Something a little different...

We set up a camera in one of our cages to keep an eye on some newly acquired ratties. This one has a mama and some babies in it. The babies won't be ready for another couple of weeks, but they're hopping around quite a bit.

Like what you see? Maybe we should make this a thing. πŸ€”πŸ€πŸ“Ή

Another returning adopter took home these three lovely boy rats as new companions for their remaining male rat (who was adopted from us quite a bit ago).

This is a special pair. The big dude was a Van Nuys shelter pull who was delivered to us by himself. The two younger boys are from a giant litter of babies we got in late November. Since the big dude was alone, we gave him these two babies to keep him company. It's safe to say they all like each other.

That's a nice way to end the weekend. Also, huge shout-out to .animal.rescue.club for coming out on Saturday to clean the rodent space, wash a bunch of dishes, bottles, and toys, and yes, cuddle rattos.

Presenting the first adoption of 2026! These sisters are headed to a prior adopter to fill a cage. Their previous rats (also adopted from us) retired recently, and it was time for a new mischief to enjoy very spacious digs. We know that they'll be very happy and spoiled.

We are back to processing adoption applications again. If you're interested in adding some rattos to your family, head to our website and complete an adoption inquiry form.

Seasons Greetings, Merry Christmas, Merry Crisis, and all of the happy vibes in between.

Christine's working on Christmas Day (paid holidays don't exist in her world right now), so she asked Santa Siegfried to wish everyone a wonderful couple days of cheer. If you're lucky to have the time off, we hope you enjoy it with the people that you love or do what you love to do...or both!

Also, if you don't have anything to do on 12/26 and want to help us out, we have a storage unit to clear out and transfer to more affordable space, so we could use a few hands. DM us or check out the Discord server for more information.

We look forward to resuming adoptions in 2026.

Also, please tip your Uber drivers. Minimum wage sucks.

SBRR extends its condolences to actress Candy Clark on the passing of her beloved , Squirmin' Herman, at the age of three years. He was just little Herman to many, but his antics turned him into a social media sensation and a favorite among Candy's many fans who follow her online.

Herman graced our presence here at the rescue as a young baby that Candy had nursed back to health. Here's the original story as we had posted it back in December 2022.

Candy, we hope that you find solace in the love of Herman's many admirers. We thank you for bringing awareness of how precious these little lives are and that they're smart creatures who deserve respect.

Storytime! πŸ˜Œβ€οΈπŸ€

This nice lady is Candy Clark. You may recognize her as Debbie from the movie, "American Graffiti." She visited our Lawndale location late last month with a surrender that completely backfired for all the right reasons.

Two months ago, she saved a baby in her house that her cat dragged in. She named him Squirmin' Herman, fed and nursed him back to health, and contacted us after an adoption fell through. She came to drop him off, and was very clear that she was having trouble letting go of him but reluctantly did so.

She called the next day to check on him, and we sent pics and video. She was concerned that he wasn't very responsive to interaction with other people. We weren't surprised because he's a hand-raised wild baby rat in a new environment and we weren't expecting him to do much past hiding, eating, and pooping.

Candy called again the following day and asked if she could take him back because she was way too attached and found it hard for her to let him go. When she returned here, Herman became a completely different and perked up at the sound of her voice. Since she's taken him home, she's given him a much larger cage to play in and he's now living the life as a member of her family. ❀️

Yes, baby roof rats can bond to their caretakers. And that's how they just crawl right into your heart.

We've had several ratties head to their in the past few days ahead of the holiday adoption freeze on 12/18.

- Two baby girls went to a young first-time rat owner. Although this person isn't new to animal care, the rats are a new adventure! We hope you enjoy your new friends.

- Another new rat owner got their first trio of young girls and is making the switch from Syrian hamsters. We hope you like this new type of energy. They'll definitely keep you busy.

- Last, but not least, four dudes have their new rat parent! This group is a hodgepodge of three different origins. Two baby boys are biological brothers from Riverside. One of the babies is from Yorba Linda.

And the oldest dude? He came from the West Valley Animal Shelter along with another rat. To make it even crazier, they were delivered to us here in Lawndale from Chatsworth with Uber's courier service last week. Yes, that's actually a thing.

We're still chugging along here as we head into the winter break. BTW thank you for your patience as Christine is working on getting through emails and logistics while dedicated volunteers help with upkeep. It's been a challenge since she now drives Uber full-time on a 4am-noon shift, five days a week, to keep the lights on and the rescue going. It's grueling work that leaves her exhausted every day. She doesn't wish this on anyone. However, she does ask that you tip your Uber drivers because minimum wage sucks and she doesn't have a choice right now. Here's to hoping that job opportunities that pay a living wage open up in 2026. 🫠

πŸŽ„ HOLIDAY CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENT 🎁

will be shutting down adoptions from 12/17/25-1/1/26 as part of our traditional Winter Break.

We will have adoption appointment slots as our availability allows until 12/16.

The rest of the rescue will remain open during this time, which means cleaning, maintenance, and opportunities to cuddle our animals are available! If you have some free time and would like to help us out or get your tiny fuzzy seratonin therapy on, we'd love to have you. And yes, we are always on call for your questions and dilemmas. πŸ«ΆπŸΌπŸ€

It's that time of year where we get to wind down a little bit and focus on ourselves during this holiday season. We hope that you get an opportunity to do the same.

These lovely six month-old girls went to a returning adopter this weekend whose remaining rat (also adopted from us) needed new friends because she was lonely. These ladies will be spoiled while they spend their first Thanksgiving with a new cagemate.

Their people-friendly temperament and curious personalities made it clear that they weren't going to be with us very long. We just had to find the right matchup.
