It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of the much beloved Billy Chunk.

Billy Chunk came to us last November from outside of Winnipeg and had spent his life as an outdoor tom cat. He had a large open wound on his neck. Despite his rough appearance, he was the most loving boy from day one, and completely won us over with his fat cheeks, huge meow, and gentle demeanor.
We spent weeks treating his wounds and helping him heal. After a few months he was able to go for a much-needed dental and we had hoped he would soon find a forever home. Unfortunately he developed an infection and had to be pulled from Petland so he could receive a second dental to remove his remaining teeth. Finally it looked like he was in the clear! Sadly, he developed lumps on his back and shoulder. Heartbreakingly after all he had been through he developed cancer. He was given comfort care until he was ready to cross the rainbow bridge. He died happy, loved and having lived a comfortable life for the last 10 months. We truly wish this wasn’t the end result after everything he has overcome but he was very loved and had the best life we could give him. Fly free baby boy. Heaven just got a little chunkier.

This isn’t an easy post to make but we need help. Due to a number of factors we are drowning in vet bills and have to pay Centennial Animal Hospital a minimum payment of $2100 by the end of the month.

Adoptions are down, the work load is overwhelming, most rescues are feeling the pinch from every angle and donations are down to almost nothing. We’ve been trying to truck through and hoping that things will become easier but so far we’ve had no luck. The months of June and July each had only 2 adoptions per month.

A big part of it is also burn out mostly on my part. As you may have noticed posts have been down and it’s been months since I’ve updated the adopted album. A year ago this month my father became ill and was hospitalized. He died unexpectedly less than 4 months later and I’m just now starting to process everything as we start reaching the one year mark. My father was my person so his loss hit me in ways I couldn’t imagine. And I fully admit I dropped the ball trying to focus on everything, keep my head above water and process my emotions.

What’s One More Community is a very small rescue with only a handful of us who all work in addition to running the rescue and trying to manage our day to day lives.

Our overall vet bill is slowly reaching close to 4 grand and we have a handful of cats in care that still require vetting.

Please understand this post was not made as an excuse but as an explanation for what has been going on behind the scenes. Any donations are appreciated and I thank you in advance for your understanding.

If you wish to donate e-transfers can be sent to….

Or directly to the vet by calling 1-204-269-8162 and saying you’d like to make a donation to What’s One More Community.

Thank you.

One more Billy Chunk post!
Billy is currently in a foster home with other cats, but has to be separate from them because he's not allowed to eat their kibble. He is good with other cats, and wants more attention than his foster is able to give him (honestly he would be happiest with someone patting him and loving him up 24/7/365)!

Would anyone be interested in fostering this giant love bug? He is gentle and affectionate and is quite vocal (he loves to MAAAOOW!). We provide all the supplies, you provide the love! Billy will need regular visits to the vet, but we can help with transport.

If interested, please let us know! Here is a link to our foster application 😻

Mo' Chunk, Mo' Problems 😞
Everyone's favourite chunky Billy has unfortunately been having a tough go lately.

Billy Chunk's stomatitis flared, so with your help we pulled out all the stops and all his teeth too in hopes that would finally settle it. (Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to his vetting!) His mouth has improved, but he's still needing periodic steroid injections to keep the inflammation down.

Last week we noticed that he had new lumps on the back of his neck and on his shoulder, so got him in to the vet. We're waiting on some tests to hopefully tell us whether these are abscesses (possibly a diffuse systemic infection, as he's immunocompromised both from the steroids he needs for his mouth and his FIV), cancer, or something else. He's had an antibiotic injection in the meantime.

Billy is the sweetest boy and our hearts are hurting for him. Please keep him in your thoughts! Donations towards his care can be sent to [email protected] or by phone to Centennial Animal Hospital at 204-269-8162.

The rain may be done for today but it is pouring for Billy Chunk still!

You remember Billy Chunk came to us back in November with multiple open wounds and a severe infection.

He healed up and eventually went for a dental to remove some infected teeth. He was then ready for adoption or so we thought.

Unfortunately, we noticed that Billy Chunk was having trouble eating again, and our vet found severe stomatitis which is causing his mouth to remain infected, bleeding and painful. He is having difficulty eating and losing quality of life; we are running out of options for him. He has been on a variety of antibiotics and pain killers but these are only temporary measures.

We are down to two options for Billy Chunk. He can go for an emergency dental tomorrow to remove his remaining teeth which will cost $1200-$1300 (dental plus medication) or he continues to deteriorate and we make the difficult decision to euthanize this sweet chunky love bug so he doesn’t have to suffer.

He has come a long way and we are hoping we can get enough donations to give him a chance with the dental tomorrow. There is a slight possibility if the dental doesn’t work he will still have to be euthanized but he will have been given every chance we could give him.

To help Billy Chunk please donate!

We are struggling to find homes for the feluk babies. They are super loving, playful and purrfect!

They would make a wonderful addition to any home; the only catch is they can’t be around non-Fe-leuk cats. They are wonderful with children and dogs! These kittens would do great in pairs.

Please share in hopes of finding forever for these sweet babies.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting please message us!

With thanks to the Animal Food Bank Canada, Feed The Furbabies Canada and the Greater Good Charities, we were so happy to receive part of the 37 pallets of food and supplies that was recently donated by Chewy Canada into Manitoba. This donation went to support many rescues and communities across Manitoba and could not have been more timely. So many pet owners are struggling, as are organizations who help them, and rescues and shelters tasked with dealing with the overpopulation of dogs and cats in Manitoba. Without donations like these, so many dogs and cats would go hungry.

A special shout out to the Laing Family Foundation for their incredibly generous donation of $4,600 to cover freight, and to Bruce and his team at Westman Courier for allowing this donation to be delivered and stored at his warehouse free of charge.

It truly takes a village, and this donation has helped over 25 organizations and over 20 communities in Manitoba. We are so incredibly thankful.

BILLY CHUNK IS UP FOR ADOPTION!

Billy Chunk came to us in November from rural Manitoba with a large neck wound. He has been a street cat most of his life and as a result he is FIV-positive, but that doesn’t stop him! He is the sweetest, chunkiest, loveliest boy ever with a big meow!

Billy Chunk does well with other cats. Despite his FIV status he can still live with non-FIV cats. He also seems to do well with kids!

If you are interested in meeting Billy Chunk, he is awaiting his adoring public (and forever family) at Petland Polo Park on St.James. Go show him some love today!

If you are interested in adopting Billy Chunk or have any questions please message us!

Best of luck at finding forever Billy Chunk!

He has a history of being skittish so PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR CHASE! Please message us or call his owner Vivian with any possible sightings!

We have done all the basic tricks to entice him home and we have people canvassing the area in hopes someone has spotted him.

Our gorgeous Merry is still looking for her forever home. This affectionate, chunky, low-key lady will give you so much love! She's not a fan of other cats and would need to be an "only." She's patiently waiting at Petland Regent. We're reducing her adoption fee to $100! Is she the girl for you?

Update: sweet Hali passed away today; she had severe dilated cardiomyopathy and there was too much stress on her tiny body. Fly free, beautiful baby. 😭💔

This isn't how we were hoping to debut our newest teenie baby, but this li'l cutie is Hali (Halifax). She had her first check-up today and was found to have a significant heart murmur.💔

The vet suspects that congenital heart disease is the reason she is not thriving (she is much smaller than her sibs). She's not feeling well, and is getting fluids and syringe feeding until she goes for echocardiogram on Thursday. We're hoping that there will be some medical or surgical therapy available for her 🤞.

The echo will be at least $300 and our vet bill already stands at $3250. We need your help for Hali and all her rescue buddies!

Please donate!
