Navy's Story
Navy was the 6th puppy to be born. His arrival into the world was different from the rest. Dixianna actually left the first five puppies in the whelping box, stood at the door of the room, squatted to deliver him, and then walked back to the rest of her puppies. Foster mom quickly cleaned the little guy up and returned him to the box. Dixianna seemed to accept him back just fine and continued delivering the rest of the litter as if nothing odd had happened. All of the puppies were latching on, and by the end of the long day, everyone looked like one big happy family.
Four short hours later, Dixianna had removed Navy from the whelping box. Foster mom returned him to the litter, he began nursing, and everything seemed to be fine again. That is, as long as foster mom was in the room. After being removed from the litter a short while later again, foster mom decided that it would be better if Navy lived in her shirt for a while and started supplementing with puppy formula. So, Navy divided his time between being a litter-mate whenever foster mom was in the room and being safely cuddled inside foster mom's shirt whenever she was not. Supplemental feedings were numerous. But it wasn't enough.
The morning of day 3, Navy was losing weight. And then the reason made itself clear. Navy blew a milk bubble out of his nose, and foster mom immediately discovered the hole in the roof of his mouth. Navy was a cleftie. Consultation with two different veterinarians resulted in the same answers, and it broke foster mom's heart.
BUT! One resourceful volunteer from BRBCR knew that there was still hope. And that hope's name was Adri from Santuary Rescue, who focuses their efforts on cases exactly like Navy's! So that same BRBCR volunteer (Felicity is her name) arranged everything with Sanctuary Rescue and then drove 3 1/2 hours to pick up Navy, and then another 3 hours to deliver Navy to his new foster mom.
Since then, the updates on Navy have been encouraging. He is getting tube fed and is gaining weight. Adri at Sanctuary Rescue says that the hole in his palate is narrow, which gives us all hope that it will be fixable!
