginning to decompress. We can see the life in her eyes starting to come back. Her breathing is a little less frantic. She eats with less fear that someone or something will come up from behind. Today is a big day as she will go visit our vet friends at Alicia Pet Care Center to make sure we aren’t missing any medical conditions. She will likely come back exhausted and bewildered as every little thing is brand new to her. Her name is now Mika, meaning Gift from God. She is truly a gift and we are hopeful that we will be able to restore her spirit on her journey toward adopted.
