3 TOP WATER SAFETY TIPS FOR DOGS
Keep your pet safe this summer!
On a hot sunny day, nothing is more inviting to humans or our four-legged friends than a nice cold dip to cool off. As a dog owner myself, I always try and pick shady walks with plenty of water opportunities for my pups to play, drink and swim!
However, there are a few things you should consider to keep your dog safe during the summer season…
1. Can your dog swim?
It seems obvious, but don’t believe the age-old myth that all dogs can swim. If it is the first time your pup will be playing in or near water, be sure to keep a close eye and be prepared to jump in and help them if needs be.
2. Blue-Green Algae
Blue-green algae is a highly toxic growth that can be found in many ponds and lakes across the UK. Most public lakes will have warning signs up, but keep your eyes peeled for a green foam on top of the water.
3. Beach days
If you’re heading to the beach for your doggy holidays or family days out this year, be careful not to let your dog drink too much seawater. Too much salt can be bad on their tummies and will likely give them squirts. Try and get them to have a good glug of freshwater beforehand so they are less tempted.
Be careful near rockpools too, Jelly Fish and sea urchins can give your dog a nasty sting - just like us humans suffer too! Keep an eye on your dog, it is likely they have been stung if they start to vomit, suffer swelling, start frantically licking, or maybe even have difficulty breathing too. Contact a vet if symptoms are severe.
