Bean update!

He’s been going absolutely amazingly. We are still taking things slow to keep him comfortable and happy with his retraining.
Yesterday we did some free schooling and groundwork. His first time let loose in the arena to work and he offered me SO much! He was relaxed, willing to participate and kept offering more even when I was done.

This morning was our third ride in the new bridle/bit set up (a gorgeous pink .official dressage bridle, with a copper lozenge loose ring snaffle). And each ride is getting better and better. He’s truly accepting the contact, listening and happy! Before he would brace and lock up but with the new gear he is soft in the hand and really starting to engage his hind.
He’s becoming such an amazing riding horse and I’m so excited for this year ahead 💖💖

Thoughts on this? As opposed to the previously thought “overnight grazing is safer”
I have always been taught that overnight grazing is the safest options for ponies at risk of laminitis however now I am seeing more and more research that this is in fact not the case. Which would make sense as the sugars are built up and stored throughout the day to help release and grow the grass at night time

The classic summer mix of rain, warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine can quickly cause a pasture flurry in the matter of just a few days! So, it is very important after such spells, that we take extra care and vigilance on our horses who are more vulnerable to high sugar diets ☀️

Did you know that the actual time of day can have an effect on pasture sugar levels?

As light intensity increases, so does a plants photosynthetic rate, which produces sugars, right up until several hours after sunset. It often isn't until the depths of the night that the plant has processed its photosynthetic goods, and returned to its baseline level, ready for the next day of sunlight. This means that the early morning period can be the most favourable time for low sugar grazing.

Beans first outing!

For Christmas one of my amazing clients always lets us decide between a horsey or people experience/outing. I obviously have always chose the horsey one! This year it was a session with .equineconnectioncoach with Bean.

Having not taken B anywhere since he arrived I was extremely nervous about how he would load, travel and react when he was there. He blew me away completely. Straight up onto the box, travelled brilliantly and came off like nothing phased him! He took a while to completely settle and had to keep moving (proving his busy body brain). Pacing around like he was in the parade ring at a racecourse 🤣

Tracey read beans body language (and his mind) and gave exercises to help keep his focus on inside the arena. He’s had an issue with “sight seeing” and loses focus quickly as outside is more exciting. But the session went amazingly and by the end his sole focus was with me, he was listening, alert and even started to ask me questions about what next!
He softened up completely and it was the first time I’ve seen him relax down and release all his tension giving a beautiful swinging walk. The session gave me some brilliant tools to help bean help himself! I had the best day and it was beautiful to see the change from start to finish.

did amazing getting us there and back safely!

Today was a dog day!!

I don’t have many canine clients but the ones I do have I adore (and they adore me too! So much so that both Luna and Sky knocked me clean over saying hello!)

I’m so lucky that they both live just down the road from a fantastic wooded area with lots to smell and hundreds of sticks to throw (cue sore arm from launching sticks for an hour).

I can safely say both pairs of dogs thoroughly enjoyed themselves today 🥰

Sumo back in action for trudging through fields and dodgy roads 😁 just got to upgrade the tyres next!

Regular morning clients that I currently have full time and I am loving seeing them 3 times a day 🥰 although getting squished between a bottom and a chest for scratches is not ideal!

NOTICE TO ALL CLIENTS:

Due to an unfortunate and serious collision along the main road I use to get to all of you I may be delayed as I will be having to use a diversion and most likely encountering a lot more traffic down the back roads that I can use.
The road is said to be closed until midnight on the 4th October to allow for forensics / resurfacing.
My thoughts are with those affected 🩷

Not urgent as I have no desire yet, but does anyone know of any gallops/canter tracks to hire out - as close to heathfield as possible 🤪 one day I would like to take the boy for a blast round

The gift that keeps on giving!!

Beanie baby proving himself once again 🥰 this absolute superstar of a horse really makes me doubt that I’ve bought a 5yo OTTB!
Having to cross a main road, just past the 60 signs, when he’s apparently never seen much traffic and he just stood there not phased - just like most things I present to him 🤣
He is so unbelievably chill, and that’s just what I want! He’s gained so much confidence from our in hand walks around the farm, that he kept over taking and leading the way!
Anyone that knows me, knows just how nervous I can get. There was a few months where I wouldn’t even sit on a horse let alone hack out.
Only once did I feel those nerves creeping in, because Bean got a little strong and excited through the muddy woods and all of those horrible anxious thoughts came rushing in; I expected him to react to those but he did the opposite! He calmed down immediately came back to walk and stayed steady.

I’m so lucky that the people around me are understanding of my need to take things slow: if I need to stop, get off, turn around, have someone walking next to me, or just someone to tell me to breathe, there is absolutely no judgement it’s all support! This makes a huge difference in creating a happy confident duo.
I really have the wonder horse 🥰 another milestone achieved 🤩

So me and bean did a thing….
WE RODE! Literally 15 minutes of walk with one small trot and off I got again but we did it. I had been putting it off because of his weight/muscle situation but he was showing me that he was extremely bored of walking in the woods and lunging so I got the saddle out.

I let him tell me what he was comfortable with and if he showed any sign the saddle or me was g wanted on his back I would’ve stopped. However he said, no mum I’ve got this let’s get going!

I am so lucky to have such a special boy who shows me what he’s ready for. Now this doesn’t mean I’m going to start riding every day and really get going under saddle. It just means now the option is there if he or I would like to.. next stop hacking!
