These harmful dyes are banned in other countries.. for both human and pet consumption.

All hail the number one selling dog treat the world, owned by J.M. Smucker: “The Milk-Bone”!🦴

““We anticipate our total dog snacks portfolio to grow approximately 3% annually over the next two years to US$1 billion💰 in annual net sales,” reports the company.

My gosh that’s a lot of dogs🐕 eating milk-bones!!

However, Brazilian & Canadian 🇧🇷 🇨🇦 scientists are not particularly rejoicing in the success of all the milk-bones being sold and consumed by dogs. In a recent paper published in ResearchGate, one of the many commonly used, synthetic petroleum-derived, food coloring dyes may be leading dogs to express anxiety and potentially unwanted behaviors.😾 Today, studies show over 70% of dogs have some kind of highly problematic behaviour.

In fact, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment acknowledges these same synthetic food dyes, also used in human food, are linked to hyperactivity and behavioral problems in children.😵‍💫

To make matters worse, one coloring agent: E171, used in Milk-bones and several other pet products, has been banned🚫 by the European Commission as a food additive due to the fact it has been shown in studies to damage DNA🧬 thus accelerating the aging process and shortening lifespan in animals.

Join me tomorrow, Sunday at 10am Eastern, on my Planet Paws page as we go over the ingredients you need to watch out👀 for if you are feeding or know someone feeding milk-bone products.

P.S. – some of these potentially harmful dyes can be also found in some of the most popular selling pet foods that we will touch on as well.

Excellent article about Titers and Vaccinations.

Titer has become a very important and often controversial term in today’s veterinary world. No laboratory test in my memory has been more misunderstood, misinterpreted, misused, and downright maligned by owners and veterinarians alike. The most extreme example is the rabies vaccination. While this...

Offer These Crunchy Veggies to Your Pet 💚

They also make for great training treats or stuffing for enrichment toys. 👍

Your dog & cat’s microbiome🦠 is EVERYTHING. Literally! If you aren’t diversifying food groups🍄🥛🥩🫐🥕 for you and your pets, this WILL stunt the development of the gut biome diversity and overall immune health. Science is clear about that.

With so many myths🙅🏼‍♀️ about what’s good and what’s bad, “pet nutrition experts”🧑🏻‍💻 have vilified some amazing plants that have documented incredible health benefits for pets, forcing pet parents to revert back feeding ultra-processed foods by confusing the life out of our choices. Shameful, and with no scientific justification. 🤯

Quotes like: “the group I’m in says to never feed root veggies because they’ll kill my pet, they are too starchy to feed a carnivore and will cause inflammation & pancreatitis.” Um, what? In contrast, the Dr Cave study showed how quickly a dog’s microbiome crashed when no prebiotic veggie fibers were included. Carnivores need a lot of fiber, but they don’t need starch! With mountains of animal science showing the benefits of fiber from plants, these self-proclaimed “dog health experts” have caused tremendous food fears in the pet world, pushing folks to feed completely fiber-free diets that are creating havoc with our animals’ guts, causing serious GI problems resulting in vet visits, with vets concluding all fresh food diets are AWFUL and are so poorly formulated they create unnecessary disease 😖😭😤🤬. How about we just do things right, based on science?! How about following the latest gut research and literature, telling us what dogs and cats need to create a healthy microbiome?! For instance, when it comes to turnips and other cruciferous vegetables — a lower risk of cancer because they contain DIM (3,3′-diindolylmethane). They also contain a compound called sulforaphane, which plays an integral role in cancer prevention. Sulforaphane interferes with the function of histone deacetylase, an enzyme that plays a role in the progression of cancer cells.

We top our pups food with 3 blueberries every meal.

We top our pups food with 3 blueberries every meal.

The holy grail of longevity foods, protecting your dog like a suit of armour.🫐

Blueberries are an awesome source of prebiotic fiber and are chock-full of polyphenols. Studies have found that blueberries delay the aging process by promoting the repair of DNA strands.🧬 Diets supplemented with this blue antioxidant powerhouse can potentially sustain the body’s antioxidant levels and protect against oxidative damage💥, making them one of our top recommendations you can share from your refrigerator!

We use a lot of frozen blueberries as training treats, when fresh blueberries aren’t in season. But be forewarned: more than one blueberry for every two pounds of body weight a day (i.e., five blueberries for a ten-pound dog) can lead to completely benign dark blue p**p, so feed a few, then move on to other Longevity Foods as healthy rewards.

Spinach is excellent longevity food for our pups.

Spinach is excellent longevity food for our pups.

One of the Best Foods to Slow Dog Aging: Spinach!🍃🧊🐾

In our upcoming “how-to longevity book” called The Forever Dog Life, we have an exciting science-based section on how to prepare longevity cubes🧊 for your pets and inspire you to create endless combinations! Here’s a spinach longevity cube idea if you aren’t already making these:

Folate is an essential B vitamin💊 found in food. It helps with the production of DNA and without folate new, healthy DNA cannot be created. Cell biologist and longevity researcher Rhonda Patrick, PhD, maintains that “a deficiency in folate is equivalent to standing under ionizing radiation due to the DNA🧬 damage it causes.” And DNA damage is a BIG contributor to aging.

More recently, folate has also been shown to play a role in protecting telomeres, those important structures at the end of chromosomes that are shortened with age and lifestyle choices; shorter telomeres are associated with shorter lifespan and higher incidence of disease. Being highly heat-sensitive , folate is one of the first nutrients to be inactivated in processed pet food.

In addition to its many vitamins and minerals, spinach provides antioxidants tied to anti-inflammation and disease protection. These include kaempferol, a flavonoid shown to reduce the risk of cancer, as well as slow its growth and spread. Another, called quercetin, has been linked to possible protective effects on memory🧠 as well as heart disease🫀 and type 2 diabetes. Two of the lesser-known glycoglycerolipid components of spinach include sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol (SQDG) and monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG), which are known for their anti-cancer activity. Overall, spinach contains the second-largest quantity of total glycoglycerolipids among other popular vegetables!

How to prepare spinach🍃for you and your dog?

Scientists say the best way to consume spinach for maximum lutein intake may be puréed. That’s because when spinach is chopped into small pieces, more lutein is released from the leaves. Older research found that cooking also impacts the folate content of spinach; boiling slashed this B vitamin level by nearly half. Steaming, however, resulted in no significant loss of folate! Cooking also diminishes the vitamin E levels in spinach (and reduces oxalates, if you want to reduce oxalate consumption) but actually increases the amount of beta carotene. So it can be served cooked or raw.

Looking for an easy recipe to get spinach into your dog? Try making our Spinach Longevity Cubes!🍃🧊🐾

INGREDIENTS-

* 5 ounces of fresh or steamed spinach (preferably organic)
* 2/3 cup of water (even better, try bone , beef or chicken broth, preferably organic)

INSTRUCTIONS-

* Add spinach and water (or broth) in a blender and puree. If the mixture seems too thick, add in extra broth.
* Pour the puree into ice cube trays and freeze until solid.
* Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Add 1 ice cube🧊 per 30lbs of body weight a day to your dog’s meal.

This is one simple and powerful way to add longevity benefits to your dog’s bowl! Looking for more ideas or recipes? Check out our new book available this spring: The Forever Dog Life with dozens of other suggestions available here: www.ForeverDogLife.com
