Lets talk compost 💩😍

Horses produce a LOT of manure, so farms have to come up with a proper management plan to be a good neighbor to the community. Manure piles can easily be composted with the right conditions - moisture, air, and food (manure/wood shavings/hay) We use a tractor once a week to turn the three piles we have to add oxygen and increase the internal temperature.

"When done correctly, composting decreases the volume of waste, kills parasitic eggs & larvae, & destroys w**d seeds." (UMass Ag)

How do you know when your compost is 'ready'? When the piles have been allowed to age, the manure turns into a rich soil full of nutrients. And when you look at it, you can no longer tell what the contents of the pile used to be.

"Compost maturity has important implications for plant growth. Mature compost does not compete with plants for nutrients that may already be limiting. If unfinished compost is mixed into the soil, the aerobic microbes may compete with plants for essential nutrients, stunting growth or killing the plants. In addition, immature compost is likely to be relatively high in fatty acids that are toxic to plants." (Texas Agricultural Extension)

Our three piles in the photo below are in different stages of maturity. The oldest pile on the right is 2 years old and ready to use. The middle is still maturing and when you look close, hay and manure is still recognizable. The pile on the left is this year's pile and is still a lot of raw material.

Composting is a great way to manage the large amount of manure horses create and is a wonderful addition to gardens when it is properly aged. 🐎

It has been an absolutely beautiful week of spring weather, perfect for getting out and spending time with the ponies!

One of our pastures was getting some work done to remove some invasive vines, which meant a fun opportunity for boarders to ride horses in a different field :)
