Having fun with your dog plays a huge part in training them! If your dog enjoys spending time with you, it will choose to of its own accord rather than choosing to run away to see other people or dogs for entertainment 🐶 make your training easier and life more fun by playing with your pooch!

Puppy socialisation is NOT just about playing with other dogs.

In fact, too much uncontrolled exposure to other dogs can cause so many unintended consequences.

If you have a puppy, make sure you try to work on ALL aspects of socialisation, as listed in the bottom graphic.

If pulling on the leash gets you to move faster and to where a dog wants to go, they’ll do it. If barking from the crate gets them out, they’ll do it. If jumping on people gets them pets, they’ll do it. If growling moves you away from a prized toy, bone, or space, they’ll do it. If exploding at another dog on a walk “makes the other dog go away”, or simply gives a rewarding adrenaline dump, they’ll do it. If “screaming” at you as you approach makes you stop approaching, they’ll do it. If barking at the window for hours feels good, they’ll do it.

We love to make things overly complicated, but dogs are extremely simple. They do what works to get them what they want.

Your job is to decide what truly works best for you and your dog, and then ensure that’s what occurs. In other words, your job is to be smarter than your dog, and ensure that that which is unwanted, unhealthy, unpleasant, or dangerous, doesn’t work.

It’s not complicated to see how these three interactions would create negative responses. They teach bullies to be more intense bullies, they teach insecure dogs to be more insecure—and proactive in their defense—and so the bullies become more dangerous and reactive, and the insecure become nervous and reactive.

It’s simple stuff. And yet owners engage in these three activities daily, and then wonder why they’re seeing aggression and/or reactivity.
