It has been brought to our attention that a litter of hairless Miniature Dachshunds has been deliberately bred, which is most likely for money rather than the health of the animals. We know this is deliberate as the hairless gene does not exist within the breed. As some of you may already know, there are a large proportion of Dachshunds that already suffer skin issues, and the deliberate breeding of those without hair will only compound the issue.

Please see the link in the comments for further information and please share far and wide, so we can stop this. Thank you xx

I am thrilled to announce that I am now a fully fledged Dynamic Dog Practitioner! 🥳🥳🥳

I am now fully trained in canine biomechanics, static & dynamic critical analysis, vet report writing and have knowledge of how pain & discomfort can exacerbate and in some cases cause unwanted and often problematic behaviours in dogs.

The course was an intensive 4 month commitment where I was coached, supported and assessed every step of the way, including successful completion of case study submissions, to ensure I had an in-depth knowledge of a variety of topics to confidently analyse and support our canine companions.

I cannot wait to put my new knowledge to good use.

CHECK OUT MY "FEEDING DOGS" MASTERCLASS!!
I just put together a whopping big masterclass for all those punters interested in changing their pets to real food...but they're either confused with all the contradictory info online or they have questions.

The course covers everything you need to know about feeding dogs yourself. And I do mean EVERYTHING (details below!).

Over 3.5hrs long, it will come with (at least the paid version will!) a few handy chapters from my book, slides, a cert to prove to your employer you at least have learned the basics and entrance into a little community I'm building, sort of like a hangout (calling it The Den) where we can chat, post questions, all sorts. More on all that later as the site is still in development.

As you can see from the testimonials, this highly popular course is ideal for the fresh-feeding beginner, intermediate, for pet store owners and think it might work to shift over a few customers on the fence or you are admin of a group trying to help lots of people.

Enjoy!

RAWHIDE:

With Christmas fast approaching we are moving towards the time of year when we typically start to see all the bright and colourful Rawhide appear in lots of pet shops.

What is Rawhide:

Rawhide is a by-product of the Leather industry and is not natural or edible. When the skin is turned into shoes or handbags it is the valuable outer layer which is used and it’s the inner waste layers that get made into chews, glue and soap (glue and soap are not food products). Then to make these more appealing to dogs some Rawhide contain beef, chicken, or liver flavourings.

Why Rawhide:

All dogs need to chew because chewing is instinctual for the dogs, it provides mental stimulation, it helps to reduce stress, and it helps to keep teeth clean.

Risks:

Rawhide is not a food product and therefore it is not possible for your dog to digest it and due to how that it is made it can contain toxic chemicals. Some dogs can be allergic to Rawhide or the substances used in it’s manufacture which can cause an upset tummy. More seriously Rawhide can also cause choking or blockages particularly if your dog manages to swallow large pieces which can then become lodged in the oesophagus and other parts of the digestive tract. A vet may be able to remove the pieces easily depending on where they are located however it could result in abdominal surgery if the pieces get lodged in the stomach or intestines.

How you can help to protect your dog:

Please don’t buy Rawhide and risk your dog’s health. It may be that you have given Rawhide in the past and this has not caused any issues with your dog, but the truth is it can and does happen. Is it worth the risk?

There are natural and safer long-lasting alternatives such as:

* Antlers.
* Yaka.
* Pizzle.
* Tendons.
* Cow's Ears.

Let’s end the Rawhide trade for good and provide our dogs with healthy alternatives.

Thank you for reading.

For all the dog walkers ❤️

We're launching a brand new course and certification for Professional Dog Walkers *tomorrow morning*
Time to sort the wheat out from the chaff!
A comprehensive series of four seminars delivered LIVE over four Sunday afternoons. Written for anyone who is walking or contemplating walking dogs professionally. The seminars are based not only around the practical aspects of running a dog walking business but also delve into the many areas that contribute to the dog’s welfare whilst they are under your care.
This complex subject involves knowledge of the law, risk assessment, canine welfare, canine behaviour and behaviour change, introducing dogs to each other, dog body language, handling and numerous small considerations that can easily be overlooked. Along with the science, skills and business considerations required to work in this way, the seminars include tips and important observations that have kindly been suggested by experienced professional dog walkers.
The seminars include video of different scenarios with dogs, linked to handling, breed typical behaviour, dog to dog introductions and observing body language in general.

On the face of it this would appear to be a training issue however, there is so much more to this than training. A behaviourist will answer your question with lots more questions to establish the root cause of why the dog isn't comfortable with walking through the door, rather than simply focusing on getting the dog to perform the desired behaviour.

Questions, Questions... So many questions!

And so there should be! What questions would you ask?

Q: My dog won't go through the front door when we get home from a walk - why is this?

A (more questions!): What normally happens after the dog goes through the door and arrives home? Has anything 'scary' happened as the dog has walked through the door (single event learning)? Does the dog have a rescue background? How old is the dog? Is the dog neutered and when? How aroused is the dog when you approach home after a walk? What are the traits of the breed and could any of these impact on the situation? There are so many more questions that could be asked relating to this case to ensure we are fully informed and explore as many possibilities as we can and to rule out if not appropriate, including pain.

HOW LABELS WE USE CAN BE UNHELPFUL

We have been talking about labels that we use with dogs recently (see the recent 'My dog is stubborn' post. Sitting, currently listening to Dave Brice lecturing on Dog to Human Aggression and how we can approach this in our work as canine trainers and behaviourists. Canine aggression - now there is a HUGE and misused/misidentified phrase if there ever was one 'My dog is aggressive...' - really, are you sure??

For anyone who thinks they may have a 'stubborn' Dachshund 😎

MY DACHSHUND IS STUBBORN! True or false??

It is interesting that, on National Dachshund Day, the most common word that we are seeing describing Dachshunds is ‘stubborn’.

Now, the definition of the word ‘stubborn’, according to the Oxford English Dictionary is:
‘Hard to convince, persuade, or move’; ‘obstinate’; ‘often disapproving, determined not to change opinion or attitude’.

Hmmm… the definition seems a human description, a bit negative, and we are not so sure that it captures the nature and disposition of the wonderful dog that is the Dachshund or will help in training or understanding them.

So, let’s see if we can change opinions!

Consider the nature of the tasks that the breed has been developed for over the centuries, traits that are held in high esteem by humans – bravery, strength, independence - making them suitable for hunting, flushing, and digging out underground dwelling critters. By starting to look into the breed specific ‘predatory motor pattern’ or innate behaviour of the Dachshund, we will start to uncover what makes the breed ‘tick’. What floats a Dachshund’s ‘boat’? How to talk ‘Dachshund’.

Through an understanding of what motivates specific breeds to offer the behaviours we are looking for; we can harness this knowledge to learn how to train the breed successfully and importantly, build a strong, productive and positive relationship.

So, the first ‘tool’ you need in your Dachshund training ‘toolbox’ is a good understanding of their breed specific predatory motor pattern. Interested to learn more…:

Have a great evening!

For anyone who may be struggling 💗

For anyone who may be struggling 💗

A quickie on guilt …

At the moment huge numbers of people in the UK and likes elsewhere are struggling financially. It is great how much owners care about feeding their dog, but for those who can’t, it’s important to stop the guilt.

Right now the most important thing is that your dog is fed, and that the food provides what they need. This means raw, cooked, kibble, tins - any kind of food. Do not feel bad. What is most important right now is that everyone can pay their bills, and that dogs are fed.

Tips:

- If coasting a pet shop aisle - whatever the kind of food look for the word ‘complete’.

Complete means that it is likely to contain the nutrients your dog needs. Let’s step away from our more subtle pros and cons lists on supplement types and processing on this just now. If you need food to be cheap, any *complete* is GOOD ENOUGH for now.

I’ve had pets in the vets that have been eating just mixer biscuit (not remotely balanced) for months and months … this is different and it is genuinely dangerous feed only a mixer type product. It may result in vet visits that cost far more than the food saved…

- You CAN feed part raw part kibble - it does not have to be all or nothing. If you need to save some money but still want to use part raw or home cooked - you can. This is what I am doing right now.

- DO take care with cheap raw completes… many are made with very cheap boney fatty cuts. Good raw completes can be excellent, but dirt cheap ones may actually be a hazard. Personally I would prefer a balanced kibble to a cheap boney fatty raw complete… (there are more of these than you’d think….)

- You CAN feed leftovers if you avoid toxic, high fat and processed foods - avoid all onion family, processed sausages etc, and check gravy! Most gravy contains onions salt and often MSG. Unbalanced leftovers should ideally not make up more than 10% of overall intake and you should be most careful about balance in growing dogs

I have had some financially dire times in the past where my dogs ate the cheapest kibble I could find alongside leftovers and eggs - because - for me - it was better to keep my dogs and keep them fed than to panic about not being able to afford fresh food at that moment. They are fine, I’m fine.

Most importantly right now - do not feel guilty, and for those who are still lucky enough to be financially able to feed good quality fresh food please try hard not to make others feel bad if they can’t. The raw feeding world is sometimes a very vocal one and conversations can get pretty heated on social media - I hope that some of the raw vet followers can be the voice of reason elsewhere and help those struggling to feel supported and not judged.

Hope everyone is doing ok.

🧨 🎆 ✨ 🎇 F I R E W O R K S 🎇 ✨ 🎆 🧨

There are lots of fireworks going off in my area tonight and it's likely to continue for a few days with the lead up to Halloween and bonfire night.

This time of year can be so traumatic and stressful for our dogs. If your dog is scared by fireworks or is caught off guard by one, then they are likely to spook easier when out and about. I recommend either walking your dog on a lead for a few days, or having some time off walking and doing activities at home such as training, games, treasure hunts with pieces of food etc.
