It's cold outside and the blanket debate is in full swing. In my experience, there is no one size fits all blanket program, and you'll need to develop one that works best for you and your horse. However, whatever you choose to do, there are some things you can do to keep your horse warm this winter.
1. Increase feed at night.
Eating increases your horse's metabolism and therefore body temperature. You can increase forage rations at night to warm up your horse from the inside out. In fact, depending on your horse's weight, the outside temperature, and the wind, forage requirements can increase by up to ten pounds per day!
2. Provide a wind shelter
Wind alone can increase a horse's caloric needs and decrease their body temperature. You can block wind from your horse to help reduce the need for warmth.
3. Turnout with other horses
Horses can huddle together to keep warm and block out wind. This can be a very easy option for keeping your horses warm in the winter.

This stuff is pretty amazing! And since we know that upwards of 90% of performance horses have ulcers, this is a great option.

Feeling lucky to have access to grass pasture here in Southern California. Pasture time is not only great for your horse nutritionally, but mentally as well. Having time to graze each day can stimulate your horse’s mind and calm their behavior. If you don’t have a pasture available you can mimic the effects with a slow feeder or pellet ball.

Have you ever thought of feeding your equine friend kelp?

It is high in biotin (for healthy hooves, mane and tail), magnesium (for calming) and methionine (an antioxidant). It’s also high in iodine which is essential for a healthy metabolism, not to mention calcium, iron, and anti inflammatories.

Only 1 oz per day is plenty to give your horse what it needs, and stay away from kelp and any iodine supplements in pregnant mares as they can easily become toxic.
