With Christmas right around the corner I have to bring up the a pretty touchy subject , and it’s this every year animals are purchased for children for Christmas and weeks later those animals are sold because the child grows bored of it or it’s not as cute interesting . If your getting a pet for your child or another child or even friend family member or spouse please take in consideration the following . Is this an animal they actually want ? Will that person have time for said animal ? Can this person or parents of person afford to take care of them ? Are you going to make this animal part of the family or just something to look at ? So many animals are abandoned or neglected after Christmas , don’t be one of those people. I use my Tarantula Ronnie as a good example for a good pet gift for Christmas , the care requirements are minimal and they don’t require much human interaction . With all this said we here at Upstate Scales and Tails hope you all have a Merry Christmas !

Hey everyone with cold and flu season is upon us here are some things to watch for in your rats!

Upper Respiratory Infections can be pretty serious if not treated! If you have a cold your rats can catch it if you aren’t careful! If your rat(s) start sneezing this is a sign of illness the sneezing can turn into wheezing if left untreated healthy rats do not sneeze very often if at all. Worst case scenario if you notice your rats feet turning blue or your rat is getting sluggish you should immediately contact a vet! There are two meds you can use for URI Amoxicillin and Doxycycline. Make sure you talk to a Vet or bring your rat in for a visit to be absolutely sure. Rats can develop allergies too better to be safe than sorry. Quarantine your rat(s) away from your other rats as URI can be contagious. When on amoxicillin your rat could develop wet tail this can be treated with drops. It’s good to give this med with yogurt and to give pedialite if you notice wet tail. With either of these meds they can develop wet tail so they may lose a bit of weight up their food amount while on meds and include favorite snacks more often. DO NOT give milk products to your rat when on doxycycline. Doses are as follows for these two meds. Again always ask your vet!

Amoxicillin- 10mg per pound of pet given 2 times per day for 10-14 days.

Doxycycline- 2.5mg per pound of pet given 2 times per day for 14-30 days.

If you don’t notice a change in symptoms within 3 days of amoxicillin you may need to switch to the doxycycline. As we always say do your own research so you can make an informed decision!

Our Red shoulder peacock cichlid fry are growing fast 1st set are 1.5 inches almost 2 😊... some people frown upon green algae but this isn't a show tank. The green algae acts as a biofilter and sucks toxins out of the water as well as adding a food source for our river snails, trapdoor snails, mystery snails, and ramshorn snails 🐌 ♥

Too many foolish people think that rats are disease ridden or carrying a virus. That they are dirty little pests. Well rats are loving and genuine pets that are very clean and great conpanions when well taken care of. When we started our business I was sceptacle of rats as I was fed misleading information and advice on rats my whole life but my fiance and co owners opened my mind to the true nature of these loving pets. Rats are misjudged and greatly unrepresented in this world they have the ability and capability of being the best pets you could ever own, given the chance. So please do your research and maybe even look at our care sheets if you want but the pictures of our babies and parents say it all we love our rat family and we hope that you all take the chance to experience the love and fun that rats give us in your lives too.
