Loose Lead Walking
WALKING YOUR DOG:
Loose lead walking is one of the most difficult exercises to teach and this can leave us feeling frustrated and not knowing what we can do to help our dogs. The reason for this is there is potentially so much going on the environment that can impact this and it could be things that we may not necessarily be aware of.
If your dog can walk nicely in some places but not in others this is our dogs communicating that they are not comfortable in a certain environment, this also applies if your dog refuses to walk on some occasions. You may also see your dog pulling on the lead to get back home to their safe place if they are feeling unsure.
Pulling on the lead and refusal to walk are both things that I have experienced with my dogs in the past.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOUR DOG:
• Think about the environment you are walking in for example road, park, or woods.
• Think about how busy the environment is with people, dogs, or cars etc.
• Think about the time of day.
• Think about the weather.
• Observe your dog and their behaviour.
• Look for any patterns in your dog’s behaviour.
• Consider whether your dog is happier to walk in some environments than others and listen to what your dog is communicating to you.
• If your dog is more confident in certain areas look to build confidence in these areas before moving onto others.
• You can practice focus exercises with your dog.
• It’s important to work at your dog’s speed and take this slowly.
Around a year ago, this was something that I was experiencing when I was out walking with Opie. I have done lots of work to build his confidence and this is a little video that I captured when I was out walking with him back at the beginning of the year. It shows the progress we made by me observing his behaviour and understanding his needs.
Thank you for reading, and if you’re struggling with any aspect of your dog’s behaviour, please feel free to contact me.
