WELL WORTH THE READ!!
I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.
By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.
There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.
'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.
She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.'
'Oh, you're such a good boy,’ she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive
through downtown?'
'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly..
'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice.’
I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice.. ‘The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.
'What route would you like me to take?' I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.
We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now'.
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.
Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move.
They must have been expecting her.
I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.
'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse.
'Nothing,' I said.
'You have to make a living,' she answered.
'There are other passengers,' I responded.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.
'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.'
I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life..
I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day,I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?
On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.
We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.
But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.
PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID ~BUT~ THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.
At the bottom of this great story was a request to forward this - I deleted that request because if you have read to this point, you won't have to be asked to pass it along you just will...
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance..........

VACATION TIME WITH YOUR DOG

Title: Traveling with Your Dog: The Do's and Don'ts

Introduction
For many pet owners, the idea of embarking on a vacation without their furry friend is simply unthinkable. Traveling with your dog can be an enriching experience that deepens the bond between you and your four-legged companion. However, to ensure a safe, stress-free, and enjoyable trip for both you and your dog, it's crucial to be well-prepared and informed. In this article, we'll explore the do's and don'ts of traveling with your dog to help you make the most of your adventure together.
The Do's

1. Plan Ahead Before hitting the road or boarding a plane, conduct thorough research on pet-friendly accommodations, transportation, and attractions at your destination. Ensure that your chosen lodging is pet-friendly and offers amenities suitable for your dog's needs.

2. Visit the Veterinarian Schedule a visit to the veterinarian to ensure your dog is in good health for travel. Ensure all vaccinations are up-to-date, and request a copy of your dog's medical records to bring along on the trip.

3. Proper Identification Ensure your dog is wearing a collar with an updated identification tag that includes your contact information. Additionally, consider microchipping your pet as a reliable form of identification.

4. Crate Training If traveling by air or long distances, crate train your dog beforehand. A familiar and secure crate can help reduce anxiety and ensure a smoother journey for your pet.

5. Carry Essential Supplies Pack a travel bag for your dog that includes food, treats, a portable water bowl, waste bags, a leash, grooming supplies, and any necessary medications.

6. Exercise Before Traveling Before starting your journey, engage your dog in physical exercise to help them release energy and feel more relaxed during the trip.

7. Practice Short Trips First If your dog is not used to traveling, start with short car rides to get them accustomed to the experience before embarking on a long journey.

The Don'ts
1. Leave Your Dog Unattended Never leave your dog unattended in a parked vehicle, as temperatures inside can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke or suffocation. Even a quick stop for errands can be dangerous for your pet.

2. Ignore Local Regulations Research the local regulations regarding dogs at your destination. Some places may have specific leash laws or restrictions on bringing pets to certain areas.

3. Overfeed During Travel Avoid feeding your dog a large meal just before or during travel, as it may cause motion sickness. Stick to regular feeding schedules and offer small treats as rewards during the journey.

4. Forceful Interaction If your dog shows signs of stress or anxiety during the trip, do not force them into situations that make them uncomfortable. Respect their limits and provide them with a safe space when needed.

5. Forget Health and Hygiene Maintain good hygiene during the trip. Always clean up after your dog, dispose of waste properly, and keep them groomed to avoid discomfort.

6. Neglect Exercise and Breaks Plan regular breaks during your journey to allow your dog to stretch, use the bathroom, and get some fresh air. Exercise can help alleviate restlessness and reduce travel stress.

Conclusion
Traveling with your dog can be a rewarding experience, but it requires careful planning and consideration for your pet's well-being. By following the do's and don'ts outlined in this article, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure for both you and your furry companion. Remember to prioritize your dog's comfort, health, and safety, and you'll create lasting memories together that you'll cherish for years to come. Happy travels!

Title: Caring for Your Dog in Hot Weather: The Do's and Don'ts and Potential Dangers

Introduction: As temperatures rise during the summer months, it's crucial to pay extra attention to your furry friend's well-being. Dogs are susceptible to heat-related illnesses and require special care to stay safe and comfortable in hot weather. This article will guide you through the do's and don'ts of caring for your dog during hot weather and help you understand the potential dangers they may face.

1. Do Provide Ample Shade and Fresh Water: Ensure your dog has access to a shaded area throughout the day, especially during peak sun hours. Set up a well-ventilated, shaded spot in your yard or provide a covered shelter. Additionally, keep multiple bowls of fresh water available, replacing them regularly to prevent dehydration.

2. Don't Leave Your Dog in a Parked Vehicle: Leaving your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes, can be life-threatening. Cars heat up rapidly, and the internal temperature can soar to dangerous levels, even with cracked windows. If you need to run errands, leave your dog at home in a cool environment.

3. Do Schedule Outdoor Activities Wisely: Plan your dog's outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or evenings. Avoid going out during the hottest hours, as pavement and asphalt can become scorching, burning your dog's paws. Opt for grassy areas and consider protective booties if necessary.

4. Don't Overexert Your Dog: During hot weather, strenuous exercise can lead to overheating and heatstroke. Adjust your dog's exercise routine accordingly, keeping it moderate and avoiding intense activities. Pay attention to signs of fatigue or distress, such as excessive panting or lethargy, and provide rest breaks when needed.

5. Do Use Sun Protection: Just like humans, dogs can suffer from sunburn and skin damage. Apply pet-safe sunscreen on areas prone to sunburn, such as the nose, ears, and belly, especially for dogs with light-colored or short fur. Consult your veterinarian for suitable sunscreen products.

6. Don't Walk Your Dog on Hot Surfaces: Asphalt, concrete, and sand can become scorching hot and burn your dog's paw pads. Before heading out for a walk, place your hand on the surface for a few seconds. If it feels too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog. Stick to grassy areas or use protective booties to shield their paws.

7. Do Provide Cooling Measures: Help your dog stay cool by providing them with various cooling options. Place a damp towel or cooling pad for them to lie on. You can also use a kiddie pool or sprinkler for a refreshing playtime. Additionally, frozen treats and ice cubes can offer relief from the heat.

8. Don't Ignore Signs of Heatstroke: Heatstroke is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition. Be vigilant and watch for symptoms like excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, pale gums, or collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool place, offer water, and seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Conclusion: Keeping your dog safe and comfortable in hot weather requires diligence and proactive care. By following the do's and don'ts outlined in this article, you can help prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure your furry friend stays happy and healthy all summer long. Remember, your dog relies on you for their well-being, so prioritize their safety in the heat and enjoy the season together responsibly.

MEET THE GARRY AND LINDA GRIFFITH’S FURBABYS
WH**EY THE WESTIE AND SADIE THE GOLDENDOODLE

We are proud to introduce our Goldendoodle Sadie (8 years) and our West highland terrier Wh**ey (14 years).
Our nickname for Sadie is “goofy doodle”! She is a happy girl who shows her excitement for you coming home by grabbing a shoe or the tv remote and prances around with it. Never biting it but making it a game to get it back.
Thanks to Garry she is also a mooch and will jump on the couch, put her paw on your arm in the sincerest way to ask you for a bite of whatever you’re eating! Such a character! Wh**ey on the other hand is all terrier. In his younger days, he captured more mice than our farm cats! At this time of his life, he is deaf and almost blind, however, his nose leads him anywhere he wants to go! He walks with us several times a week 2 miles at a time. He too is a mooch (thanks Garry) and he knows when there is food about. His nose knows! Now that he is an old guy, he has become bossy and demanding. When he wants to join us on the porch in the morning, he has a specific bark he uses. He uses that same bark when he wants to go to bed (our bed- he’s a bed hog) and if you don’t respond at either time, he will give you a stare that bores into you until you give up and do what he wants!
Both dogs when they are fed, happy and content, go over to their toy basket and fish out their benebones and start chewing, usually simultaneously or pick up their balls and want to go fetch. Even Wh**ey as blind as he is, will bring you his ball to throw and he will find it.
Dogs have been part of our family for over 40 years- we’d be lost without them!
Here are some interesting facts on West Highland Terriers, and Goldendoodles.
The West Highland Terrier, often referred to as the Westie, is a small and energetic dog breed that originated in Scotland. They are known for their distinctive white double coat, which consists of a dense undercoat and a harsh outer coat. The Westie's alert expression, sturdy build, and playful nature make it a popular choice for dog lovers worldwide.
West Highland Terriers are typically friendly, confident, and intelligent companions. They are known for their independent spirit and can sometimes exhibit stubbornness, but with proper training and socialization, they can be obedient and well-behaved. They are generally good with children and make suitable family pets.
Due to their origins as hunting dogs, Westies have a strong prey drive and may chase small animals, so it's important to supervise them around other pets. They are also known for their watchdog abilities, as they are quick to bark and alert their owners of any potential danger.
In terms of exercise, Westies are moderately active and require daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. Their small size and adaptability make them well-suited for various living situations, including apartments, if they receive regular exercise and mental stimulation.
Grooming is an important aspect of caring for a Westie. Their double coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting and occasional hand-stripping to maintain the texture and appearance. Some owners choose to have their Westies professionally groomed.
Overall, the West Highland Terrier is a charming and lively breed that brings joy and companionship to many households. With their playful nature and distinctive appearance, they have become beloved pets for families and individuals alike.
The Golden Doodle, also known as the Goldendoodle, is a popular crossbreed dog that is a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. This hybrid breed has gained significant popularity due to its hypoallergenic coat and friendly temperament.
Golden Doodles come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small to large, depending on the size of the Poodle parent (standard, miniature, or toy). They typically have a wavy or curly coat that can be gold, cream, apricot, or red in color. Their coats are low-shedding and considered hypoallergenic, making them a favorable choice for individuals with allergies.
In terms of temperament, Golden Doodles are often described as friendly, social, and intelligent. They tend to inherit the best traits from both parent breeds. They are known for their affectionate nature, gentle disposition, and desire to please their owners. These qualities make them excellent family pets and therapy dogs.
Golden Doodles are generally adaptable and can thrive in various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive regular exercise and mental stimulation. They are moderately active and enjoy activities such as walks, playtime, and training exercises. Due to their Poodle heritage, they may also excel in activities like agility or obedience training.
As with any dog, early socialization and consistent training are important for Golden Doodles to grow into well-rounded and obedient companions. They generally get along well with children, other pets, and strangers, making them a popular choice for families.
Grooming needs for Golden Doodles vary depending on their coat type. Regular brushing is necessary to prevent matting and keep their coat healthy. Some owners opt for professional grooming every few months to maintain their coat's length and appearance.
In summary, the Golden Doodle is a friendly and intelligent crossbreed that combines the best qualities of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. With their hypoallergenic coats and loving temperament, they have become a popular choice for families seeking an affectionate and low-shedding companion.

Benefits of Slow Feeder Dog Bows

Slow feed dog bowls are a popular feeding solution for pet owners who want to promote healthy eating habits in their dogs. These bowls are designed to slow down the pace at which dogs eat, preventing them from wolfing down their food too quickly, which can lead to digestive problems, choking hazards, and obesity. In this article, we will take a closer look at slow feed dog bowls, their benefits, and how to choose the right one for your dog.

What are slow feed dog bowls?

Slow feed dog bowls are designed with ridges, grooves, or other obstacles that make it harder for dogs to reach and consume their food. By forcing dogs to eat more slowly, these bowls promote healthier digestion and reduce the risk of choking or vomiting. Slow feed dog bowls can also help prevent obesity by reducing the amount of food your dog consumes in a single meal, as well as reducing the risk of bloat (a serious condition that can occur when dogs eat too quickly and swallow too much air).

Benefits of slow feed dog bowls

There are several benefits to using a slow feed dog bowl, including:

Promoting healthy eating habits: Slow feed dog bowls encourage dogs to eat at a more moderate pace, which can help improve digestion and prevent digestive problems.

Reducing the risk of choking: When dogs eat too quickly, they may accidentally inhale their food, which can lead to choking or other respiratory problems. Slow feed dog bowls make it harder for dogs to consume their food too quickly, reducing the risk of choking.

Helping prevent obesity: Dogs that eat too quickly may consume more food than they need, leading to weight gain and obesity. Slow feed dog bowls can help reduce the amount of food your dog eats in a single meal, promoting a healthy weight.

Reducing the risk of bloat: Bloat is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can occur when dogs eat too quickly and swallow too much air. Slow feed dog bowls can help reduce the risk of bloat by encouraging dogs to eat more slowly and avoid swallowing excess air.

Choosing the right slow feed dog bowl

When choosing a slow feed dog bowl, there are several factors to consider, including:

Size and shape: Slow feed dog bowls come in a variety of sizes and shapes, so it's important to choose one that's appropriate for your dog's breed and size. A bowl that's too small may not provide enough food, while a bowl that's too large may be difficult for smaller dogs to use.

Material: Slow feed dog bowls can be made from a variety of materials, including plastic, stainless steel, and ceramic. Each material has its own pros and cons, so it's important to choose one that's safe, durable, and easy to clean.

Design: Slow feed dog bowls come in many different designs, from simple ridged bowls to more complex puzzle-style bowls. Consider your dog's personality and eating habits when choosing a design that will keep them engaged and interested in their food.

Conclusion

Slow feed dog bowls are a great way to promote healthy eating habits in your dog and reduce the risk of digestive problems, choking, and obesity. When choosing a slow feed dog bowl, consider factors such as size, material, and design to ensure that you choose a bowl that's safe, effective, and enjoyable for your furry friend. With the right slow feed dog bowl, you can help your dog eat more slowly and enjoy a healthier, happier life.

Get Lily's Insight to Your Pets Emotions

Once upon a time in a small suburban neighborhood, there lived a young girl named Lily. Lily had always been an animal lover and had a deep connection with her pets. She had a mischievous cat named Whiskers and a playful golden retriever named Max.

One sunny morning, Lily woke up with an idea to understand her pets' moods better. She believed that by understanding their emotions, she could create an even stronger bond with them. Lily decided to embark on a journey of discovery, determined to decipher the language of her beloved companions.

Her first step was to observe her pets closely. She noticed that when Whiskers was content, his tail would be held high, and he would purr softly. His eyes would be relaxed and half-closed, indicating a sense of comfort. On the other hand, when Whiskers was annoyed or upset, his ears would flatten against his head, his tail would lash back and forth, and he would emit short, sharp meows. Lily quickly learned to recognize the various subtleties in Whiskers' body language.

Moving on to Max, Lily noticed that a wagging tail was not always a sign of happiness. A slow and relaxed wag indicated a calm and content mood, while a fast and energetic wag meant excitement. If Max's tail was tucked between his legs, it meant he was scared or anxious. Lily also paid attention to Max's ears, which would perk up when he was alert and drop down when he was sad or tired.

Lily realized that understanding her pets' moods required more than just observing their physical cues. She began to study their daily routines and habits. She noticed that Whiskers loved to curl up in his favorite sunny spot by the window when he was feeling peaceful. Max, on the other hand, loved to play fetch when he was happy and eager to expend his energy.

As Lily delved deeper into her quest, she discovered that spending quality time with her pets was crucial. She played interactive games with them, such as hiding treats and letting them find them. During these activities, she noticed that Whiskers would become more engaged and playful when he was in a good mood, while Max would lose interest if he felt tired or bored.

To enhance her understanding, Lily began to communicate with her pets in a way that transcended words. She used gentle touch and soothing tones to comfort them when they were sad or scared. When Whiskers wanted attention, he would rub against her leg or gently head-butt her hand, while Max would nudge her with his nose or paw at her for playtime.

As time went by, Lily's bond with Whiskers and Max grew stronger than ever. Through her dedication and keen observation, she developed an instinctive understanding of their moods. She could anticipate their needs, provide comfort when necessary, and engage in activities that made them happy.

Word of Lily's remarkable ability spread throughout the neighborhood, and soon, friends and neighbors began seeking her advice on understanding their own pets. Lily happily shared her knowledge and experiences, helping others build better connections with their furry companions.

From that day forward, Lily became known as the "Pet Whisperer" in her community. Her love for animals and her determination to understand their moods had brought joy not only to her own pets but also to the lives of countless others. And so, the girl who set out on a quest to understand her pets' moods left an enduring legacy of compassion, empathy, and harmony between humans and their beloved animal friends.
