Happy rescue stories today!

One of our SBRR families who brought their two girl rats for boarding due to fire evacuation was cleared to return to their home yesterday. They came by today to pick up their babies...and took home two more of our babies! The black and white girl is one of the girls from our last Morongo Valley litter, and the gray hoodie was brought to us in late December after being abandoned in an apartment complex in Hollywood. These girlies are so sweet and this family will spoil them senseless. 😊

Three of our South Central girls went to their and will be loved by a young lady who's been waiting quite a long time for ratties. That wait came to an end when Santa brought her a Double Critter Nation for Christmas. Of course, we were obliged to help fill the cage with new friends. Enjoy the little sweeties!

More good news coming down the pipeline very soon!

Hey , ask and you shall receive. 😉

Ducky 🦆 the 🐀 has entered the chat. Goose had to tell him that he needed to do this for the 'gram.

They enjoyed the rest of the evening munching on snacks.

Checking in. We're good over here in tonight.

This is Goose 🪿. He's here with his brother, Ducky 🦆, for a little while until the fires are contained. He likes ear scratches.

Just giving you some cuteness to break up all those depressing posts involving fires.

Thank you for all of your support! ❤️🐀🏠

A little bit of a because of everything going on.

🥳🐀🐀❤️

A previous adopter picked up a couple young boys from our South Central rescue operation who were medically cleared recently. They are an inquisitive pair and will make a great addition to the family.

Also, thank you for the generous donations from our Amazon wishlist that we received over the holidays. They have already been put to good use.

Eight more rats will start 2025 in new !

Three lovely boys given to us due to an illegal eviction situation from late December go to a family ready to give them tons of attention!

The remaining three boys from the last Morongo Valley hoarding situation will be loved by a new family who's giving boy rats a shot after having girls for a while.

Two girls from the same Morongo Valley surrender will be joining a single young female rat so she won't be alone anymore. We're pretty sure they'll get along quickly.

Who's leaving next? We have a few more adoption appointments lined up this week so we hope to get more rats situated with new owners. Thank you for choosing to .

The holidays are winding down, and we're getting back to work.

So, without further delay...here are the first adoptions of 2025!

A trio of energetic baby boys are filling a once empty cage, making a pair of experienced rat owners very happy.

Two dudes will be joining an existing mischief as new cagemates for a couple older rats who were adopted from us last year.

We are proud to be your official rat suppliers. Let's get more of these fuzzies out the door!

You've probably spent some time handling your ratties over the holidays and might be thinking, "Man, their claws are a bit sharp."

Our first post of 2025 is a friendly reminder that, yes, you can trim your pet rat's nails! It takes a little practice and maybe a friend to help hold your animal, but you can do it!

If you've clipped dog or cat nails before, the procedure is no different. Just watch for the "quick" (a.k.a. the teeny blood vessel that is inside the nail) and you should be able to see it as their nails are semi-transparent. Since their nails are so tiny, you can use standard nail clippers.

Not brave enough to do it yourself? Just bring them to us and we'll do it. Donations appreciated. We'll just ask you to hold them steady while we give them their spa pedicure.

Yes, we're closed for adoptions to the public. However, we had to make an exception for these two special senior lady dumbo rats. This is most likely our final adoption of 2024.

Meet Betty and Grace. They were brought to us last Saturday during our Open House after they were found outside in Irvine huddled against a wall in the cold. Betty (bottom) has several tumors and her sister, Grace (top), has thinning fur. It was obvious that they had once belonged to someone and then dumped outside. We placed them in a comfy space with a warm hammock and fleece to cuddle in while they recuperated from their ordeal.

Their new owner contacted us yesterday because one of their senior rats had passed away, leaving a sweet old lumpy girl by herself. Betty and Grace will get to live the rest of their days with a new cagemate, and they were pretty excited about the prospect. In fact, Betty was bruxing and boggling in her new rat parent's hands while Christine was giving her a long-overdue nail trimming!

We're so glad that their stay was short here. As always, thank you to the adopters who are searching for the more overlooked demographics of rats, such as the seniors and the socially awkward. Every animal deserves a shot at a .

Also, thank you to those who have made generous year-end donations toward surgeries and rescue operations and those who sent us supplies from our Amazon wishlist. Your support for what we do is amazing and we'll continue doing our work!

STORYTIME! 📖🐀

We visited the day after Christmas to get these two dudes evaluated for neutering due to health reasons. In other words, these gentlemen will need to lose their jingle bells this holiday season because they're preventing them from being the jolly ratties that they deserve to be.

Lennox is one of the baby boys who's from our Hawthorne Labor Day rescue, and at only three months old, he's the largest male from that rescued group of over 30 rats. Unfortunately, the hormones are kicking in and he's started to exhibit hostility toward his peers. He is also very standoffish toward people. A neuter at his young age would have an amazing impact on his quality of life and mellow him out, reducing his chances of living the rest of his life in solitude.

Tater is a long-time resident of SBRR, a single male who's been with us for about a year. He had to be separated from his brothers (who have since been adopted out) due to aggression. In addition, he is a cryptorchid rat so he has an undescended testicle. He's quite nervous around other rats but likes being cuddled by people. We want to give him the surgery that we couldn't give him last year since we now have more resources within reach.

We've posted their surgery estimates here, and they're scheduled for surgery next Friday. We're ready to flip the bill and this is going to happen no matter what. But as an organization that solely relies on private donations and the generosity of our supporters, we want to ensure that we can continue providing veterinary care and health-related services for other animals here at .

With that said, we have less than a week left in 2024! So, if you're looking for that one last tax-deductible donation to give, we have a great opportunity for you! Any donations we receive between now and next Friday will go directly toward the neutering procedures for these two gentlemen.

We'll post updates on the two after their procedures. 🐀🥜🚫

It's been a season of animal abandonment and adverse scenarios. But when you're the largest rat rescue in LA County, this is what gets thrown at you.

Aside from the 15 rats we picked up on Friday (they're doing great BTW), we were attending to other emergencies.

On Saturday morning, right before our Open House started, we received a call from a family in Irvine who discovered two domestic rats huddled outside in the cold. They brought them here, and they turned out to be elderly female rats. One of them has a sizable tumor and doesn't get around very well. They are bonded and have been spending the last day snuggling in their hammock. They are very sweet and love ear rubs and scratches. We'll make sure they stay comfortable and warm.

A landlord decided to be a Grinch and ordered all of their tenants to move out by December 31 (yeah this sounds illegal, don't get us started). This forced this pet owner to rehome these three awesome young male rats because they had to move back in with a relative who has limited space. Also, these rats were supposed to be in temporary care with this person and the original owner wouldn't take them back (!) and that's a mess in itself. Regardless, they are all together with us and they'd be a wonderful addition to the right family.

Lastly, this lovely baby girl rat was found wandering outside somewhere near the Hollywood Hills, and the original rescuer handed her to a neighbor who was a previous rat owner. That person wanted to keep her, but due to life situations, that wasn't possible. However, we placed this little lady in with our latest rat mama and her remaining daughters who are about the same age. And you know what? Insta-sisters! (The PEW peeking out on top is Mama, just making sure the coast is clear.)

TL;DR We had cages cleared after adopting out 21 rats last week, and that has been negated and we're back to full cages again. 🤷🏻‍♀️
