In a day and age when we have access to an incredible abundance of quality information as well as superior tools and talented trainers, and yet we have more dogs and owners struggling than ever… one should be inclined to ask an obvious question.

Like: “Why?”

The answer isn’t difficult to find.

Regardless of the resources available, if the mindset of those who have this access is one that is crippled by societal programming pushing us all to view weak and enabling behavior as virtuous, sophisticated, and healthy, and eschew accountability and leadership as unkind, unfair, and unsavory—then all the resources in the world will be for naught.

Which is why I’m always talking about mindset first. You’ll never find the resources, nor behave in a fashion that will actually help you and your dog as long as you believe that these “other” resources and this “other” behavior is detrimental or un-good.

For we only find that which we’re willing to see. And at the moment, an enormous portion of society is absolutely unwilling to see, never mind actually embrace, the reality staring back at them from their highly dysfunctional dogs that are the byproduct of their highly dysfunctional relationship, which are the byproduct of their highly dysfunctional mindsets, which are the byproduct of our highly dysfunctional societal programming.

All the resources in the world mean nothing if the minds that could use them have determined them invalid.

It’s easy to blame and critique those in the positive only/force-free world who sell snake oil rather than results.

But no one sells snake oil unless there’s demand for it and plenty of benefits. Benefits like reputational safety, status elevation via false virtue, and of course money.

And so if we’re going to be honest, and take responsibility for our part, we have to acknowledge that the monster eating the training industry—and causing countless dogs to suffer needlessly, be doped up on ineffective psychotropics, and yes, be euthanized (because *shock* training approaches which don’t align with reality aren’t able to help)—then we have to take a hard look at the part we’ve played in creating the demand that those who are either unscrupulous, opportunistic, naive, or indoctrinated—or all of the preceding—are happy to fill… at your’s and your dog’s expense.

Perhaps it’s time we shift our scorn and derision from those providing what’s demanded to those doing the demanding? Zak, Karen, Ian, Victoria, and the rest of the charlatan crew are simply providing what you’ve asked of them.

And the truth is, bullsh*t only survives as long as it receives the support and nurturing and “oxygen” it requires. And the reality is, we all know better. You’re just prioritizing your feelings over your dog’s wellbeing.

You know, choosing the gift of suffering wrapped up in the pretty outer packaging of toxic and superficial empathy and kindness.

Is it the drug dealer (supplier of delusion) or the drug seeker (pursuer of delusion) who’s to blame? Because we all know you don’t get the former without the latter.

So many owners view their dog’s happiness through an extremely superficial lens. They assume that complete freedom, never ending affection, and just “letting a dog be a dog” is what will make their dogs happy.

What they get are anxious, stressed out, chaotic, insecure, overwhelmed scaredy-cats, or disrespectful, pushy, bratty, boundary setting tyrants… and sometimes both all in one.

The irony is that what makes a dog good—structure, rules, accountability—is what also makes a dog happy. Having predictable and consistent rules; having someone to guide you towards the best, most healthy choices and behaviors, and steer you away from the negative and unhealthy; having someone clearly and believably in charge who ensures a chaotic world is kept as ordered as possible—not only makes for a good dog, but also a happy one.

Unfortunately, far too many owners view that which makes a dog good as something oppressive, unpleasant, and even mean. Not to mention unsatisfying for their own selfish desires.

And thus a simple confusion about reality, priorities, and what constitutes a healthy love ensures these owners get neither a good dog nor a happy dog.

PS, of course affection, play, and exercise are also necessary ingredients to the happy/good dog recipe, but you almost certainly don’t need reminders about these.

Good morning, everyone!

Remember Little Bear, the puppy with the heart condition?! He's in a foster home until he's a little older so we can run all the tests again. Yesterday we saw his siblings being sold on Facebook and we were able to secure them. Today we are looking for a foster for their mother. The puppies are old enough to be on their own and momma dog wants nothing to do with them so she needs a separate foster home. If we can't bring mom we will not take the puppies, so finding her a place is urgent. Please share this post.

Momma dog is around 45 pounds. She's good with other dogs, cats and children. She is house, leash and potty trained. She sleeps on the bed with her finder or in a crate. She loves playing with the other dogs and people in the home. Being a Heeler mix she herds the other dogs in the home. It's what they do and they do best with a job. This is an exceptional dog and will do great in a home with some Heeler experience. If you can foster this sweet girl please email us right away.

Everything has its price. Want more soft, doting, affection time with your dog, but don’t want to turn your dog into a mess? Simple, pay the price of being a solid, healthy, selfless, and disciplined leader when needed and when appropriate, and you buy your way into what you desire.

Sadly, like many things in life, most want the fun/enjoyable stuff without paying the price to have it in a healthy fashion. The price of discipline, discomfort, and delayed gratification are simply too high, and so these people’s dogs—like so many other aspects of their lives—take the hit for their inability to discipline themselves.

I personally love having my dogs on the couch and the bed, I also love being able to be super soft and affectionate and doting. But I’m not interested in having my dogs take the hit for my desires, nor am I interested in all of us taking the hit by having less freedom, less enjoyment, and more stress…simply because I want the good stuff but am unwilling to do the hard stuff.

So we have a handful of very clear rules, we are mindful of each of our dog’s individual needs/personality/limits and their personal requirements for structure, and when trespasses occur there are appropriate negative consequences that clearly resonate with each dog. This simple approach allows myself, my wife, my dogs, and all those around us, to enjoy life together to its fullest.

This stuff isn’t complicated, although as of late we’ve worked awfully hard to make it appear so. If you want the good stuff, man-up and woman-up, and pay the price. Otherwise, your dogs will. And, without realizing it, you will most certainly pay as well—just in a different fashion.

As Jocko so simply says: “Discipline equals freedom.” It’s true with dogs, and it’s true with everything else.
